Title: Incredible book on the Marine Corps.
Post by: Trevor on February 05, 2008, 01:45:50 AM
I was at a book and antique fair on Sunday last and there was this enormous volume detailing the entire history of the Marine Corps for sale, bound in camouflage and presented by the Corps itself.

A truly incredible volume ~ I think it runs to nearly 700 pages ~ and while I've done much research in my life, I can just imagine the amount of research and planning that went into this. Not to forget that it is very heavy, too.

The seller noticed my interest in the book and the conversation went thus:

Seller: "Do you have an interest in things military?"
Me: "Yes, my Dad was a soldier and I lived through a war, so yes."
Seller: "So why that volume on the Marine Corps?"
Me: "I have a friend who is a Sergeant in the Marine Corps."
Seller: "Really?"
Me: "Yes."
Seller: [looks at me strangely] "Oh, OK."

:teddyr: Great volume: I just wish that I could have afforded it.

Was it Moskin's "The U.S. Marine Corps Story?"  Just wondering, in case there is a good one I have missed.

Sergeant?  My friend, I am a Staff Sergeant.  It ends up being a major difference between us Marines, though I've seen other branches and other nations that used a blanket "Sergeant."  Also, and I haven't said anything about it before this, but I was selected for Gunnery Sergeant by the last promotion board at HQMC.  Waiting on the authority now, but my promotion date should be 1 March.

Hi Andrew.

I never saw any mention of an author ~ all it said was that the book itself was presented by the Corps, but it might be the Moskin book. Very comprehensive, very well researched and put together, but also heavy. Very expensive too, it cost 500 South African rand which is about $50 US, if the price were a little lower, I would have most certainly bought it.

Congratulations, Gunny!

Congratulations, Andrew! I had to look up all the titles, since you can be sure I don't know the difference, but I see that at least raises you a pay grade.

So... At what pay grade do they start letting you in on the UFO's and underground conspiracies?

I think all of that is handled by the Army and Air Force.  We just get called in when they need people to yell, "Sir, yes sir!" and "Go, go go!"
