Title: Other places you would like to visit
Post by: asimpson2006 on March 25, 2009, 06:55:13 AM
Overall I've been thinking a lot lately about places I would like to visit in my life time before my life comes to end.  What are some places that everyone would like to visit.  This doesn't have to include other countries.  Here is my list of places I would like to visit (Not a complete list since there is a lot of places that I would like to visit):

Long Beach CA: Since I've always been into formula style racing I would really like to go visit Long Beach when the Long Beach Grand prix happens or just visit it other wise.

Las Vegas NV:  My parents went there a few years ago, and my uncle has been there several times.  My dad told me I would really like it out there more than I would like Dallas TX, which I want to visit as well.

Jamaica:  My mom and dad have been there twice and now I really want to go there myself.  Sadly I don't have 3,000 sitting around to go there.

South Korea:  Since I used to study Korean martial arts for a few years, I have had an interest in going there to visit.

Australia - It's just a really unique place. Beautiful landscapes, unusual animals, some interesting city sights, and lots of beer and barbecues.

Scotland - My ancestors came from there, so the place has always held some fascination for me. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing all of Great Britain, having grown up watching a lot of British movies and TV shows. Ireland too, for that matter.

Egypt - I'm fascinated by really large structures, and really ancient things, so this is a natural.

Dubai - Home of many modern-day engineering marvels.

Cape Canavarel, Florida - Pretty self-explanatory.

Baikonur, Khazakhstan - Same reason as Cape Canavarel

The Trinity site, New Mexico - Another area of science/history I can't get enough of.

I've always been fascinated by Russia, probably because the place was so closed off and mysterious behind the Iron Curtain.  I'd like to visit Moscow and maybe even Siberia, Lake Baikal, etc.

Always wanted to go to the UK - London, rural England, and especially Scotland and Ireland.  I'm an avid golfer, so I'd really like to play at St. Andrews, though any links style course would be very cool.

Would like to take a tour of South America.  Hit all the major sights.  I've always found the culture and stuff rather interesting.  Machu Picchu would be awesome.

I've got an odd fascination with the country of Estonia.  I read a book about Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania and it was quite interesting.  Might as well hit Norway while I'm there.

London, England - Always wanted to see the sights there like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, you know the tourist stuff

Ireland - Some of my family roots are from here

Scotland -  More family roots from here

Moscow, Russia - One reason, onion domes

Tokyo, Japan - It just seems interesting to me

the Pyramids of Giza - Ancient Wonder of the World is why

South Africa - Want to see how huge Trevor's underpants collection is.  :teddyr: Seriously, know a woman from there who makes it sound lovely enough to visit

Luxembourg - Think it's cause it's the smallest country in Europe (I believe the world but can't remember) has it's appeal to me

Mars - Sure we can't go to it now but would like to think that we will be able to one day visit it in my lifetime (however I doubt that will happen but remain hopeful)

Wherever else I go in life, I hope it's as a traveler, not a tourist. Short list: Back to Britain for a third time, especially Scotland, barging in France, a visit to Australia, a trip to Chile and Argentina, some time in Cuba (which I almost visited in 2001, believe it or not) a long in depth visit to Russia. I'm becoming convinced trains might just be the best and most "real" way to travel.

I've been to a lot of places, but here are a few countries that I've never been to that I'd like to see before I die.

Central & South America: Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina
Europe: Ukraine
Far East: Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand
Oceania: New Zealand & Australia

I wouldn't turn down a trip to Hawaii if someone offered, but I've never had a hankering to go.  Antarctica, either.

There are a number of places that are officially sovreign states in Europe that are smaller than Luxembourg.  Lichenstein, San Marino, Monaco, and the smallest of all, Vatican City--basically it's St. Peter's square, and you can walk from end to end in 5 minutes.  They won't stamp your passport (I don't think), though.

About Australia...
Yes, I've been there and yes, it is everything you have imagined it would be and more!
Dean is lucky to live there.  Heck, I'd move there if I had mega-bucks.

As for a place here in the U.S, I recommend the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Sure, there's Mt. Rushmore, but it's just part of the whole experience.
The Black Hills and all the old towns within it are some of the coolest towns I've ever been to.  The saloons, sights, sounds, the American Indian traditions and Wild West feel can't be replicated quite like they are in the Black Hills.  Especially Deadwood.  Awesome town!
I've seriously considered retiring somewhere in the Black Hills when I get to be an old man.

