Title: CHALLENGING QUESTIONS
Post by: Allhallowsday on December 18, 2021, 11:05:13 PM
Ask one or relate one asked of you.

Is it important for you to be right?

In my job, it is important as I help clients so the info I give has to be right. If it isn't - like I always said that the movie Dark of The Sun (1968) was made in South Africa and it wasn't - I have to make amends and apologize.

It is important to actually be right... like, will this stock go up? Is that truck about to hit me? Would my girlfriend make a good wife?

It's generally not important to be seen and acknowledged as right... though it is flattering to the ego. But that desire causes a lot of unnecessary conflict.

Yes because people need something to believe in. It is in our DNA. Be it Jim Jones or God, doesn't matter.

Title: Re: CHALLENGING QUESTIONS
Post by: ER on December 19, 2021, 02:33:40 PM
Likely, yes, RC, and there's no way even now to know whether God is a human invention, or whether a common tendency toward belief in God is imprinted in our DNA because God placed it there.

I remember reading a Billy Graham book my neighbor gave me in high school because she thought all Catholics went to Hell and hoped it'd convert me, and Billy Graham described being in Moscow and meeting a Soviet philosopher who was "Minster For Logic And Atheism" and Graham asked him if he could name a single culture in human history that did not believe in God, and Graham said the Soviet said he could not.

I thought that was a broad question and a shallow answer, since I can think of many cultures that may have had notions of higher beings to which they prayed, but which were not exactly "God" as Graham probably defined God.

Oddly though so many seeming polytheistic faiths, even Hinduism, tell you ultimately they pray to one god, just a god that has many forms.

Question: Does an evil act undertaken for higher good always remain an evil act, or does its service of a higher purpose then make it an act of goodness?

I wasn't really thinking about my question in terms of God, but, yeah, good example. If the record is to be trusted then God flooded the planet, killed countless Egyptian children, ordered the Canaanite genocide, the cruelties and slayings in the Book of Job, yet we are told God is absolute good. How can that be reconciled?

I was having a pre-birthday get-together today with my buddy Edie, and she said she kept getting a banner ad for HAVE SEX, GET PAID!

She finally clicked it and it was an offer to become an escort, "with jobs available in any city."

She said, "The ad claimed escorts could make three-hundred dollars a date, and here I been giving it away all the years I been married."

"Yeah," I said, posing a challenging question, "but based on what you've told me about your sex drive, could you afford to live on three-hundred bucks a month?"

You and your partner in a criminal offense are arrested and put in separate cells. The interrogator tells you that if one of you confesses to your crime, that person will get five years in prison, while the one who does not confess will go to prison for twenty years. If you both confess, you each receive ten years, but if neither confesses, you both walk free. What do you do?

Exercise your right to remain silent and ask for a lawyer. The interrogator is lying, he does not have the power to cut a deal like that. (Seriously, the police really will lie and tell you you'll get a better deal if you confess--don't believe them).

The man who was almost my father in law wants to pay for my children's school next semester because:

"Except for my daughter and grandson, you are the person I love most in the world, and my son would have wanted me to look after you."

It's a lot of money, but he's well-off. There are also no strings on the money, and he said no one else even has to know.

See, though..... while mostly I have a great relationship with this person, sometimes I experience moments of consuming anger at him because of the past, as he well knows, yet doesn't seem to hold against me.  (And which he sort of deserves, frankly, though I should be more in control of my feelings and more able to put my claims of forgiveness into action.)

The fact he offers help like this contributes to me feeling guilty about the occasions I get angry at him, which stresses me out, like this one night after Christmas when I was still awake at one AM wondering stream of consciousness style on an open message board if there isn't also an element of making amends in half the stuff this man does for me, because he's big into recovery programs as ongoing relics from his misspent and morally compromised younger days.

Oh wait, that's now.

The challenging question is: should I lie and tell him tuition is more than it is, so I can buy myself something too?

