For me it's FISTFULL OF DOLLARS gotta love a classic does Wagons East count? Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Zapranoth on April 21, 2007, 12:06:59 AM I think that's not an answerable question.
My vote, though, is probably either your vote, or perhaps, Unforgiven. There is a dark, inexorable majesty to the fall of William Munny back into his old ways. The moment when the prostitute rides out to him to tell him that Ned was killed, and wordlessly, Eastwood turns and picks up the whiskey, starts drinking it seriously and grimly. All the meekness and self-doubt just goes, and the old anger is all right back there, you can see it in the lines in his face -- a killer's face. And then the last gunfight. "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," and Hackman's character gets the shotgun in cold blood. Vengeance in cold rain -- Eastwood looking as old and etched as a legend. Awesome. There isn't and hasn't been any actor in a Western who could do a movie like that one, showing the shades of gray so well. Once Upon a Time in the West was very good, also. Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Pilgermann on April 21, 2007, 01:35:13 AM The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly gets my vote and it's also one of my all-time favorite films. I've been trying to watch more westerns lately. The only other Leone western I've seen is Once Upon a Time in the West which is also fantastic.
Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Jack on April 21, 2007, 09:06:23 AM I've been getting more interested in Westerns too for the last year or so. Favorite is probably The Outlaw Josey Wales, though Clint's Man With No Name trilogy is awesome as well. Once Upon A Time In The West is another good one. Also Pale Rider.

Title: Re: Best Western Post by: felgekarp on April 23, 2007, 03:58:40 AM My favourites are
The Wild Bunch Once Upon A Time In The West The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Back To The Future Part 3. Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Oldskool138 on April 23, 2007, 10:04:19 AM My favs:
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (the most epic Western ever made) The Magnificent Seven (all-star cast, great music and story...and a remake to boot!) The Quick and the Dead (pure popcorn western) Gunslinger (laughably bad western with John Ireland's glowing hands and ability to teleport himself all over town) :bouncegiggle: High Noon (Gary Cooper, Lee Van Cleef, Grace Kelly, Lloyd Bridges et al. A good look at human nature, plus a cool gimick [movie is shown in near-real time]) I wish someone would make another (good) western. Open Range (2003) was okay but not great. Title: Re: Best Western Post by: fortunato on April 23, 2007, 11:51:18 AM The Unforgiven is the only western I've seen more than once. I hate that genre.
Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Neville on April 24, 2007, 04:46:35 AM I'd say either "The good, the bad and the ugly" or "Once upon a time in the west". Close seconds would be "The otlaw Jossie Wales", "Unforgiven", "Ride the High Country" and even spaghetti westerns such as "Tepepa" or "The big gundown".
Title: Re: Best Western Post by: RCMerchant on April 24, 2007, 05:48:34 AM As a kid,I was hooked on reaaaal old Hopalong Cassidy wsterns they had on channel 46.
Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Ometiklan on April 25, 2007, 07:53:53 PM In no Paticular order
El Dorado Mackenna's Gold The Magnificent Seven Will Penny The War Wagon Major Dundee I could rattle off A ton more but these came to mind! Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Scott on April 25, 2007, 08:10:13 PM My Top Westerns are:
The Magnificient Seven The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Fistful Of Dynamite My Name Is Nobody Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Dances With Wolves Shane Once Upon A Time In The West The Treasure Of Sierra Madre High Plains Drifter The Great Silence Dead Man Destry Rides Again Bandolero Tombstone One Eyed Jacks Django Open Range The Cowboys The Shootist The Outlaw The Oxbow Incident The Wild Bunch Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid 100 Rifles Little Big Man The Ballad Of Cable Hogue Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Neville on April 26, 2007, 03:11:35 AM In no Paticular order El Dorado Mackenna's Gold The Magnificent Seven Will Penny The War Wagon Major Dundee I could rattle off A ton more but these came to mind! Mmm... those two are great, although a bit flawed. "Major Dundee" has finally been restored in a special edition that tries to solve the continuity problems and provide a more satisfying experience. I hope somebody ends up doing the same for "McKenna's Gold", they say the original cut was around three hours long. Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Pilgermann on April 26, 2007, 03:12:57 PM These are the only westerns I own (and the majority of what I've seen):
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly--As I've mentioned, this is the best! Once Upon a Time in the West--A pretty remarkable film. The Ox-Bow Incident--Very fine movie. Unforgiven--Harsh and wonderful. Django--Good fun! My Darling Clementine--Excellent, excellent movie! The Wild Bunch--Not my favorite, but it's a very good film. The Great Silence--A bleak movie, but worthwhile. God's Gun/Kid Dynamite (crappy Digiview DVD)--God's Gun is horrible! But it has some funny bits. I haven't watched Kid Dynamite High Plains Drifter--A bit odd but good. My Name is Nobody--Not everything in it works, but it's still a great movie. Rio Bravo (actually, I haven't watched this yet) Others I've seen that qualify as westerns: Dances With Wolves--Decent film from what I remember. Old Yeller--Tragic! The Terror of Tiny Town-- :teddyr: Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Gerry on April 26, 2007, 03:43:29 PM THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY is by far my favorite, but I would also put the following in my top 10:
A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST THEY CALL ME NOBODY THEY CALL ME TRINITY TRUE GRIT RED RIVER DJANGO UNFORGIVEN Title: Re: Best Western Post by: JaseSF on April 26, 2007, 07:58:20 PM I could never seem to get into Westerns as a genre although the names in some B-movie Westerns do pique my interest a bit. The only Western I own (on VHS) is HIGH NOON. Have to admit to enjoying WESTWORLD if one could really call that a Western and the Twilight Zone episode set in the Old West.
Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Dennis on April 26, 2007, 09:12:46 PM My top favorites are:
The Shootist Big Jake Shane Little Big Man Rustler's Rhapsody Title: Re: Best Western Post by: Neville on April 26, 2007, 10:57:19 PM "The Shootist" is a great one. I've always considered a precedent of "Unforgiven", because it was directed by one of EEastwood's mentors, Don Siegel.
