I really like Roy Ayres's soundtrack to COFFY, and the soundtrack to David Cronenburg's horror THE BROOD

Anything Pino Donaggio for me. I love his music, especially his Body Double (1984) Soundtrack.

"Tubular Bells" from Exorcist and "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" theme are neck-and-neck for my favorites.  The theme from "Super Fuzz" I like too, as it's chock full of cheesy goodness.

lalo schiffrin's soundtracks to clint eastwoods DEAD POOL and SUDDEN IMPACT are really good, despite their "80s"ness

I'm thinking of soundtracks I listen to often.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY  This youtube for the music only (GYORGY LIGETI's "Atmospheres")  not the visuals:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7xw-0xArcY" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7xw-0xArcY</a>

BARRY LYNDON
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FE1Y8TwhBY" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FE1Y8TwhBY</a>

HANNAH AND HER SISTERS
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZo6xjhGHUk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZo6xjhGHUk</a>

CARNIVAL OF SOULS (music starts 2 minutes in)

That's a good one where the music contributes immensely to the atmosphere of the film.  Not something I think I'd really like listening to outside of the context of the movie, but inside the movie it's absolutely perfect.

Morricone's western soundtracks, especially "The Big Gundown," "The Mercenary," and "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly."

nice point - this is my main 'thing' with film soundtracks. it's all about the context - for e.g. THE BROOD, which I mentioned earlier, it's some of the scariest music Ive ever heard, but I wouldn't actually want to listen to it on the stereo or whatever. same goes for most soundtracks I like. actually the other film I mentioned COFFY is a rare exception - I can bump that. but for most films it's the combination of sound + visuals that does it. I mean can anyone imagine sitting down and listening to the "duh-duh-duh-duh" from JAWS, on its own? - maybe. not me though...

It's certainly creepy music; there are many wonderful delights in the music and on the soundtrack recording (apparently there was no primary source and the sound for the CD is taken from a print of the film).  Plus, there's quite a bit of music not used in final cuts of the film I've seen (the awesome "Carnival Rock" is not in the film - and I don't mean the 1957 movie of that name!)  For me, good music works as long as I'm in the mood for it.  Sometimes I want to Rock, sometimes I want to wax nostalgic, sometimes I feel melancholy, and sometimes I want to mellow out.  I am quite a fan of organ music, so I especially love this soundtrack.
