I AM serious, and stop calling me Shirley

FLAWLESS is a 2007 crime drama / heist film starring Demi  Moore and Michael Caine.

Michael Caine.  That's enough to recommend it.

What it has: Very solid acting (including a good turn by Joss Ackland), an INTERESTING story, creative direction and some good music. And yet, the dweeb "critics" that Rotten Tomatoes aggregates gives this film 55%?  Pure pretentious goat mucous.  This is why I can't stand many who call themselves "critics."

What were some of the objections?  Well, the pace was too slow for a "heist film" and truthfully, I think the subtleties of the story were over their heads.

FLAWLESS concerns itself with some BIG issues and it uses the diamond cartel to tell its story. This film is about corporate greed, government corruption and the kind of evil that results when an individual is greedy and corrupt enough.  But all that stuff is in the background, serving to hold up the "heist" plot.

What FLAWLESS isn't is George Clooney or Mark Walberg (or Michael Caine, for that matter!) having the perfect timing, high tech gadgetry and enough time and money to "foresee and solve every problem to the minutest detail" to pull off an "impossible" heist.  No, this film is about a work-a-day man, a scorned woman and that man's very specific journey.  It's hard to describe further without giving spoilers.

If you want a "heist film" that provokes deeper thought and provides some historical insight into the formation and proliferation of the world diamond cartel rather than merely "looks good and has a fast, hip pace," Give FLAWLESS a look.

4 out of 5.  Well done period piece.

(Edit: fixed a typo)

Professor Hathaway:  I noticed you stopped stuttering.
Bodie:      I've been giving myself shock treatments.
Professor Hathaway: Up the voltage.
