Title: Loved films you hated
Post by: Living_Dead_Girl on March 03, 2012, 03:36:14 AM
I saw a post by Mofo Rising "Hated films you loved" So I was wondering if anyone has exsperienced the opposite?

For me it was the 2004 film Sideways... The most pretentious Movie I ever saw... The movie had "I want an award and look artistic and smart" written all over it. I mean an aspiring author / wine taster. traveling through wine country, while his friend who is soon to be married has sex with everything that moves. And everyone in the movie could not stop going on about what "where am I in life?" I could not take the torture and simply walked out. It was just too much. Got very good reviews. And unfortunatly I am not the only one who has hated one loved movie.

Spill the beans. xD

The Wizard of Oz.

Kidding.

RCMerchant, I do hate it when people asume I would like this or that. When I hate that tv show or movie, and everyone thinking I love it makes me want that tv show or movie to just die, At least thats what I find 0_o and Crackers, I found inception had one thing in common with the matrix. A very intense, deep intelligent story line, but most people won't be able to follow the story itself first time they see it. I found the same thing with both movies. I love the matrix but inception is meh! BTW Claws No one I know likes silent hill xD Everyone tells me to just not watch it, or I will regret it. lol!

Nothing I really "hate";  considering some of the crap I've sat through, pretty much anything above the level of a college film project is good enough for me not to hate it.  But some I just don't get and found extremely disappointing.

The Silence of the Lambs - was Anthony Hopkins supposed to be scary in that?  I found him kind of humorous.

The Shining - Jack Nicholson does his Jack Nicholson thing.  Yawn.

Gladiator - Russell Crowe had about 25% of the screen presence required for that to be a good movie.

Fargo - oh look,  everyone has Norwegian accents, isn't that the funniest thing you've ever seen in your life?  Um, no.

I actually love every film you've mentioned except for Gladiator, which I don't love but like a little. And my favorite among this is actually Fargo, and yes, I find the accents funny and adorable.

I'm probably gonna get a lot of flack for this one, but the original Psycho didn't really do much for me (though I wouldn't say I hated it, it just kinda bored me). Sorry Hitchcock.  :bluesad:

I also did not like Spider-Man 2, The Lord of The Rings movies or Sin City.

The Dark Knight.

To me it seems the director thought pattern went like that:  Joker is all powerful, but Batman has to win... let's give Batman an equally stupid and all-powerful power like x-ray vision. I know it has no sense whatsoever, but who cares. We need Joker shine, let's make every other character an idiot, including Batman. We need some serious drama, let's try to put a broken moral about how criminals and killers are somewhat oppressed by Batman. Joker is not enough, let's put Two-face. How? Somewhat, it does not really matter... AAAAHHH!

I thought Anthony Perkins gave an amazing performance in PSYCHO, but there are plenty of Hitchcock movies I like better.  I think a person almost had to have been one of the first audiences who saw it, not knowing going in what the "twist" was going to be, to really feel it.

I hated AMERICAN BEAUTY.  Found it really smarmy and pretentious.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK.  I hate everything about it: I hate that they flat-out fabricated most of the story, I hate every character, I hate Justin Timberlake's stupid face and Jesse Eisenberg's endless sulking, I hate the soundtrack, I even hate the way it looks.  But most of all I hate that everybody on earth praises it while ignoring ZODIAC.

"Hate" is probably too strong a word, but 2001 left me cold.  I admire that movie, but I didn't enjoy a second of it.

I feel the same way.  I think has more to do with the amount of hype and praise it gets.  They build it up to be something so gigantic and when you finally see it, you are sort of underwhelmed.  Felt the same thing while watching Silence of the Lambs, Blade Runner, Bonnie & Clyde, and Jaws.

GOOD WILL HUNTING. It's FIVE EASY PIECES, if the script were written by Dr. Phil. There are many "loved" films I think are overrated, but that's the only one I can think of that I actively hate.

I think we should all start looking at each other's profiles.

The Producers, Night of the Hunter, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, all  3 Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz and Magnolia   :hatred: :hatred: :hatred:
I can understand your opinion on all of these, particularly them LOTR movies (though I really like the first, I hated the last movie more than anything I've paid to see...)  I think the original THE PRODUCERS is... meh.  But NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and WIZARD OF OZ?  You must have had a tough childhood.  Come back to them when you pass 40, and you may be surprised at their charms.  Two movies that weren't so big as you might imagine, flops in fact, but have over the decades elbowed their way to the front of the pack because they're very great movies.

the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

For some reasom eveyone assumes that being I like BAD films, and cult movies-or what the f**k ever-I would like this stupid musical. I DON'T.
You hate ROCKY HORROR 'cause everyone's shoved your face in it, and it's so over-exposed it's terminal.  It's really a lot of stupid fun, with some awesome songs... and MEATLOAF only sings one of them (yes, I remember you hate MEATLOAF.)

Actually,I don't really hate these two movies but I never cared for them as much as pretty much everyone else I know....Casablanca and Citizen Cane. And I'm prepared for indignation,gang....I'm used to it. :teddyr:
Well, it's KANE, Sugar,   ...and that one'd be a let down if people kept talking it up.  CASABLANCA?  You don't love old Hollywood movies.  It's one of their best.  Maybe it's BOGIE, who sure wasn't pretty...? And my mother despised INGRID BERGMAN who I always can't help myself for looking at sideways...    :twirl:

I hated TITANIC.  Emphasis on ICK.  A titan ick is right.

The Godfather.  Well, I don't know about hate.  I find it incredibly boring and difficult to take seriously.  I've never watched it all the way through and probably never will.

