BILLIE HOLIDAY Lady Day The 16 Original Commodore Interpretations
If you want to view paradise . . . simply look around and view it!

Rev. Powell

AHD: Not very familiar with Lady Day's work for the Commodore label.  The only thing I know is that she went there to record "Strange Fruit" first, when her regular label (Columbia) thought the song was too controversial.  After it became a hit she re-recorded it several times, and I'm not sure if any of the versions I have are re-releases of the original Commodore version or not.

Bebel Gilberto, "Tanto Tempo"

Inspired me to make my own mix of South American artists including Bebel G., Bola Sete, Vinicius Cantuária, Laurindo Almeida, Rosinha De Valença, Agustín Barrios-Mangoré, Astor Piazzolla, Antara, Heitor Villa-Lobos ("Brazilian Suite"), Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Antonio Lauro ("Venezuelan Waltzes"), Gal Costa, Astrud Gilberto, Luiz Bonfá, and of course Getz/Gilberto.

Pink Floyd, "Atom Heart Mother"

I think the "hit" was the the A side: "Fine And Mellow".  BILLIE HOLIDAY rerecorded many songs, even multiple times.  However, once you've heard the original "Strange Fruit" you'll know it forever.  Here it is:

Thanks... that's not one of the versions I have, though it's mainly the arrangement that differs.  Her vocal performance is almost the same.  Actually, in later renditions when her voice is older, she actually sounds more world weary, which suits the song.  I was blown away the first time I heard the lyrics to that (in a modern Cassandra Wilson cover).  Matching Billie's voice with those words is the perfect match.
