Title: Unknown Island
Post by: Gerry on July 10, 2001, 01:29:19 PM
Taped this one off of AMC a couple of weeks ago and finally got around to watching it.

The dinosaurs were hilarious.  Men-in-suits, men-in-suits!  Plus there was a giant sloth that battles with a T-rex.  If you are fans of truly bad dinosaur movies, this is a must see.

Alas, no cave women in buckskin bikinis, but you do get some forties-style, rough-and-tumble brawling between the superstitious crew and the hard-drinking, hard-fighting captain.  Plus it stars Richard Denning who went on to other art films such as CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED (and don't forget NAKED PARADISE).

UNKNOWN ISLAND plays again on AMC on July 20 (very late or early on the 21 depending on your time zone).

The click that Andrew shows of the dinosaur falling was due to the actor in the suit passing from the heat and lack of ventilation.

Andrew's Review is a classic.  Sums the movie up perfectly.

Please note that my 5 year old cheered when the T-rex in the featured clip fell over.  5 year olds will like this movie.  They don't have a problem with continuity errors either.

I love Unknown Isalnd.  If you could appreciate it at all, you should definately check out "The Mighty Gorga" from Something Weird video if you can.  The giant Ape's eyeballs are painted on!  The people in U Island were indeed rough and tumble.

That reminds me of a funny part of "Nightmare of Ecstacy: The Ed Wood Jr. story".  Ron ashcroft is filming "the Astounding She-Monster" (a great b-movie) and Conrad Brooks or someone is in this bear suit and he goes "Ron get me outta this thing!!" He gets the head off and it turned out the guy was smoking in the bear suit!

The "Planet of the Apes" box set included a behind the scenes disc (2 hours!) hosted by Roddy McDowall that had some neat tidbits.  One was that the actors were encouraged to have stuff like milkshakes and other soft foods when in costume.  Seems that chewing would often dislodge the latex appliances.

Is this the same "Behind the Planet of the Apes" documentary that aired recently on AMC or is it a different one?  Or do you have any idea?

The AMC one started out with Roddy McDowell in some CA state park by a stream introducing it as one of the primary shooting locations of POTA.  I taped it but I haven't had time to watch any more than that yet.  It was approx. 2 hrs.

That sounds like the one.  I really enjoyed it.

Roddy was always a class act, wasen't he? Even being in the Golem can't dimish his style. Just like Vincent  Price.

Roddy was always a class act -

Yup, always kept a secret, never ratted on his friends (or his enemies), and never said bad things about anybody he worked with, ever.  In fact my best friend, when he got a chance to talk with McDowell at a convention appearance, wantedly to playfully tease him with the question "Mr. McDowell is there ANYBODY you haven't enjoyed working with?"

He didn't though.
