I'm not huge on musicals, but I do respect them for that they are and do enjoy one once in a while. Tracy mentioned some I like, particularly the classics like The King and I, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Sound of Music. Oklahoma is a true classic that can't be denied. The Music Man is a good one too as far as the classics go. Bye Bye Birdie and West Side Story are tremendous for the 60's musicals. I also really love Little Shop of Horrors, to include the 1986 film adaptation.

The Music Man....shame on me for forgetting that! I adore Robert Preston...he was wonderful in Victor/Victoria as well.

I can't stand modern musicals. I had to watch Sweeny Todd with subtitles and without audio.

That said, I do like Grease (1978) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show of course Thumbup

I love both of those films as well, but no, they are not musicals. A musical has to have musical numbers, and those musical numbers are a story-telling component, and convey actual feelings and dialogue of the characters. Musicals developed out of Opera, but with one primary difference. In opera, all dialogue is delivered as part of the musical score, while with musicals, it is interspersed with periods of spoken dialogue without music.

I don't watch many musicals, but Rocky Horror is OK by me, and as a matter of fact my wife rented the film version of "Dream Girls" (w/Eddie Murphy, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, et. al.) a while ago and I think I enjoyed that movie more than she did.

Also liked the film version of "Chicago," mainly for the extensive eye candy. I mean, geez, even Renee Zellweger looked hot in that flick.

.The WIZARD OF OZ,of course.

Singin' in the Rain - the only musical I've been able to throughly  enjoy as an adult and loved every second of it

Pink Floyd The Wall is an interesting one. It started out as a conceptual album on a very grand scale, and became a film that is difficult to classify. Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar, for example, are straight up rock operas. The Wall, however, is not truly a rock opera in the strict sense, because it doesn't involve the characters singing to each other, nor is it really a "musical," because musicals are dialogue supported by musical numbers. The Wall has very little dialogue. Ultimately I kind of put it in it's own category.
