Title: 100 Amazing B-Movie Monsters!
Post by: AnubisVonMojo on August 12, 2008, 09:44:22 PM
What with the 100 lists being popular (maybe one day we'll have our own "100 essential b-movie '100 essentials' lists"!), I thought why not do one dedicated to the Amazing monsters of b-moviedom.

Rules: (1) Be sure to NUMBER your entries. It helps to cut down on the confusion, especially for me since I'll be the one sorting out the list. (2) When I say "monsters", I mean it in the literal sense. No human characters, no matter how monstrous or evil they might be. However, supernatural slasher characters who do superhuman things (Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, etc.) are eligible. (3) ONE monster per reply. If you shovel out four or five picks, only the first one listed will count. And now, for the first entrant...

No.1 - Guiron - Most amazing kaiju design EVER, this alien Gamera villain's face is a Ginsu knife and he also shoots giant shuriken out of his face...  :teddyr:

The creature from The Bone Snatcher.  Can't find a descent picture, but it was made of ants that used human skeletons as well, a skeleton.  There was one scene where a guy looks at the thing through his rifle scope and it just looked cool as hell.

10 - The Blob - although I can't decide. The 1988 Blob might be a more amazing monster, but 1958 was the original, classic Blob, and more of a traditional b-movie. Thoughts?

I love all the entries so far folks, great list! Though Jack didn't number his entry, I can't pass up the Bone Snatcher ants, so we're actually up to number 15 now, so..

No.15 - The Brain - Many times have there been killer brain monsters in movies (though not nearly enough for my liking...), and though I was going to nominate Gor as the first for the list, it's the evil '80s killer brain monster that takes the gold medal in my heart.

Also, I enjoyed Jack's suggestion so much that I found the trailer for The Bone Snatcher and took a pair of screen grabs so everybody could see the creatures' coolness for themselves:

18) Beaulah, the Mushroom o' Doom from AIP's "It Conquered the World." One of Paul Blaisdell's more intriguing monster, the squat, clawed vegetable from venus could not only claw people, but spawn bat-stingray monsters that would latch on to people and enslave their minds to do Beaulah's bidding.

28.  King Kong.  It would be a shame if the greatest beast of all got left off just because his movies were "too good."  Hopefully King Kong vs. Godzilla, King Kong Lives,  and the awful 1976 Dino de Laurentiis remake give him the B-movie cred he needs to earn a place on the list.

29 - Leviathan - Yeah, I know the movie was an undersea knock-off of The Thing, but I still like it. And the monster is pretty darned cool. Not sure if it's proper to call him Leviathan, but since he has no other name I'm aware of, it will have to do.

A FUN FACT about IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE:
When Ray "Crash" Corrigan first tried on the monster head his ample chin poked out through the mouth hole. Rather than redo the head they decide it looked kind of creepy and so painted his chin to look like the monster's tongue!

THE MONSTER FROM PIEDRAS BLANCAS - The Creature from the Black Lagoon's uglier, nastier-looking cousin. He eats mangy seagulls, spits seawater, and is also a lot more bloodthirsty - where the poor Creature was happy in his peaceful remote lagoon until the humans barged in, the Piedras Blancas Monster goes looking for trouble and even rips a guy's head off.

Sure...there have been many "A" Dracs...but many "B"s too!

Like Howard Vernon in DRACULA CONTRA FRANKENSTEIN, John Carradine in BILLY the KID vs. DRACULA, Zandor Vorkoff in DRACULA vs. FRANKENSTEIN, Francis Leder in RETURN of DRACULA, and oh so many more!!!

Howard Vernon as Drac...!

# 54. MOTHRA

Not only did this guardian of the Earth appear in her own set of movies but she has long been a favourite supporting character within many a Godzilla movie to boot. Usually accompanied by very tiny singing fairy girls. "Mo-su-ra! Mo-su-ra!"

