Title: School of the Holy Beast (1973)
Post by: lester1/2jr on September 17, 2007, 08:45:45 AM
I wasn't that in to this.  It was very good on some level.  The director is certainly not afraid of christian taboos the way western filmmakers are, not hugely impressive considering Japans long history of persecuting Christians.  There is plenty of violence , lesbianism, whippings, etc  The production is excellent, even if it does have the full on letterbox thing I am not partial too, the acting is solid as well but again  it  didn't really grab me for some reason.  Elements of it have a light saracastic tone that doesn't really fit with the rest of the movie and the plot though logical is not given all that much prominence until the very end.  It's essentially a soft core porn movie with  "shocking" anti christian overtones that aren't all that shocking considering the source.  It's entertaining though and contains some good ideas and evilness.

I still stand by my reaction of last year.

I saw the movie in the theatre (Brussels Festival), so no format problems there. As for letterboxes in general, I am a stickler for composition, so I like to see the entire image, even if it is a bit smaller.
