I was perusing the Star Wars website called Wookieepedia (basically, a Star Wars version of Wikipedia) and stumbled across something rather interesting. Apparently the Bearded One himself, Mr. George Lucas, recently appeared on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and was, of course, bombarded with Star Wars questions. Now I haven't seen it myself but I've been told that one of the questions put to Lucas was the name of the Imperial officer who Darth Vader choked for not believing in the Force. Although the guy's name is given in the credits as Admiral Motti, he's gone for years without a first name unlike some other Star Wars characters (for example, Peter Cushing's character Grand Moff Tarkin got the first name "Wilhuff" at some point). Whether jokingly or not, Lucas said then and there that Motti's first name would be "Conan" in honor of O'Brien himself.
For the most part, Star Wars fans seem to be taking this revelation pretty seriously. Already Motti's entry on Wookieepedia has been updated to reflect the new first name. If this becomes official, then it means Conan O'Brien will have a Star Wars character named after him, which is neat.
(And, I put this in the movies section rather than the TV one because although Late Night With Conan O'Brien is a television show, the topic, as a whole, pertains more to a movie.)
Some people have to much time on their hands.
Later,
John

Star Wars fans are nutty that way. Just think next time you watch one of the movies, every single character you see in any of the crowd scenes has a detailed backstory. EVERY ONE.

Yeah and if you've ever been "fortunate" enough to have a SW fan sit behind you and reveal every single backstory of every single character during one of the movies, you'll know exactly what it feels like to want to reach around and choke him...

That's pretty much how I feel every time I've ever seen
Monty Python and the Holy Grail in a room full of people who have to recite the entire bloody movie as it's playing.
"Yes, I see you've seen the movie quite a few times. That's neat. Now shut the f**k up."
I like Conan and I think this is cool. And consider this, if Lucas had answered this question on another show, the admiral's first name could have been Dave, Jay or (with the help of a time machine) Arsenio.
I don't know. I kind of like the ring of Oprah Motti.

At the (welcome) risk of being called an iconoclast I don't really give a damn what lucas thinks or does anymore. He's really become an incredibly pompous man after his success at SW and I think that like annikin skywalker was replaced by darth vader so too has the young, energetic, open minded and creative director lucas used to be has been replaced by another cog in the hollywood machine.
