Hey everybody, I just wanted to let you all know there is a 35mm screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey in Austin, TX at the Alamo Ritz April 12-14. It's a good chance to see a very good film in a great theatre. 35mm is a good format but I prefer a 70mm print. The 70mm frame is so ginormous, twice the 35mm frame size, it captures and delivers so much more light and detail. I would one day like to see a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey with a live orchestra playing the score. I saw Murnau's Faust with a live 10-piece band and the physical power of a live band made the seats vibrate and my ears ring with pleasure. I think that would do well with 2001. I hope to see a packed house.

Being I live in Michigan,not much chance of me seeing it on the big screen any time soon. But I DID see it at a drive-in (of all places!) when I was about 7 years old on it's intial release! Of course...being only seven...I found the apemen to be the coolest part...and feel asleep...but not before I dumped a soda pop in the rear speaker of my Dad's car.

I just bought a used vhs not too long ago....I never get bored of watching it. For me,it's just one of those movies I can watch over and over again! Have a good time...oh...and welcome to the board!  :smile:

I just wish that Warner Bros. had made some 70mm IMAX prints for its anniversary this year since IMAX stuff has become fairly popular.  Would've been a beautiful thing...

I too have a VHS copy of this film, a release from Rhino that came packaged with the soundtrack on CD. The soundtrack is an excellent compilation of wonderful music. Both experimental and classical, this CD comes with extended cuts of each track, most notably on Adventures.

Hey Scottie, haven't seen anything from you for a while.  I also saw 2001 on it's initial release, I was 13 so I found most of it cool to watch, except the ending was very confusing to me. I have since seen it numerous times on TCM and on DVD at least once.

It would be great to this on a large screen with a great sound system.

I'd love to see this film on the big screen. Later on this month at a Showcase festival here in NZ El Topo and The Holy Mountain are playing so I'm going to go see them.

I saw this at age 10 on a Cinerama wraparound screen in Washington DC, on its first release.  It was a major event, with people handing out programs in the lobby like it was an opera or some such.
No, I do not still have that program -- Yes, it would probably be quite valuable today --
I have no clue as to what the mm of Cinerama was, but as it involved 3 separate projectors showing on a single wraparound screen, maybe 210mm?  (3 x 70mm)
Anyway, even though the sound quality was not what it is today in modern theatres, it was still an amazing event that sticks with me 40 years later.  I've rewatched the film a number of times in a number of places & different formats -- even outdoor/parking-lot cinema(!) -- and yeah, it holds up.

I'm hoping that someone will offer a screening of GIGLI with a live orchestra playing the score. 

Still the ultimate "hard" sci-fi film. It dares to revel in the stillness and serenity of outer space. I don't think this is a cosy film though, the 'Sentinel' seems to shout at humans to evolve further on every contact never allowing us to stagnate for too long in one form. The effects actually still stand up pretty well for the most part despite very visible wires on the first spacecraft seen and some overly "Thunderbirds" style vehicle models in the moon section.

I'll have to see it again -- I don't remember visible wires, and I'm a "visible wire" kinda guy!
