John Carpenter's The Thing is either getting remade or is getting a sequel depending on which rumor you read. According to this SciFi Wire article Ronald D. Moore who developed the new Battlestar Galactica series will be writing the script.

What I'm worried about is the guy producing it is the same guy who did The Fog remake.

I don't know who here is a fan of Peter Jackson's LOTR films, but this will come as bad news to those who are.  Looks like Jackson will not be directing the Hobbit because of his lawsuit against New Line over their questionable accounting practices.

Read the email he wrote to the folks at theonering.net.

This really sucks.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

I can deal with the news about "The Thing."  A good writer and director can keep a bad producer at bay and still create a good film.  And, I can say that the writing for BSG has been good (well, except for the one crazy CO/Maint Chief who fixed Pegasus with a wrench in the middle of a battle).

The real bad news, and you already pointed it out, is that Jackson will not be directing "The Hobbit."  After reading his letter, it sounds like Jackson does not like the normal Hollywood sleaze "rub my back and I'll rub yours."  If New Line was trying to play hardball with him, they just lost to the real fans and the news might even make it to Mr. Ordinary Joe on the street.  You know, I spoke with Mike Jittlov a few times on the phone and I think that what turned him off from making movies was just how sleazy Hollywood is inside.  Peter seems to have a thicker hide, so I imagine he will keep plugging.

A sequel is a dumb idea given the way THE THING ended.  There was no sequel to that ending.  { queue dumb Hollywood contrived sequel plotline development}

If someone wants to remake it, that's their choice.  I sure hope they don't delude themselves and think they can improve upon it, however.  That movie is a masterpiece on so many levels, not the least of which was the creativity of Rob Bottin.

Well, The Thing did have a video game spinoff and the events in it start shortly after the first film ended.
You know what?  The storyline in it actually wasn't bad.
It kind of reminded me of "Aliens".
A team of highly armed rescuers fly in to see what happened, realize that everyone's dead and what happened at the camp.
They find the flying saucer and MacReady's voice recordings...etc, etc...
Then, one by one, the soldiers become taken over by The Thing and the paranoia begins.
They ultimately realize, just like the first group, that the creature must not be allowed to escape Antarctica.

I never played all the way through the game but I can tell you that the story & the gameplay did pull me in.
You were always suspicious if the guy next to you was a Thing or not and you had to do random blood tests to be sure.

If the sequel to The Thing is anything like the story in the video game, count me in.
I'll definitely go see it.

When I read the title of this thread, for just a second I had a horrifying image of a cinematic crossover between the two films mentioned.  :teddyr:

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

The upside of a Thing-Gigli is the fact that the effects department doesn't need to go too crazy on monster effects, since the combination of Affleck and Lopez is terrifying enough already...

The downside is I'd probably love the film just for the premise alone!

I love it, but at some point he douses her with kerosene and sets her ablaze before she can sprout tentacles.  That is going to happen, right?  Please, you have to write that into the script...
