Post by: I luv dolma on February 06, 2004, 01:20:26 AM
C'mon let's form a list of all the movies that have copied the formula of Alien and Aliens and even their sequels.

Carnosaur 2
Godzilla vs. Destroyah
Deep Rising

God you're juvenile.  Can't you be banned or something?

You're just decending further and further into incoherence.

These boards aren't monitered I guess.

"Jurassic Park" & "Minority Report"

Actually, there are several posters with monitor rights and then there is me.  The post that Nights is talking about disappeared about 2 minutes after it was posted.

How about we admit that even Alien is rip off .  It all started with The Thing from Another World.  Small group of isolated people with no way to communicate with the outside world and an alien/freak/mutant running around  killing/eating/maiming/impregnating/infesting them one at a time.

It's a formula that someone manages to put a unique spin on once in a while.

Creature - not too bad, Kinski was cool
Deepstar Six - alien with scuba gear.
I'll post when I can think of a few more

That formula was around a long time before Thing From Another World, or moving pictures for that matter.  Isolation is one of the foremost elements of horror.  You have to pretty much go to Japanese giant monster movies to see the rule broken.

The basis for "Alien" had definitely been done before.  I think that the real point is how Ridley Scott brought all the elements together, in a science fiction film, and showed that it could be a very scary and dynamic story.   It was also a very dark movie, almost Gothic at times.  The creature design helps with the whole Gothic, black, evil, unnatural feel - blame Giger.

This is how I usually react to accusations of 'rip-off'

There are very few new stories, the difference between the 'cheap riip off' and 'good borrower' is simply one of execution

Something else new in Alien - and something that made the movie a whole lot creepier and scarier for me - was that instead of devouring its victims, or biting their neck, or bopping them on the shoulders causing them to fall in a heap, these monsters used humans as breeding vessels.  (*shudders*)

Title: Re: Alien rip-offs...More like: What did ALIEN rip off?

..specifically, the 50's movie IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE is generally credited with being THE specific movie from which ALIEN was inspired.

That's the only point I was making.  Not much is new under the sun , but  Alien scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it.

There was an Italian ripoff [I don't think there's anything wrong in calling it that--Italian filmmakers in the 80s were pretty blatant about it] called ALIEN CONTAMINATION that I want to check out one of these days.

Actually, even that concept wasn't new. The Corman film NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST, 20 years earlier, dealt with an astronaut who had an alien "impregnate" him with eggs.

And let's not forget Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires as another film that ALIEN "borrowed" ideas from.