Terminator 2.  One of the most misbegotten sequels of all time.  Utter rubbish.  It doesn't even exist, as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, Titanic!  Man, that movie sucks.  I watched it and found myself anticipating the lines and actions before they happened.

Add AVATAR to the list, too.  I despised it.  Written for an audience who had never seen Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, or anything similar; not to mention for those with an IQ below that of a sea-urchin.  Sure, the direction and effects were superb, but the story was so cliched and hackneyed, the messages so heavyhanded, and the sequence of events so predictable, that I spent weeks afterwards ranting about it to anyone who mentioned it.

It's Cameron's Curse.  I find it hard to imagine how the director who brought us Terminator and Aliens could come up with such cliched, heavyhanded and predictable crap as Titanic and Avatar.

I love Hitchcock's work. But I gotta admit he had a lot off good work besides psycho. Also even though American beauty is a favorite movie off mine, I can see the pretentious streak in it. sometimes a well thought out movie has a fine line between Pretentionious and an acctuall good job, that made a good, deep point, that makes sense. xD American Beauty gets away with it in my book though.

should add to my list..

I agree with all who said "Titanic." I think Cameron is an overrated a- hole! "Aliens" is cool but I was always partial to the first one that Ridley Scott did. Thought 3 and 4 were crap. Same with "Terminator" I only liked the first one. I'm so sorry to say this, but I have never really liked "Jurassic Park." I know I should, I'm a Spielberg fan, but I just don't.

I really tried to like "Twilight" because I'm a big fan of Kristen Stewart's (all of her other movies are pretty good). But, all the hype, I just couldn't take it anymore! I didn't want to jump on the backlash bandwagon, but enough is enough.

Again, Twilight is not a loved film outside of its small audience.  Though you are right.  Kristen Stewart's other movies are pretty good, like The Runaways and Welcome to the Rileys.

Forrest Gump.  What an overblown, self-righteous piece of cynical, emotionally-manipulative crap.  Here's a white-washed, feel-good primer on American history, 1955-1983, as seen through the eyes of a mentally-handicapped man who in the feel-good high point of the film, is raped (yes, raped.  He is not in a position to give informed consent to Jenny, so it is rape.  Try making a movie where a man has sex with a mentally-handicapped woman, see how far you get) by the person he values most, all set to the tune of a medley of Baby Boomers' favorite songs.  Everything is so coldly calculated out -- here's a scene and song, cry to it; here's another scene and song, laugh but don't do so uproariously.  And don't forget to have a Dr. Pepper with it!

Life is  not a  box of chocklates or  almost  any pretentious  Tom Hanks movie. :teddyr:

I like Tom Hanks....he's come a long way from "Bosom Buddies".

I like two movies  he ever did, Volunteers with the late great John Candy being brainwashed by Communists , and  Saving Private Ryan.

Sorry, I loved GUMP.
And the mentally deficient deserve to have the same life experiences as the rest of us when they are of legal age.

My favorite part of Forest Gump is when Jenny pawns her bastard child off on Forest.  Yeah, sure, Forest, that's your kid.  Jenny's certainly not just using you one last time.  Lol.

I didn't like FORREST GUMP.  I think it's dumb and contrived.  I'm with Saucerman

I don't know how loved it is, but I really very strongly disliked RENT.  Not over gay elements or HIV or anything like that, but because it glorified people refusing to accept the consequences of their actions and living as drains on society's resources.  Nevermind the heavyhandedness of it -- the villain (who you know is bad because his name is "Coffin") is bad because he "sold out" and got "a real job" and his evil plan involves evicting these "artists" who are squatting in a tenement building, so that he can follow up with urban renewal and beautification.

There aren't enough words to tell you how many things I disliked about Batman Begins and Dark Knight.

... well, there probably are, but I don't care to type them all.

I'm not a fa of the American Pie movies either.

I liked them, soundtrack has to be the best  one I've heard in years and it stayed close to the Batman comic 'mythos.' Of course, I am a  huge fan of the schlocky 66 TV show. :teddyr:

Twilight and all its nasty little sequels-REAL vampires DON'T sparkle

Since when is the Twilight series beloved?

Most sane people agree the Twilight series are pure rubish. But you gotta remember Not everyone is sane... In fact most off the Twilight fans are either Pre-Teen girls or soccor mums. There is a lot off them.

I absolutly LOVE! Kristen Stewart out side off twilight. She is a cool chick and very good actress outside twilight.

I do not think Kristen stewart could do much with the Charector Bella Swan. Think about it, Stephanie Myer, does not really Describe Bellas Charector or Personality, Besides being a whinny, boring girl who lets her boyfriend do everything for her. What could Kristen get out off that? And even if Kristen Stewart decided to get a bit creative about it. Stephanie myer did Purposly write Bella like a blank canvas so any angsty Teenage girl could put themselves in her place. So Kristen was most likely banned from acctually acting!

Check out her Movie "Speak" a very good movie. She does a really good job in that aswell. Girls say they could relate to the highs and lows Bella Goes through, but speak reminded me more off my Highschool days.

I think certain movies are designed for Oscar consideration. I think Forest Gump is one of them. They get a huge star like Tom Hanks, tell this emotional story of struggle mixed with some charm and with the right marketing, and America swallows it up every time. Which is ok with me if it's done with someone like Hanks, who is a great actor. But it bugs the hell out of me when they do it with someone like Brad Pitt, whom, in my opinion is a weak actor. Hollywood is a close knit club and they pick which films and performers they want to make or break. I just seen a trailer for the new George Clooney movie and I thought "More of the same old thing." Americans are told what movies are good and bad, it's only free thinkers like all of us here that have the guts to say "We make up our own minds."

Ledger played an interesting character, it just wasn't the Joker.
