Title: Opinions on Scre4m
Post by: KYGOTC on April 27, 2011, 09:11:04 AM
Finnaly got around to seeing Scream 4 last night. Here's my 2 cents:

SPOILER!!

The movie was over all really good, I thought. Teh only 2 things I didn't like was how useless 2 of the charecters (the new female journalist and Sid's cousins' ex-boyfriend) were. It was just way to obvious that they were there ust to get killed or be suspects.

And the ending was really good, but it was alot like the ending of the 3rd, in a sence that in the third one, the killer was a relative of Sidneys that was starved for attention. But other than that, it was great. It's a great movie for a nerd of the genre, as it both lampoons and celebrates the slasher and horror genre as a whole.

Reboots usualy suck, but this one pulled it off. Hopefullyit sold well enough to make the 5th and 6th ones like Craven has planed.

Your thoughts?

Overall, I had a good time with it.  The Scream series has never been a favorite of mine (although they have their moments, especially the first one), but I still enjoy them when I just take them as cheesy slashers (which I love).

SPOILER ALERT:

*  I enjoyed the opening set of fakeouts.  The first one didn't surprise me, but I have to admit that they caught me off guard with the second one.  I laughed.

*  I felt like they set up some intersting plot possibilities with the 24/7 video blogger and just the whole idea of videoing all of the murders, but they didn't really follow through with it too well.  I was excited to see how it would play out, but instead, it just kinda wimpered out.

*  The comedic jabs at the genre were the funniest, in my opinion, since the first movie.  They stuck it to reboots and torture porn a time or two.  Both of those need a good stickin' to...

*  I haven't seen the originals in years (not since they were each in the theater), so I'm going off memory, but it seems like this one had a much higher body count than the previous entries - especially when you consider that although the first two sets were fakes, they were still on-screen slashes.  Again, I could be wrong about this though.

*  I admit that I didn't guess the ending (I was convinced that Hayden Panetierre or the mom were in on it), so that worked out for me.  Then again, I try not to put too much energy into guessing who the killer is in movies like this - I just enjoy the surprise.

Overall, not a classic by any stretch of the imagination, but not a horrible way to kill an hour and 45 or so either.

I didn't think it was as funny or as scary as the previous ones, but I still felt it was a pretty good movie.

I LOVED the opening fakeouts and was wondering how long they were going to keep doing them.

The motive for the killer wasn't too bad either, and they did catch me by suprise as to who it was going to be.

*mild spoilers here*

I thought the killer was going to be the suspicious ex-boyfriend.  I figured he was the most obvious suspect and since people watching would assume the most obvious suspect WASN'T the real guy that they would go with it to keep people guessing.

I did like the jabs at the torture porn stuff.  Those were nice.

I thought the motive was stupid, because it was too similar to the killer's motive in the 3rd movie. The dude in the 3rd was p**sed because Sidney got all the love and attention while he was cast aside and ignored. In the 4th, it's basicly the same thing, only it's he cousin and not her long lost brother. However, I feel that it was done better in the 4th, because they explained it better, and streched out the ending and made it more interesting. In the 3rd, they just cram all of the information in a quick 5 minutes or so, and that's it. It was really cool how they had that false ending in the 4th, and then followed it up with the hospital scene.

And the opening kills were awesome. The first one, I kinda called in my head, but the second one made me jump. Awesome.

Perhaps motive was the wrong choice of worlds.

Basically what I'm meaning to say here is that I liked the fact that she was a killer just because she was more of less a youtube cam-whore, the lethal version of all those people that post videos screaming "hey!  Look at me!  I'm talentless and doing something stupid!  hey!  Watch!"

I didn't even think about it that way.
That makes deffinatly makes it more interesting. Kudos!

Alot of people that DIDN'T like it say that it wasn't scary enough. To that, I have this to say:
The Scream movies, while catogorized in the horror genre of movies, is more of a series of movies that is not so much meant to SCARE you, but is more of a series of movies that seems to kater (spelling error?) almost exlusivley to the fans of the horror genre. As I was watching it, I just kicked back and had alot of fun . It's full of inside jokes that only horror fans would get, it lampoons all the horror stereotypes, and it name-drops like crazy. The Scrwam movies are movies made for fans of horror, and some of the things that happen in them seem to go over the common movie goer's head.
