Title: Charlie Sheen- didn't know where else to put it.
Post by: HappyGilmore on March 09, 2011, 10:59:47 PM
So, the past 3-4 weeks or so we've been barraged with Charlie Sheen all over the news, internet, radio, and TMZ and such.  Lots of talk about Tiger's Blood, Winning, Godesses, he's on a drug named Charlie Sheen, etc, etc.

So, what's everyone's thoughts on the apparent nervous breakdown/addiction/bi-polar disorder of the actor?  I'm sure he'll find work in movies what with his current new found fame, but who's to say how long it'll be before he goes deeper off the edge.

I read on espn.com a few days ago he's in talks with Mavs owner Mark Cuban about having his own tv show. As for how far he falls off the deep end I'm not sure. Either he's a genius or a loon. He's got more attention during his breakdown after finishing rehab since Major League I'm guessing. I think he'll land somewhere soon because he's revelant for the first time in a whle and is in high demand.

I think it's a shame that the more off-the-wall and incoherent you are, the more rich and famous you become.  Imagine an actor behaving like this back in, say, the 1950s?  He'd be blackballed by every movie and TV production company.  Instead, Sheen will probably end up making more money than ever.  It's amazing what seems to entertain us these days.  Sheen is like a train wreck . . . a horrible, frightening mess . . . but when you see him, you can't seem to look away.

A biproduct of the Reality Show generation I'm afraid.

Yes.  I'm still waiting for reality shows to fade away . . . but they seem to keep coming back stronger and stronger.

Jeez, I saw the title, "Charlie Sheen - didn't know where else to put it" and I thought Sheen was being accused of some kind of impropriety. I wondered how he came up with such a lame excuse. :bouncegiggle:

I've said it before. Mark my words, someday we'll be electing our presidents in an elimination reality show.

THE GONG SHOW was much more entertaining than AMERICAN IDOL.  There.  I said it.  Sue me.

He reminds me of Yngwie Malmsteen, a guitar player from back in the '80s who was always good for a quote or two.  He got in an argument with a stewardess on an airplane and at one point told her that he would "Unleash the foking fury."    :bouncegiggle:

He's strangely fascinating/entertaining. It's a trainwreck for sure. And he seems to be more popular with young adults in their mid '20's than he ever was. Granted, for the wrong reasons. There's songs about him online now.

Only if they hired Britney Spears and Tonya Harding as nannies.

My personal opinion is that the last binge Sheen went on caused something to snap. He seems like a smart guy, but he's now convinced himself he's smarter than everyone else ever. It's kinda sad, really, but in an unsuitably entertaining way.

On that note, you may love this.  It's basically that video, songified:

"Winning" by Charlie Sheen

"I have one gear: Go epic winning."  Song is so great.

He's obviously mentally ill.  Worsened by substance abuse of course.   It's sad.    I'd be morbidly interested in knowing if he would pass an exam for competency.

It reminds me of a time in med school when the psychiatrists showed us a video of a man who was manic, and obviously psychotic.  Our class laughed as we watched the video -- watching something that awful and extreme and unfamiliar, how would one not laugh?

The psychiatrists were disturbed at our reaction.   Kind of silly, considering that they should have been the first people to know that laughter is often a defense mechanism, not a value judgement per se.

If you've seen enough manic people, you still laugh a bit at it.  ICU, ER and trauma staff all have a certain "gallows humor" as a self-defense, and seeing the severely mentally ill, you develop the same defenses there too.

Personally, I don't find it appropriate to mock the guy.  He's someone's kid, someone's son.  If my son were acting like that, my heart would be breaking.   At the same time, I can understand the urge to laugh.

I've always liked Sheen as an actor.  I find him amusing now with all his drug fuelled craziness.  He's an eccentric rich guy who is filling column inches like no one else.

I don't have any moral judgements to make about him though because I don't usually make moral judgements about someone's lifestyle choices.  But I'm more than happy to laugh at the nutty things he says.  I'm also in awe of how many porn stars he can burn through and still his appetite isn't satisfied.  The guy's a frickin MACHINE!!!!!  :teddyr:

He's going on tour next month now - anyone know anything about this?  Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning for my city and I'm considering grabbing a couple.  I can't help but think that this will be entertaining at the very least...

I heard like, three things about it.  One was that it's some kinda motivational speech type thing.  Another was that it was a stand-up thing.  Another said it was half motivational speech/half comedy with some other type of stuff.  Lord knows.

I do kinda agree with Zapranoth about mocking the guy.  It is kind of a shame to see the downfall he's been on.  But it's strangely fascinating.  I don't know.  He is a grown man, and I don't think he's that mentally ill.  I've seen far worse in that department.  I guess non of us can really say what he is until a doctor diagnosis him, right?

In the meantime...wow.
