Title: Remind me again why it is they're remaking The Host...
Post by: Joe the Destroyer on August 11, 2007, 11:35:48 AM
I hate to say it, but in comparison to this, I can almost understand remaking some of the other Asian horror flicks, simply because enough of the people that will go to see it don't even realize it's a remake.  The Host, on the other hand, has been hyped enough that most of the major film goers have already seen the original, and even some of the casuals will say, "Wait a minute! Didn't they release this a couple years ago?"

Sure, it was only in select theaters and not many people saw it, but even still it just seems pointless to even bother with a remake of this film, especially since it did get some form of a US theatrical release.  Not as pointless, of course, as the April Fools Day remake, but it comes close.

I think I can answer that one. It's an Asian film. Because the powers that be in Hollywood think an  all-Asian horror or action movie will not appeal to a mass market. So, they'll throw a lotta MTV style teens and music in it,a known box office draw name, and dummy it down ,because we Americans are brainless idiots! Much the same reason that the Godzilla movies of yesteryear had American inserts and stars added in,and why Italian movie directors changed their names for American screens.

Meh.  I pretty much figured, but I still think this is the most pointless remake in history, especially when they just released the DVD.

I still have yet to check out The Host on DVD. I'll probably get around to it this weekend as I've been really wanting to see it.

Cause they are greedy and take all foreign (usually japanese) movies and make them "their own" and take everything smart about the film and throw it out the window and make a piece-o-garbage teeny bopper flick. uhg my head hurts thinking about a remake of this fantastic film. i mean for gods sake it just came out last year! the special effects, camera work  and acting are top notch! i know its in korean but seriously its pointless.

That, and the fact that thousands of moviegoers can't read fluently enough to keep up with the action in a subtitled film.  And I think we can agree that dubbing is not the best way to go for a few different reasons.

I was going to say, ewww... Subtitles!

I was getting ready to close the store one night when a guy and his dumb ass girlfriend (who asked if we sold flip-flops in a record store) came to the counter and held up a copy of Pan's Labyrinth.

Him:  Have you guys seen this
Me: Yeah.
Him: Is it s**tty?
Me: No it's great.
Him: Oh.  I've been seeing a lot of commrcials for it.  It looks good but then I saw subtitles.  That's pretty disappointing.
Me: It's not my fault you can't read.

He got real mad and threatened me but not before his girlfriend bought a Harry Potter lunchbox.  People usually hit me up about buying movies at the store since I have the reputation of that guy.  I try to sell them on foreign stuff, horror and otherwise and it never works.  99% of the time when I say it's foreign, they get all hesitant and ask if it's subbed and then turn it down.

+1 Karma for saying what we've all wanted to say.

Ditto.

I hope the filmmakers can get a good laugh out of the crushing Irony of a movie that portrays Americans as arrogant show stealers being Americanized.

In all fairness, "The Ring" was better than Ringu...of course, The Ring 2 (american) was bad (as in I don't want it here, I want someone shot in the knee) even though they tried to involve the original creator.

In all fairness, they should have to hand out flyers advertizing the DVD outside every multiplex. If you refuse to read subtitles you should be forced to watch cheap Hentai with cheaper dubbing till you crack.

I finally got to see The Host this past weekend.

I give it a ***1/2 out of ****.

One of the best monster/creature movies that I've seen in quite some time. I loved how they had the creature out in broad daylight during a lot of scenes and you also get to see the creature doing it's thing less than 15 minutes into the film.

The creature effects and movements were superb and better some of the CGI stuff that I see most American studios churn out.  WETA does it once again.

I can't believe that they're already talking about remaking this...........

And as for some peope saying that the movie is Anti-American, it portrays the south Korean govenment as being just as stubborn, arrogant and bull headed as the Americans in the film as well.

I bought this DVD yesterday.  I thought the first half of the movie was excellent, but it ran out of steam in the second half.  This is partially due to the length of the movie . . . they should have shaved about 20 minutes off the running time.  Maybe a remake will improve on the second half of the movie.

Normally I'd "understand" a remake from a cynical point of view, but when the main attraction of what you're remaking is a monster that already looks fantastic, I get confused.

And when I get confused, I get cranky.