Though theres a silent film with Emil Jannings called EYES of the MUMMY....the Mummy came to movies in 1932 with Karloff (the Uncanny-as he was billed). It was then franchised into a B-movie series starting with Tom Tyler in The MUMMY'S HAND,and Lon Chaney took over for a trio of Kharis the Mummy movies. Finally...Abbot and Costello ran into his moldy old a$$ in the early '50's...killing off the Universal series. But the Mummy returned thanks to Hammer films with Chris Lee in the title role. Hammer made a few more, a Mummy popped up (among other things)  in ORGY of the DEAD, Expliotation-(VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST), and gore (DAWN of the MUMMY) . Now he's back at Universal again in some billion dollar movie I'll not see, most likely.

The creeepy anemic alien from NOT OF THIS EARTH (the 1957 original not available!!) is bad enough, but his flying blood-sucking octopus is the worst!!!  Why can I not see or own a copy of this movie???     :hatred: Here is a youtube clip including the first few minutes of credits and score for NOT OF THIS EARTH... the middle part of this clip is rudely interrupted by 4-5 minutes of the 1988 "remake"  :hatred: with TRACI LORDS a film apparently forgettable... since I know, I rented it, watched it, and who didn't know who TRACI LORDS was by 1988?  Nonetheless, I have completely forgotten it.  YET, that original 1957 film with its creeepy floating head in a closet, beeping, and later that floating octopus umbrella... Watch the opener of this clip for that fabulous '50s SCIFI CHEEZE we DWEEM about.  After 4 minutes plus of LORDS, this youtube closes with 1957 BEVERLY GARLAND nursing the Alien creeep... (I just speed thru the middle part...)

80. Bigfoot
(aka Sasquatch aka Abominable Snowman aka Yeti)

Bigfoot's film career was spotty at best during the 50's and 60's but he really hit the bigtime during the 70's.

Despite ending the 70's in the glorious Night of the Demon, in which he rips a guy's pecker off and forces girl scouts to stab each other to death, Bigfoot made a radial career change (taking a hint from Godzilla) and became a family-friendly hero in big budget features like Harry and the Hendersons. Perhaps because of this his career hit something of a slump, at least numbers-wise, during the 80's and 90's. During this period he played mostly a ecology-minded lovable shlub who befriends snotty little kids and saves baby raccoons.

But he's recently seen a revival of his blood thirsty ways thanks mainly to The Sci-Fi Channel and independent films like Suburban Sasquatch, whre he continues to rip the arms of campers and bite the heads off blonde starlettes to this day.

Here's a partial filmography:
The Snow Creature (1954)
Ju jin yuki otoko/Beast Man Snow Man (1955)/Half Human: The Story of the Abominable Snowman (1958)
The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas (1957)

*These guys are from a  60's TV series, so they're not "B" movie monsters, but I feel they deserve at least honorable mention because they're definitely amazing. Paula Peterson or Peter Paulson is correct though, they're not "B" movie monsters and shouldn't be counted as such, that makes Rodan #93.

Though the Zanti Misfits are some of the coolest damn monsters in sci-fi history, it's true that they're technically not movie monsters. Although, if anyone wants to start up a "TV Monsters" or "Outer Limits Monsters" list, they should be right at the top. :teddyr:

As for the numbering, sorry folks, but thanks to me not keeping track of my own thread, the numbering's been off for the last 20 or so entries. Turns out I screwed it up somewhere back around the 70s when I made my last nominations. Sorry 'bout that.  :bluesad:

May be a milquetoast way to end compared to some, but I present the titular creature from Project Metalbeast as #100.
If you've seen An American Werewolf in London or the Howling series you'll know that lycans are quite good at killing humans. Metalbeast is no exception, except this werewolf is played by Kane Hodder and, in the latter half of the film is equipped with near-impenetrable steel-skin (And, in one scene, Wolverine claws), making him an even better killer of humans! :teddyr:
