This plague has been moving trough this website's veins for too long! I, Arm Commander, will D-Gun this horrible eexcuse for an adventure movie out of BadMovies.org's system like an aspirin, the same way I got rid of all skull-rated movies, the same way I finish the job with them!
Oh boy, do I remember this one. This came out just as X rated films were getting critical recognition. Midnight Cowboy was that milestone. That was a great film. Tame by today's standards. You see more on a daytime Soap these days. But CANDY? Kinky, strange, outright bizzare. I've caught it late at night on oddball stations and even on cable they only seem to have the butchered version. The original theater version was hard enough to follow and the TV version is worse. I read the book. It was hard to follow but then again when does porn have any real plot? Terry Southern wrote The Magic Christian also. I love that book and the film. Ringo's in it too. Big stars came out of the woodwork to make at least one X rated movie. I have no idea why this stinker snagged so many A list actors and personalities. It's a fun romp to watch today just to see all these people-(most are dead now)-and try to figure out why they showed up. By the way, I love the way she says "Daddy!" at the end...KINKY!
Sounds like they were attempting to film "Candide," no? The incoherence and vulgarity is in the spirit of the book, so maybe they should get some windage here: they were wide of the mark but never seriously out of range.
I saw this stuff, unbelivable, i just really remember the girls inside and the WTF ending, and i don't understand a damn thing.
It's good for a beer pizza buddy evening, no more.
As I was reading this I had a tough time imagining that this film actualy exists. You've done a real public service watching it so that we never have to :)
I refuse to believe this thing exists. Of course, refusing to believe it exists, wit my luck, it does...
The poor screenwriter was simply being faithful to the Terry Southern/Mason Hoffenburg novel--and just what problems THEY were trying to work out--I don't want to know about. There are some very mechanical attacks on The Establishment (The Army, Doctors, Universities, The Family), but they lack any real conviction, and seem to se some sort of set dressing for the kinky stuff, which is the real center of interest. Within a few years, Southern ran his particular brand of grotesque comedy into the ground and disappeared back into the ether. Fortunately.
You guys are crazy. I thought this movie was hilarious. Richard Burton and Ringo Starr especially.
OH MY GOD!!!
I remember when the buggar came out. Great reviews, "marvelous satire", Burton's hair in the breeze, blonde gal illustrating her "independence and new-found freedom". If you didn't like it, it was because "you didn't get it". The times were somewhat insane, and this film went right along.
BTW, a young woman gave me the book to read so I could bring it back to her (the subtlety of women- how was I to know that when a girl gives you a sex book so you could "bring it back" means she was interested in you?)so I read it, took it back, chatted a bit and left. Something about her being engaged to a fella serving in 'Nam kept me away. Crazy.
The original source novel also inspired two hardcore movies, THE EROTIC ADVENTURES OF CANDY and PRETTY PEACHES. I'm not sure Terry Southern got any onscreen credit, though, poor guy.
Every day I will thank God that I never saw this movie....
Sometimes softcore porno can be amusing, (Original flesh Gordon) but this was torture, unfortunately I'm 19 (and unable to drink legally) so, I was watching sober, *shudder* for those of you who watched this abomination drunk, trust me... Its worse without alcohol.
I have seen many bad movies in my life, and many of them I have enjoyed. This one, though, is absolutely the worst piece of s*** I have ever seen in my life. I could barely watch it, and I have seen it all the way through perhaps once or twice. The only watchable part is the last sequence where Candy walks through the Italian field, and we see the cast and crew having a party or something. Richard Burton gave perhaps the most embarrassing performance in motion picture history in this film.
This is a rock-bottom bad film. I don't blame Ewa Aulin, a rotten actress, for getting out of the business altogether and embark on a different career (reportedly teaching).

Please don't knock Ewa, star of such films as DEATH LAID AN EGG, MICROSCOPIC LIQUID SUBWAY TO OBLIVION, and DEATH SMILED AT MURDER. She may not have been a great actress, but she knew how to pick projects with great titles.
Hmm. Well I made it through Caligula (no review?!) and I'm up for a greater challenge.
This film was and still is ahead of its time. Maybe a thousand years; maybe 10,000 years. We will never appreciate it in our miserable lifetimes. :hot:
I saw this when it was first releaseed in theaters...dont really remember it being X-rated though..whatever for??? no GRAPHIC sex....mostly all implied.... but I laughed my a$$ off at it back then...have a VHS copy that I occasionally watch just for old times sake...anyway, I liked the bizarre atmosphere and sarcasm that seemed to prevail throughout the *cough* storyline...glad to see it earned a review here...good job...
Despised this movie. Reviled it. A movie has to go an extra mile to make me feel that way. It has to be hateful or mean-spirited or just plain prurient in a way that makes my skin crawl. I'm far from a prude, but this movie was sickening.
