This one should be easy... I remember watching this in school (mid to later eighties) several times.  I THINK it was a PBS (or similar educational channel) TV series, it's about this group of a teens of various ages who are on a sailboat learning various things (I guess they're part of a summer school project or something.)  One of the kids is the grandson of the boat's captain.  On of the more memorable episodes I remember is the ship gets crashed and they're stuck on a deserted island for several days.  Among other things, the boy makes a circle of stones, one for each day they're on the island, and uses a homemade snare to catch a rabbit.  When he later pulls the skinned rabbit out of his backpack one of the girls gets a bit upset about this, saying she could never kill an animal.  And he points out that she eats meat from the store and replies something like, "Someone has to."

I remember in the final episode (mild spoilers) they make it back home and the Captain asks the boy what he wants to be when he grows up.  He says, "I don't know, I kind of want to be a sailor, but I also want to be a scientist."  And the Captain replies, "Why not both?"

I was going to say The Lost Islands (the Australian TV series) but I don't think it is that.

Wasn't sure but I loaded up an ep on Youtube and when I heard that theme song, "Yeah, that's it!"