Oceania: New Zealand & Australia

After watching Lost, I don't want to fly on any airline going that direction or coming from that direction. Next thing you know, BAM, you're on an island with a smoke monster after you.  :teddyr:

As you can see geography was not my strong subject in school. :bouncegiggle: Who am I kidding, I went to school in Alabama. Some days I'm surprised I know as much as I do seeing as most of the text books we had were at least 20 + years old.

I used to want to go to New Zealand, but after the Lord of the Rings thing, no thanks.  Plus, as Lewis Black says: "If you're gonna fly for 19 hours on a plane, they better have the common courtesy to speak another language."

But right now, the main places I want to visit are Italy (Rome, especially, but any spot), and London.  A girl I know went there last year and wouldn't shut up about how great London is.  In my ignorance, I'm like, "Philly is just as great, so whatever."  But I do wanna go.

FRANCE - To see the great Gothic Cathedrals, the most beautiful buildings ever built, and to walk the lines of the old trenches that once formed the Western Front.

ENGLAND - To see the Imperial War Museum, the Tower, and of course, 221B Baker Street!

ITALY - Best food and friendliest people in Europe, built on top of the remains of the Renaissance, which was built on the ruins of the Roman Empire!

This little history geek would die a happy man if  he could take all these in, at least once!

Japan...mainly for the high tech culture fused with old traditions.  Also to try the whacked out food.

I read a short piece about walking around luxumbourg.  It sounded neat...walk from hotel to hotel.

Sometimes quite literally. I've seen walls where the bottom was Roman and the top was 19th century, with all the history in between.

I'd like to see more of Spain, Germany, and Switzerland, countries I've been fortunate enough to visit very briefly but not see much of. Well, actually I'd like to see a lot more of Europe in general. Would love to travel around Mexico, but only after I make considerable improvement in my Spanish skills. Hope to see Antarctica some day. Would like to see Finland, and I'd especially love to see the northern lights in Lapland. I've actually got a standing offer to do that last because my brother's wife is Finnish, but there never seems to be the time or money.

Well it's a funny ol' accent.  It's kind of like how Canadians are to Americans, the Kiwi [New Zealand] accent is like that to the Australians.

The common cliche phrase is fish and chips.  New Zealand-ized it becomes Fush and Chups.  The number six sounds like sex to the immature []

So it's almost like another language!

[It's a pretty cool place incidentally and easier to get around than my country which is too damned big sometimes.]

The top two places off the top of my head I'd like to visit but haven't yet:

Japan [the girlfriend and I have been wanting to go for a while now]

America

Though to be fair I'd like to go everywhere eventually.  Europe sounds cool though not the highest on my list, and I'd like to do more South America.  Antarctica is probably somewhere I'd go as a [hopefully] rich retiree.  I've even considered doing a short tour of North Korea [since that'd be so messed up to be very interesting]

The exchange rate is currently in your favour with one Australian dollar getting .70 US cents.     Eight months ago we were getting about .95c.

Just so you know.

:bouncegiggle: :teddyr: Karma right there, meQal. South Africa is a lovely place and it is truly a world in one country.  My underpants stock is the reason my place of work is moving: can't fit in anymore undies and can't take the stench anymore.  :buggedout:

Me? I would like to go anywhere in the world as I've only ever been to Italy in 2003 on business. I'd love to visit the USA and Canada, the UK and Australia too and also Russia.

But I cannot go to Russia, because Russia comes to you.  :teddyr:

LOTRs is one of the reasons I want to go.  I'd love to see that scenery in 3-D.

I'm fairly certain it's a beautiful place.  My main concern is, I'm also fairly certain that there's a big population of LOTR nerds (no offense), going there.  Last thing I wanna do is spend a vacation hearing them talk about how "This is the spot that Frodo got the ring back from that other guy" or whatever.

Well that's actually why when I've managed to get to Europe, I haven't spent any time in England except a couple of days 8 years ago. If I'm spending all that money to get there, I want to hear a different language.

Still, I may get to Ireland pretty soon. I was looking for the cheapest way to get to Europe and I found out that by far the cheapest way to cross the Atlantic seems to be to go with the Irish. Aer Lingus fares New York to Dublin are under $600 round trip. About half what I was seeing for other options. There's actually a lot I'd like to see around England, Ireland and Scotland.

Plus like you say the accents are wonderful to listen to. On my brief stay in England I did hit a pub, and I sat a table with some locals who were from IIRC Yorkshire, Manchester (they claimed he'd played for Manchester United) and London. That was very nice. I could have listened to that all night.
