I believe you're thinking of the film "Strange Invaders" (1983).  Paul LeMat plays an entomologist who has a daughter that is part alien, unbeknownst to him.  Turns out his ex-wife (Diana Scarwid) is 100% alien, and a whole group of them have been living in a small mid-West town since the 1950's.  They've been living among us, disguised inside the bodies of the human residents of the town (basically wearing their skins). The "souls" of the humans turn into blue balls of light and float away somewhere.  The aliens about to leave Earth for some reason (can't recall why), so they are all returning to the town, including the ex-wife and the daughter.  LeMat teams with a tabloid journalist (Nancy Allen) to figure out what's going on.  Apparently the aliens generate a lot heat, so there is quite a bit of sweating going on in this film and lots of face peeling!  Not a great film, suffers from low-budget CG fx, bad editing and sound, and poor film quality (extreme haziness throughout the entire film, perhaps intentional), but the aliens and the skin shedding scenes were kind of impressive.  I've seen it probably half a dozen times, so I guess it can't be totally dreadful...on the other hand, I watch a lot of crappy films for no good reason.

I just checked the DVD, and agree.  The description matches, including the entomology lab scene.  The only difference is that it's the adult protagonist's daughter, vice son.
