I have been called a badass before, Reverend, and I might qualify (I doubt it); but I would't go on this list because I haven't been in a film (bad or otherwise). I probably should have specified, but it is in the "bad movies" forum. It's nice of you to include your friends, though. Maybe we should have a topic about badass posters (which is most of us except Wyrewizard, in my opinion).

Jackie Chan is a badass by accident, which is what's cool about him. If we add him, does that mean Jet Li's comin', too?

Well, I'm more afraid of Thomas than Johnson. I'm tempted to include Ray Liotta, just because I like to hear him yell curse words.

Karloff was definitely a badass in THE BODY SNATCHER.  He killed a puppy with a shovel for barking too loud, for goodness sake.  Plus, he killed Bela, which makes Bela a wimp in my opinion.  (I can say this because RC Merchant isn't around right now).

I just watched 1971's Red Sun and I almost had a fanboy orgasm seeing Bronson and Mifune next to each other. I didn't even know Mifune could speak English (better than Jet Li, I might add). It was damn sweet.

Would it be wrong for me to assume that Red Sun is like a buddy cop movie? It had all required elements. In any case, check it out.

Anybody here who does not know me, does not read much of this board. You will notice my name was brought up in a thread about badasses. Even you brought up my name.

Do you recall me asking anybody to make a reference to me in this thread?

Of course not. It's just natural to associate me with references to badass, a***ole, prick, self-righteous...think I'll end the associations there or else this could turn into a long post.

Such associations are humorous, intended in good fun, and often true; plus I'm an attention whore and simply eat up the attention.

Did you really refer to Matthew Broderick as a badass? How could you type that without laughing yourself into at least three typos?  :bouncegiggle: :twirl: :bouncegiggle:

Seriously, Broderick? He tends to play wuss roles (well I might add). The closest he came to being a badass was in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and even that was a stretch. I have not seen that war film he was in; maybe he was a hardass in that.

His character displays physical courage in the film, but his real showing comes from his moral courage.  He is not a badass, he is a true blue officer - a man who can lead men in battle, no matter what the conditions.

You just defined a badass. There a few different types, and that was one of 'em.

Now wouldn't you consider his character of Mouse for Ladyhawke to be a badass?

Mouse sends soldiers on a dizzying scramble trying to catch him, crawls through spaces only a rodent would, swims into freezing water to save a wolf from drowning only to be mauled by the wolf, and ends up in the arms of a monk...uh...forget that last part. :tongueout:

I haven't seen Ladyhawke, but from your desciption it seems he ran from a fight and perfomed actions only a mental deficit would allow. I'd call that survivability from a hippie. Did he dispose of his pursuers after promising them "a war [they] won't believe?"

I actually like Broderick quite a lot (but not like that, Menard  :teddyr:). He just has a gentleness about him that precludes the common perception of badassery.  To me, the true badass always has a cold, calculatingly tough demeanor. In actors, that (again, for me) should come across in more than one role; he or she should leave people wondering if that is the real him or her. Broderick almost always looks innocently mischievous, not tough. I could see myself being a bit nervous saying something less than nice about and then meeting someone like Bogart or Eastwood. Broderick? Not so much.

I agree. Broderick is likable and I enjoy seeing him in films, but he doesn't inspire me to wet myself like Lee Van Cleef might.

I nominate Morris Day.

Do keep in mind that the wolf and hawk in the film are the day and night alter egos of two of the main characters so cursed as to keep them apart. Saving the wolf was saving Rutger Hauer's character, though as a wolf he has no consciousness of Mouse as a comrade, or of what he did to him as a wolf when he is in human form.

He evaded a detachment of soldiers, mostly, who were all bigger than him. He also faced down the trapper/bounty hunter, who was also much bigger than him.

They call him...Mouse...the badass. :teddyr:

Definitely wanted to be thought of as a badass...  but never made it.  Starting his career as the vulnerable, non-threatening "bad" kid in THE BREAKFAST CLUB killed any chance at badassery he might have had.  A true badass would rather be caught and tortured by the Viet Cong than discuss his feelings with Molly Ringwald.

I'd probably show my feelings with her... then kick ass outta the car! :teddyr:

For a lot of us growing up in the '60s and '70s, the definition of badass is: Steve McQueen.

I can't believe I haven't mention Lee Marvin. How could I forget him? And Humphrey Bogart? The later had his name turned into an action expressing overbearing badassery.

Michael Parks (The Hitman, 1991) ~ the most unrepentant, unlovable badass in any movie.

You have to include the dyspeptic Urbano Barberini in the schlock-gasm that is the two Italian Gor movies (the latter of which made it into the annals of MST3K). And who could forget the beefiest man yet to emerge from the Canadian wasteland, Jon Mikl Thor? He killed more people as a zombie and a demonic hair-band singer throughout the 80's than I have family members (btw Jon Mikl Thor, please don't read this and kill my family.)

While he did not win a gold medal for anything done in a television show or movie, he should have won at least a silver in the Parmistanian Smiting Event for killing a man with his thighs and maiming thirty-seven people with a pommel horse as Jonathan Cabot in the documentary (I think) Gymkata.

Derf mentioned James Cagney in passing -- Cagney deserves more than a passing reference --

While he thought of himself primarily as a "hoofer"(dancer), Cagney pretty much set the bar for badass in films like "Public Enemy" and "White Heat".

In "White Heat", for but one example, he's locked one of his own gang members in the trunk of a car.  The gang member gets jostled around a lot & then they stop the car to take care of some business.  When Cagney comes back to the car, the gang member in the trunk is saying "Hey!  It's hard to breathe in here!".  Cagney says "Oh, you can't breathe, eh?  Well let me punch you some air holes!!", and empties his revolver into the trunk --

Um . . . yeah.  I think that sort of employee/employer relationship pretty much defines badass --

Don't get me wrong...Karloff could be as bad as you wanna be! Check out BEDLAM -where he is the evil head of a nuthouse. Karloff made more GOOD horror films...Lugosi struggled through garbage...yet he made them memorable just because he was in them. Karloff and Lugosi are BOTH LEGENDARY badassess...along with one I would think should be on here....Peter Lorre...whatta evil ittle SOB he was!

All those guys were great. St. Peter, St. Boris and St. Bela haved scared the crap out audiences for almost a century.

Peter Lorre,in particular, was not so much a physical evil presence...his horror dealt mostly on a psychological level...as in MAD LOVE (which I have yet to see in it's entirty!)  the child killer in M, The villian in Hithcock's the MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH,....and every other moie he has ever been in. Lorre was a little bad ass weasel. But not one you would want to f%ck with! Unless, of course, you were Humphrey Bogart. Boogie had balls of steel.
