Rotten Tomatoes recently did a rundown/ranking of all the movies in their database that originated as comic books or graphic novels.  The top rated movie was PERSEPOLIS, and the runner-up was IRON MAN (I expected THE DARK KNIGHT, but that came in #3).

Although you can see the whole list here, I thought you guys would be more interested the ten lowest-ranked movies.  So here they are:

10. THE CROW: CITY OF ANGELS (1996)
9. DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION (2009)
8. THE MOSTLY UNFABULOUS SOCIAL LIFE OF ETHAN GREENE (2006)
7. APPLESEED (2006)
6. WHITEOUT (2009)
5. VIRUS (1998)
4. SUPERGIRL (1984)
3. SON OF THE MASK (2005)
2. STEEL (1997)

and the worst comic book based movie of all time, according to the critics, is

1. YU-GI-OH: THE MOVIE (2004) (I didn't even know this was a comic book first)

I haven't seen any of these movies.  Should I?

I love Supergirl !

Why do some of my faves appear on these lists !  Question

I also enjoyed Son of the Mask.

Steel was rubbish though.

I kind of liked Crow: City of Angels.  It ( and the rest of the follow-up straight to DVD/Sci-Fi channel) movies don't hold a candle to the first Crow movie, but that doesn't mean it was all that bad.  Plus, one of the Power Rangers plays a villianess in the film.  That alone makes it worth seeing once.

HOWEVER..this leads me into another bit of film trivia I recently learned.  In Not Another Teen movie the foregin exchange student who is always walking around in the buff -She was also a Power Ranger from a later series.

lol... I do agree with Supergirl... but I do question most of the movies on the list... YU-GI-OH is a CCG [collectable card game, for those that dont know] I dont see how its counted as a comic book... Son of the Mask seems like a comic book movie but I really think it was a comic book after the effect... THE CROW: CITY OF ANGELS (1996) and Virus (1999?) gee... I would think those were after the effect... [otherwise it would be logical that Phantom Menace would be on this list too]

I'll write my 10 worst list...

Ok my top 10 worst comic book movies...

This list is based upon comic books/characters that were turned into movies and failed.

10. Batman & Robin (1997) [Many may think this movie should be number 1]  This movie fails because Joel Schumacher was attempting to mix Tim Burton's stunning visual world of Batman into a campy Batman TV show of the 1960's, and what becomes a mess that almost nobody can figure out the intent. Actually, it took a diehard Batman fan to explain to me the intent.

9. Barb Wire (1996)... Pamela Anderson cant act or strip... [actually I leaned that woman in the 1990's cannot strip; so why do they try?]

8. Popeye (1980)... Ok, this maybe odd but I often feel a little indifferent about the Popeye. I want to like the movie and its not often actors can pull off the cartoon image without major special effects. The problem I have is the story, its like a chaos mess without even a hint of direction. It's almost like the characters spend too much time in the dressing room without reading the script. Maybe there is a script and then again maybe Robin Williams was just improving... [wow I've almost lost all hope for Robin Williams... but that was before he did Good Morning Vietnam... and most of his movie before GMV are hard to watch]

7. Superman (1978)... Superman is good movie that decides to play God. The reason why its placed on number 7 or even on my top 10 list is because Superman is also a typical comic book movie... where the Director/Script seems to remake the comic book character instead of presenting them as they are actually based, which usually means giving them more power or altering something. Yep, my personal b***h is Superman's ability to *Turn Back Time* talk about Godly powers!

6. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)... The only thing comes to my mind is Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman needed the money.

5. The Return of Swamp Thing (1989)... OMG, Do I really need to explain this one?

4. Supergirl (1984)... The only thing that confuses me is her knowledge of being related to Superman... Actually there is much more then that and I just wonder why, why am I watching this movie.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)... This one anger's me because the movie was written by b***hing mothers that has never seen or read the comic book and didnt like the violence in the first film. WOW, when I was watching the making of the film and the filmmakers explaining why the change... my mouth hit the floor.

2. Ri¢hie Ri¢h (1994)... What maybe an interesting idea seems to be made to cash in the the Home Alone Success. Many early 1990's kid movies seemed to follow this direction.

1. The Punisher (2004)... wow its sad that the Dolph Lundgren 1989 version is has more action, more violence and even more true to the comic book character then the 2004 movie, and his movie should of been called Louis Gossett Jr. meets the Punisher.

Movies not picked...

Catwoman (2004)... I dont think it's as bad as many say.

Masters of the Universe (1987)... Is bad but not by intent and becomes fun to watch

Howard the Duck (1986)... It's almost like the comic book, also the romance between the human and a duck is a classic!

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987)... is a movie based on the inside joke of Cabbage Patch Kids and they were stickers... what do you expect?

As a bad movie fan, I think the two best films on that list are Virus and Supergirl.  Both are enjoyable in their way.

Not sure why APPLESEED shouldn't count because it's based on a manga... how is a manga different from a comic book or graphic novel?  They explicitly say manga's count in the intro.

I assume Yu-gi-oh must have been a manga before it was a card game.  Who knew?  Still, I agree that one probably shouldn't count, because the game took on a life of its own and the movie was clearly inspired by the game.

If you take out YU-GI-OH the next lowest rated on the list would be GARFIELD: A TAIL OF TWO KITTIES.

SUPERMAN IV, CATWOMAN and BATMAN & ROBIN just missed the bottom 10, they were all bottom 20.

What's funny about Yu-Gi-Oh is the manga is, ah, a little different.  I found this out after seeing one bit in it where Yugi (the lead character) causes a guy to be doused in whiskey and then he lights him on fire.  Yugi also causes several characters to go permanently insane.

Yeah.  They changed it in the anime some.
