Title: Weird Board Games
Post by: Ash on July 31, 2009, 04:49:37 AM
Ever come across any strange or offbeat board games?
I found this one earlier:

(http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/1395/waronterrora638017.jpg) (http://img361.imageshack.us/i/waronterrora638017.jpg/)

Apparently it's a real game and plays similar to Risk.  It even comes with an "Evil balaclava" for one of the players to wear.

Or how about this one:

How about you?
Know of any other offbeat or weird board games?

I think the heyday of weird board games was the late '70s and early '80s. Mass media was looking for fun ways to expand their demographic, but video games were still in their nescient phase.

Everything had a board game in the '80s. I recall owning a Star Wars board game and a Q-Bert board game, both of which I did not have the instructions to. I still have no idea how those games were played. I did have a rather good board game based on the movie Willow which I played quite a lot of.

I have played a lot of board games in my time. Hotels, was a classic. And who didn't wish for that copy of Mousetrap? No matter that it ended up being two hours of set up for fifteen minutes of fun? And Dark Tower! What a cruel, capricious game.

It's not all bad, though. In recent years, board games have experienced quite a renaissance. There are many "designer board games" that are very interesting to play.

There is a game called Arkham Horror which is incredibly fun to play, if you like H.P. Lovecraft. It takes about an hour to set-up, and four or five hours to play. But if you have friends that are geeky enough to sit down and play it with you, it is a hell of a lot of fun.

I do not have a lot of friends who are geeky enough to play it with me, so it usually ends up being just me and my brother. It's a really cool game, though!

I really like the designer board game trend. I would really like to play the designer board gamed based on George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire.

I just bought that about two weeks ago! It really is fun, but I don't have any geeky friends either. :bluesad:

I had that one, I loved it.

One of my favorites was the MAD magazine board game. It was a riot, and the point was to LOOSE all your money. Great fun.

I bought this one game called Hidden Conflict at an anime convention a few years back.  And for the life of me, me and my friends can not figure out how to play it.  We've read the instructions several times and we can't figure it out.

My dad gave my sister and me this board game which was sort of a rip off of Monopoly and Life combined. I can't remember what it was called but it was all about credit unions. I am sure that is where he got the game as some lame promotion one was having.

Ash, I own this game.  It's sort of like RISK, but with a humorous (if that's possible) terrorism twist to it.  I suddenly got addicted to board gaming a few months ago and have purchased about 100 games since November 2008 or so.  A GREAT source for board game info is www.boardgamegeek.com

Some other good ones I own (that you can find on Board Game Geek) are:

* STONE AGE
* SMALL WORLD
* SHOGUN
* DUST
* DESCENT: JOURNEYS IN THE DARK
* ARKHAM HORROR
* CAYLUS
* RACE FOR THE GALAXY
* AGRICOLA
* SAINT PETERSBURG
* LE HAVRE
* CARCASSONNE
* OREGON
* STARCRAFT (just like the PC game)
* DOMAINE

Wow . . . too many to name . . . but each one has an interesting theme and some might even be called "weird!"

Almost forgot this one:

1960:  THE MAKING OF THE PRESIDENT - One player is Nixon, the other is Kennedy and you campaign against each other to control the most electoral votes.  The game is driven by cards representing actual events that did or could have affected the campaign (such as Kennedy's Catholicism, Nixon's five o'clock shadow, and racial issues).  You try to play the cards to your best advantage to sway voters or influence the media.  There's also a debate where you could win (or lose) important votes.  This is an excellent game for 2 people, and also somewhat educational.

Stock Ticker. I used to have this when I was a kid. All you do is buy and sell six commodities, with price fluctuations determined by rolling three dice. Shares start at a buck and split if they reach two bucks. Pretty clever, but also kind of a weird way to have hours of fun. Looks like it was dirt-cheap to manufacture, doesn't it?

Yeah, but you could probably sell it on eBay for about $100 because it's out of print now!

Snits revenge!  I don't think I ever played by the rules but the instructions, concept, and game pieces were awesome!

Here is a picture of my brother and his friend as we play a game of Arkham Horror. The game took about 45 minutes to set up and 3 hours to play. Great times!

(Yes, we did manage to vanquish Ithaqua. Thank you, holy shotgun.)

Last night was the first time we talked somebody else into playing it. It's usually just my brother and me playing two characters apiece.

We're using the Dunwich Horror, a present I bought my brother for his recent birthday.

We had a creepy but cool board game in the late 70s called "Superstition".  IIRC there were gallows, guillotines (without blades in them, duh), and other instruments of death on the path.  I don't remember much else about the game but it sure was cool.  Also we had "STOP THIEF!" which was kinda strange with its big scanner that gave you clues as to the thief's whereabouts, with sound effects of glass breaking (entering a window), a door opening (going into/leaving a building entrance), and a button that would send the cops to the spot you think the thief is at.  But it was pretty fun.

My cousin had that game.  I remember playing it with him endlessly after he got it for Christmas.

I just have the base game.  No expansions yet.  Does the Dunwich Horror expansion add a lot to the game play to make it worth buying?

Well, the expansions cost almost as much as the game. It adds another board, about a third of the side, more monsters, more cards, and more rules. The Dunwich board is cool, but it doesn't always come into play during a regular game. Unleashing the Dunwich Horror, which roams around the board, can happen but it hasn't happened to us yet. It also makes the game more difficult, since there are more possible locations for gates to open. Plus, the new cards which feature "gate bursts" that can destroy elder sign-sealed gates has screwed us several times.

It's fun. I want to get the other expansions, but like I said, they cost not a small amount of money.

I have a decent collection of games (more than 100), but only a few expansions.  When I need to choose between buying expansions or completely different games, I usually end up buying completely different games.

I bought one of my nephews LAST NIGHT ON EARTH and the GROWING HUNGER expansion for Christmas.  I played it with him and his brother last week - they were the humans I and was the zombies.  I was in control for most of the game, but they beat me on their very last move.
