Title: Eschenbach, Germany
Post by: The Burgomaster on May 02, 2011, 12:39:06 PM
I may need to go there for work.  I'll probably be there for about a week.  I can't find much information about Eschenbach online.  I believe it is a small, "non-tourist" town.  Anyone know anything about it?  Any hotel, restaurant, bar, or general "things to do" recommendations?

Of course, I could always spend my time doing this:

Or drink the blood of some young virgins...  :teddyr:

But seriously Burgo, whereabouts is it? There's a few different districts with that name.

I hear the Holiday Inn on deutsche route 55 has a hell of a piano bar.

Seriously, though, it doesn't look like there's much there. The black forest is not too far west. I've always wanted to drive through the black forest. Also, the Czech border is just east and Prague is not too far off. Prague is amazing, and in the Springtime, too.

The thing is, its a small place, with public transport, and REALLY cheap flights all over the place.  My sister is in small-town Norway all winter and decided to just fly places.  She few to Paris for $30, London for $20, Brussels for $30.

Raynair flys from all kinds of places, I just found a $30 flight to London from there:

Germany
Baden-Baden - Baden Airpark - As "Karlsruhe-Baden"
Berlin - Berlin Schönefeld Airport
Bremen - Bremen Airport Base
Hahn - Frankfurt-Hahn Airport Base - As "Frankfurt (Hahn)"
Lübeck - Lübeck Airport - As "Hamburg-Lübeck"
Magdeburg - Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport
Memmingen - Memmingen Airport - As "Munich West (Memmingen)"
Weeze - Weeze Airport Base - As "Dusseld (Weeze)"

with a  little imagination, you have the whole continent to play with!  Damn, but I'm jealous.

There are about 10 Eschenbachs in Germany, so you'll have to be a little more specific

Unfortunately, I'll be working every day.  So, my "fun" will be limited to whatever I can find in or very near the town after business hours.  My client told me she thinks there is only one hotel and two restaurants in the town.  I hope they have several bars . . .

Oberpfalz

Ahhh ok. This is only nine minutes away from Grafenwöhr. We go shopping in Grafenwöhr about 3 or 4 times a year as they have a pretty big U.S. Army military installation there (though Grafenwöhr is a two hours drive from where I live).
I can't tell you much about Eschenbach because I've never actually been there.
I can however recommend checking out Little Switzerland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fr%C3%A4nkische_Schweiz). But only if you have a long afternoon or even better, a whole day to spare. It's quite beautiful and there is lots to discover: endless green forests, meadows, creeks, hiking trails, crystal clear small trout ponds that shimmer green (nothing chemical), castles, old ruins.
There is a town located in Little Switzerland called Pottenstein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottenstein,_Bavaria) (38 minutes drive from Eschenbach) where you will find many neat touristy stuff, like Die Teufelshöhle (http://www.lochstein.de/hoehlen/D/fralb/fs/teufels/teufelshoehle.htm) (The Devil's Cave). It's a Limestone cave that goes 1.5 km (almost 1 mile) deep into a mountain.

For local German cuisine check out one of their Beer gardens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biergarten) for lunch or dinner. Found this site (http://www.grafenwoehr.com/%28e01ysafraka2nprrpohd1xng%29/category.aspx?f_k_=920081&cat_id=196) that lists a few places in the Eschenbach area.

It would appear that Eschenbach is like the Springfield of Deutschland.

I missed that when I posted. That's too bad you won't have enough time to explore the area.
Looks like after business hours hiking is going to be the only fun thing to do. Unless you happen to be there when they have one of their many town's activities. Here is their Calendar of Events, google translated  :teddyr:

The "Warriors and and Soldiers comraderie" and "Oven Proof" sounds intriguing on June 19.
