I'd like to be called in as chief witness for the prosecution.  Lucas is a great idea man I find but completely lacks execution.   He trades in focus on the characters/plot points that are of interest in lieu of providing awful dialog & repulsive comic relief characters.  Whenever he is hands off the director's chair, his stuff seems to shine.  However, the minute he jumps into the actual filmmaking...well...you get what happened with the prequels.

I may be a minority, but I actually like the Star Wars prequels.  I saw the originals when I was young, but the prequels are the ones that made me a fan of the series to begin with.  While I do see and understand the problems people have with the films, I still like them and enjoy them.  Had some of the best action scenes I have ever seen (Darth Maul people is just epic and the battle in the stadium on Genosis really excites me).

Seriously, though, I thought the South Park parody of the rape of Indiana Jones was about as appropo as it could be. If you haven't seen the episode of which I speak, find it now, but be warned, you won't believe what you're seeing.

Darksider's comment was spot on. Great idea man, that George Lucas, but when it comes to execution, yikes. When he was doing the original Star Wars movies, he was young and hungry, so the edge he had at that time is what saved him. Once he lost his edge you ended up with really bad comic relief. In fact, I think you had already begun to see it with Return of the Jedi (Ewoks?) and the dialogue between Luke and Leia. I mean, really, you can see the propensity for movie-killing comic relief even with C3PO, and if George had been making movies then like he is now we'd all be talking about that character like we now do with JarJar.

As for Speilberg, he is not yet on the chopping block, because his overall body of work far exceeds that of George Lucas.

I like the first film, and do generally enjoy the third...  But in every area outside of light saber battles, the original films are superior (better acting, better plots better pacing, and far better characters).  The second film is just blah, often boring and mediocre.  I don't think they're awful though.

The best part of that given episode was the serious tone it set.  When I first watched it, I had thought that one of the kids had been raped.  I was thinking it would have been the episode that finally offended me.  However when I found out it was Indy that was the victim I acknowledged it's brilliance.  I will say in terms of "film rape" no one has done more awful deeds than Lucas.

As for Spielberg, he is not yet on the chopping block, because his overall body of work far exceeds that of George Lucas.

I have a ton of respect of Spielberg because I really think behind the scenes he calls "bullsh!t" on a lot of Lucas's crap.  Watch the behind the scenes footage on the last Indy movie.  He basically calls out Lucas on the stupidity of the alien crap.

Hmm, I thought the first was a travesty, and the 2nd and 3rd were OK.  All of them do have some decent action sequences, though.

The first had one or two good scenes but was pretty forgettable.  The second was an absolute TRIAL to sit through.  The third, I thought, was terrific.  Ewan McGregor's performance was wonderful.  I liked the third about as much as Episode IV.

I like the Star Wars prequels because they are entertaining and I see lots of cool looking aliens. I don't really care about the storyline. The same with Indie 4, it looked cool and was action-packed and entertaining. And I see Kate Blanchett with short black hair speaking in a sexy Russian voice.

I agree with Indy 4. People gripe about the 'nuke the fridge' scene. I don't care how silly it was - Indy walked into a 1950s nuclear test. That was cool.

And I agree that Kate Blanchett was hot in that movie, and I don't usually find her attractive. The black bob, the accent, the whole femme fatale persona suits her.

As for the Star Wars prequels, I think if they stripped out everything put in to sell toys and games, or appeal to this or that demographic, or show off some digital effect or other, then built up the story and the characters and the action, those movies could have been great. As it was, the third prequel was the only one I really enjoyed, despite a few things in it I didn't like. The first was initially exciting just by virtue of being the first Star Wars movie in years, but it doesn't stand up to a second viewing. The second prequel was utterly forgettable and accomplished little in furthering the story.