OK, kidding there, but seriously, it's beyond kind of him to want to do this for my girls and I wonder if my pride deserves to stand in the way of a gift this generous?

Truth is I already know I'll take the money, since it's for my daughters and it's a generous gift to them, and I think what really bothers me is.... I'm not bothered.

Make sense? No? Well it's me and so what else is new?

Is it acceptable to crash a stranger's funeral as long as you conduct yourself with approximate decorum and don't stay for free booze at the wake?

Why would you want to crash a funeral? Because where else can you wear a black veil in a church and get stared at for the right reasons?

(Funeral pickups are a thing....)

I know someone whose rabbi says unless Jews forgive Nazis, they are letting Nazis hurt them through their legacy of continued hate. What do you think of that concept?

PS This was the same rabbi who told Jewish parents to tell their children that since Jews stand for justice, fairness, and forgiveness, it was natural for Nazis to hate them, since Nazis stood for the exact opposite things, and as far as explanations go, I always felt a fondness for that one.

I do not think anyone wants to forgive.  It is not easy to forgive.  There is a measure of control in forgiveness which is wisdom.
Some crimes are to me forever unforgivable.  I suspect I would fail.

I can't remember the exact quote, but as Terry Pratchett once said, you can grind the universe down into the finest possible powder and you will never find a single molecule of justice, mercy or pity and yet we act as these as the most important things in existence.

The White Lady of Amherst tells us:

One need not be a Chamber — to be Haunted —
One need not be a House —
The Brain has Corridors — surpassing
Material Place —

Do you think she was right?

Is there a difference in, say, mental illness, and a metaphorical---or literal---haunting of a person? Can someone otherwise sane for all intents and purposes be haunted by the past, or an idea, or a loss? Can a dark energy focus on a person and infuse that person to the point that he or she is as haunted as any structure?

Have you ever done LSD?

No, but I did once agree to be given an IV drug that puts the mind into a state where intensely clear recall becomes possible and lying becomes almost impossible, and in this curiously uninhibited state I suddenly felt my mind was open to truths it normally couldn't consciously access, and in this sudden state of candor and almost overwhelming information I started bursting out the biggest truth I was feeling, which was difficult to explain but I tried to tell the people overseeing this session that the deep secret of life is it's lived in an infinite series of looping, repeating cycles, but I have never been able to accurately articulate this revelation, only describe that the lives we live spawn new cycles of our own lives with and without variation, on and on, apparently forever, action generating variation, choice creating new versions of ourselves, birth, existence, death, rebirth as us again, the same people not new identities, the same or nearly the same lives looping and repeating and creating other pathways but always staying ourselves.

It was like getting run over by a psychic train but it was also like finally being able to tell something I'd really always known, just like everyone knows but doesn't talk about.

Ha, yeah, strange day that.

Given where I work, I'd be surprised if it wasn't subjected to a first strike, so this is actually something I have previously given some thought to. It takes 20 minutes to get from my office to my house walking. I'd run home so I could hold Kristi and Ash. With two narrow roads leading out of town, there is no chance of getting far away enough fast enough to get anywhere safe.

Mom was (and is) always in favor of marijuana as a medicine so she wouldn't mind me getting high with a friend.

If a nuke was heading for your town and you had twenty minutes before it hit, what would you do?

Have I done today's Wordle? If not, then I just have time to complete it and post my results to FB. If I've already done it, then.... speedball, I guess?

If you could, with no danger of retaliation against yourself or your family, end one human life right now, whose would it be?

You're such a nice person that I'd do you a favor and kill you so you could go to Heaven like you deserve. You're welcome, man.

The stupid doctor who put Mom on anti-stroke medication only for her to get one.  :hatred:

My friend, I understand your anger. Tara Sue went a year on chemo, and she died of cancer anyway.
Doctors are not miracle workers. Just people doing their best. I wish the best for your Mother.
It's nobody's fault when someone gets ill. It happens to us all.

Have you ever yelled at somebody who you thought was staring at you?
