Title: Recommended creature features/animal attack films?
Post by: Kaseykockroach on March 02, 2011, 06:46:14 PM
I must confess, out of all the many, many, MANY B-movies out there, the genre that's always 'fascinated' me the most is anything with a giant killer animal on a rampage (or, in the case of The Rats or Piranha, regular-sized animals on a rampage). Maybe I'm just an animal lover who enjoys seeing them take their revenge on us stupid humans? Or maybe we're just sick, horrible people who enjoy watching murder and mayhem? Hopefully, it's just the former. Who knows, but out of my B-movie collection, I end pulling out the giant alligator/shark/snake/whatever-type films the most.
Who's with me? >D And what do you folks think are the best/worst ones?

If you wanna see Leslie Nielsen as a racist bear-wrestler, check out Day Of The Animals.

Squirm (1976) is pretty cheeseball but has a couple cool moments.

Frogs (1972) is likewise as the above with a young Sam Elliot.

A number of killer bee movies come out in the mid-to-late seventies: The Swarm, The Savage Bees among others.

Cujo (1983) wasn't bad.

I can think of others, I'm sure.

Already have all of those except Cujo and the killer bee flicks (though I've got the Mst3k episode THE DEADLY BEES). How bad/good's that one?

* GRIZZLY is pretty bad
* DAY OF THE ANIMALS is also pretty bad

I bought both of them.

FOOD OF THE GODS (1976), one of the last films by Bert I. Gordon (his initials spelled 'BIG'!) features all sorts of rampant giant animals including giant wasps, giant worms, giant chickens, and giant mousies. They all got big because Ida Lupino finds some goo bubbling up on her farm and feeds it to the chickens.

Also features ex-child Evangelist Marjoe Gortner, Ralph Meeker, Pamela Franklin (who has a moving speech about how hard it is to be a "Lady Bacteriologist" and find a good man), and some really funny BIG effects.

Gordon also made THE CYCLOPS (1955), THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN (1957), WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST (1958), EARTH VS THE GIANT SPIDER (1959), VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS (1965), and best of all, THE EMPIRE OF THE ANTS (1977) - which is also hilarious.

If ya don't mind supernatural elements, Devil Dog: Hound of Hell has an evil doberman...I kind of like it...

Which one; The Deadly Bees?  Pretty dumb.  Haven't seen the non-mst3k one.
Cujo is decent; I'd recommend it.

The Curse of the Komodo - one of my favorites.  Giant Komodo dragons run amok on a tropical island, terrorizing some researchers and a band of criminals.   I really enjoyed this, lots of cheesy CGI, guys standing around firing infinite ammo at Komodos who seem to be ignoring them, plenty of stock footage from other movies.

Spiders - a hot babe and her goofy cohorts do battle with giant spiders.  Good fun.

Frankenfish - giant killer fish are after some people in the Louisiana swamps.

Anaconda 3 - David Hasselhoff and some hot babe do battle with the Anacondas  :teddyr:

Alligator (1980) is a great one!  There is cheesy acting, fake animatronics, unbelievable dialogue, and a side boob! :teddyr:

Them! (1954).  It's a giant ants film.  It sorta verges on being a giant monster movie (Godzilla, etc), but I would still consider it an animal attack film.

How about man eating sheep?
"Get ready for the violence of the lambs."  :bouncegiggle:

Believe it or not...not the first killer sheep movie-the GODMONSTER of INDIAN FLATS was made in the 70's! (the same era that gave us giant rabbits and killer worms!)
And one of the most ridiculous monsters EVER! Rivals the turkey monster from BLOODFREAK for sheer stupidity!

In my mind, the greatest creature feature is "Shark Attack 3: Megalodon".

Giant shark that eats boats - Check
Some of the worst lines in cinema history - Check
Bad guy jetski-ing into the mouth of said shark - Check
John Barrowman playing the alpha male - Priceless

Yeah.  I thought it was pretty good when I saw it back in the 1980s.  I haven't seen it since then.  I wonder if it stands the test of time?

In my opinion one of the main problems with Hollywood today is that there aren't enough giant animal/monster movies.

Tarantulas: Deadly Cargo
8 Legged Freaks
Arachnaphobia
Anaconda
Attack of the Giant Leeches
Tentacles
Earth vs the Spider
And here's a trailer for one of my favorites:

I couldn't find a trailer for it, but does anyone remember the old 1950's Clint Walker movie  Night Of The Grizzly? That was a nice little Western about a big old teddy bear named Old Satan that terrorized the countryside, with Mr. Walker to the rescue.

I used to watch that quite often remember the skunk scene and though I enjoyed it remember the beginning being a bit slow but when it got going a very good film.

Rattlers, Valley of the Gwangi, Orca: the Killer Whale, Man's Best Friend, Coons: Night of the Bandits of the Night (I think released by Troma but my brother won't let me forget it), and can't think of any off the top of my head.

Snakes on a Plane is a regular viewing at my house!

One that hasn't been mentioned which is really cool is Ticks from 1993 with Seth Green http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108339/

You could check out a really cool made-for-tv movie from Germany in 2008 called Killer Bees. I love it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1230113/

Also, Tremors is a classic of this genre.

Chaw and Pig Hunt are basically remakes of it so if you saw those and liked any than check it out. I like it but I'm Australian so I'm biased, but it has really nice shots of the Australian outback on display.

RATTLERS (1976)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3YQwyH0E2A

The snakes in the bathtub bit brought this one some notoriety, but its all pretty tame PG nonsense. At one point a rattlesnake launches itself at a speeding Army jeep and punctures the tire! And any movie that kicks off with two obnoxious kids getting bitten to death by a swarm of rattlesnakes can't be all bad, though.

Arachnophobia is pretty good.

Maybe Savage Harvest with Tom Skerritt.
