Title: The shutdown
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on January 23, 2019, 01:57:43 PM
If anyone here is suffering as a result of the US gov. shutdown I wish you  the best.

Unlike most people who get laid off, I believe many or most or all federal workers will receive back pay for this time off, so they should be all right.

Contractors working for the fedgov won't.

Eventually; the problem is what to do now, especially for folk who are required to keep working, like the TSA.

You can't eat back pay, though. They'll ultimately be made whole, but they'll have to rely on savings, supplementary income or charity in the meantime.

This is truth.

The shutdown is shameful.

I did see some heartening stories about charities and companies supporting the Coast Guard.

I tend to be very Libertarian, so please take that into consideration.  I do feel bad for those who are without income, especially those that are considered "non-essential" yet required to work like the TSA and military.  Personally I feel like if you are required to work, then you should be paid.  It should be those on capital hill that go without pay (hell, they CAN afford it), and they shouldn't get that back pay when the government does reopen.  If a government shutdown effects this many people we should rethink the size of the government.

I am honestly disgusted with BOTH sides in this mess.  POTUS started it, but the Dems are grandstanding for all they are worth.
TALK TO EACH OTHER AND SETTLE THIS!!!!

They have, but it's through yelling at each other and not listening to each other.

If I remember, Javakoala works for a government organization so I hope he's doing OK. I also do and I don't know what the hell I would do if my salary wasn't paid.

That is indeed weird. Congress members still recieve their pay, but their staff don't. Seems a bit awkward to me.

Do the people working without pay automatically get their back pay when the government starts back up? Heard from some people they do, and others have said it requires an act of congress to confirm it.

Can anyone shed some light on that?

It required an act of Congress, but it has already been passed.

Indy, you  need to understand that if the big orange baby gets his wall he will pull shutdown after shutdown to get everything he wants.

The right used to call a "tyrant" while he let them stop everything he was elected  to  do,  now they praise the ochre tumor for acting like a dictator.  This time the dems are saying "No". And being attacked by the same people who wanted to stop Obama at every turn.

Long ago the cardinals of the Catholic Church met to decide the next Pope, and the factions were so divided the infighting went on and on for weeks until, tired of it all, angry people escorted the cardinals into a building that had no food, water, or roof, then bolted the door from the outside. The Pope was chosen before nightfall.

Just sayin', y'know...?

Get a loan....

I guess this bitter old pr-ck just doesn't get that most people aren't good buddies with big banks willing to give them big bribes disguised ad low interest loans...

I agree with the people who say it's time to get t rich old white guys out of government, and I'm a white guy. We need a lot less rich old white guys in government and more people in touch with what life it like for most americans today.

Problem with loans is the interest. Even if you can get one, do you really want one?

I suppose most folks have a credit card...which they've already overused, making loans impractical to pay for or impossible to get.

What bank would give you a second loan to pay off your a few months of mortgage payments?

I have a good friend who works for the IRS as a supervisor and while he's not one that's being called back into work to file taxes he and two of his staff have to go into work a few hours a week to take care of some priority items, he's just posted that he's taken out a loan to help him cover his bills during the shutdown.

He's not looking at as a vacation, although he's gotten a few crochet and tatting projects finished for the State Fair, and would much rather be working and earning his money not taking out a loan and paying interest because politicians are using his job and income to take a stand. He's a human being not a bartering chip.

Yeah see,  yiu people and I understand these things. The ROWG who said "get a loan" is so out of touch the majority of Americans he doesn't.

I'm not as versed in political correctness as you Sven, so is "POBG" then an acceptable exercise in stereotyping the opposite demographic?

They also have guns, walls around their houses, take greenhouse gas producing chartered flights and have money sunk overseas; they're just plain folk, you know. It's called "do as we say, not as we do."

Give me good honest sleaze any day over hypocritical posers.

So in touch they just voted down an effort to fund payments for laid off workers?

Those blils included funds for trump's wall.  They refuse to fund the wall.  Trump is not going to become a dictator.  The Democrats will not let him he workers hostage for his wall.  He will not use terrorists tactics to get his way

The wall must die.

I understand the bills as Sven has stated.  Democrats have agreed to a billion+ earmarked as border security but will not be strong armed to build a wall that will always be known as it's wall who though promised to get payment from Mexico now demands 5.7 billion from us taxpayers to build it...!!!

Temporarily reopening. No wall. Trump reserving right to shut down again in 3 weeks if no wall authorized.

A bit of a premature announcement as Ann Coulter could still veto it.

The democrats want a wall too, they just don't want Trump getting credit for it.

As I've been saying, as long as people are starving, chuck & nancy think it makes them look good.

I haven't see any of the doctor evil movies...
The Joker wore purple & announced he was giving away money....
Cobra's uniforms were blue, but their cobra insignia was red.... Think about it.....
