Isolation is one of the foremost elements of horror. You have to pretty much go to Japanese giant monster movies to see the rule broken.

I think that the real point is how Ridley Scott brought all the elements together, in a science fiction film, and showed that it could be a very scary and dynamic story. It was also a very dark movie, almost Gothic at times. The creature design helps with the whole Gothic, black, evil, unnatural feel - blame Giger.
