And it still has it! What can i say. Its a likable movie. Easy going, and of corse the best part belongs to Peter O'Toole,as the ageing heroic actor Alan Swann. Some roles are so made for an actor, the thought of anyone else trying to do it is impossable to contemplate. And, it do give good quote! Like when Swann swaggers into the ladies room... "Hey, this is for ladies! And he unzips and says, "So's this, but occasionaly i have to run a little water through it" That and , when Benjy says, after Swann fire hoses to the balcony below, "I think i'm going to be unwell", and Swann says"My boy, Ladies are unwell, Gentleman Vomit" Btw, what ever happened to Joe Bolognia? Post by: Deej on February 10, 2003, 10:28:07 PM This is an outstanding movie, I first saw it in 1982 or 83 when I was about 7. I'm a huge fan of Peter O'Toole and Errol Flynn, so, as O'Toole is playing an Errol Flynn-like character, it's a double shot. Speaking of good quotes, remember the scene where Swann repells off of the roof using the fire hose, and is dangling below the two gentleman on the balcony:
FIRST GUY: I think Alan Swann is beneath us. SECOND GUY: Of course he's beneath us, he's an actor. ALAN SWANN: Dear fellow, what I choose to do with my schlong is my business. SAUL: How's business? SWANN: Never better. Really a wonderful flick. And Joseph Bologna is still around, he played Adam Sandlers dad in BIG DADDY, and he was on a tv series about 12 years ago, with Matt Lablanc from FRIENDS. Title: Re: MY FAVORITE YEAR. Too bad the Academy has a bias against comedies winning awards.
My favorite lines are: When they're going give him a shower after tying him upright and removing his breakaway suit (designed for just such occasions). Swann, still drunk, thinks he's in one of his movies: Go ahead and lash me, you swine, you'll not loosen my tongue! and Stewardess: Don't you have a watch? Swann: I'm not allowed to wear one. Hilarious performance.

Their names were Verducci, and Matt LaBlanc was Joe's son.

It was reworked in '92 and came out as "Vinnie & Bobbie" w/ LeBlanc, but minus Bologna & Moreno .
And I want to thank Deej for quoting my favorite line from the film: "I think Alan Swam is beneath us," and for pointing out that the character is supposedly based on Errol Flynn. Great cast Peter O' Toole, Lainie Kazan, Joseph Bologna, Bill Macy, and before Perfect Strangers Mark Lynn- Baker.

"Year" is supposed to be based on the Sid Ceasar Show, as was Neil Simon's "Laughter on the 23rd Floor". Sid Ceasar videos are well worth renting -- much surreal insanity that holds up like crazy.
"The Ruling Class" -- not to give anything away, but the 13th Earl of Gurney, O'Toole, is a paranoid schizophrenic who believes he is Jesus Christ. His relatives must render him sane or they get no money from the 12th Earl of Gurney who did himself in during an act of auto-erotic strangulation & is found hanging from his ceiling in a tu-tu and Army frock, holding a sword. The family succeeds to the degree that Jack the Earl of Gurney/Jesus Christ becomes Jack the Ripper. O'Toole has agreed to go for an honorary Oscar this year, even though he wants it known that he's still in the running to win a real one outright. peter j. Title: Re: MY FAVORITE YEAR. It was also directed by Richard Benjamin, and has kinda the same feel. Even though it didn't have a hilarious Peter O'Toole performance, it was filled with great acting and very funny dialogue. check it out.
