Title: BRILLIANT TV COMMERCIALS
Post by: Allhallowsday on March 27, 2009, 09:52:16 PM
Doggett's thread about SELLOUTS inspired this idea, what do you think were brilliant TV advertisements?  Do you have any fond favorites?  This one is for SALEM cigarettes.  The jingle is planted in your mind, and then they oh so smartly don't finish it at the very end - which the viewer is sure to do in his or her head; one of TV's most memorable examples of subliminal advertising:

Couldn't find my favorite TV ad - the very old Benson & Hedges ad with the wordless jingle demonstrating the disadvantages of smoking the longer cigarette (can you believe they showed a person smoking in an elevator with the doors closing on the tip?)

There is a couple of Coca Cola commercials that stand out in my memory. The first was the one with Mean Joe Green.

The second is the famous Coke Mountain Top commercial where a bunch of young people of the day gathered to sing on top of a mountain in Italy.

I have found memories of both from when I was a kid.

I've always found the Geico Cavemen comercials a brilliant parody of political correctness.  Too bad they overdid it.

I'll never forget the "Mean Joe Green" commercial!!!!

I also remember a beer commercial - I think it was Bud Light or Miller Light - that had a bunch of cowboys singing "Adios Amigos" to an empty bottle on the table - I laughed SO hard at that one, but I haven't been able to find it on YouTube.

Another commercial that I recall is the Apple "1984" commercial. While I have never owned an Apple computer in my life I still foud it to be a cool commercial of the day.

I'd bet most of you are too young to remember this one (the actor, of course, is the late great JACK GILFORD that youngin's might remember from COCOON):

I don't think I have seen a Guinness commercial that could not be described as "brilliant"

I just ordered a DVD called DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL.  It contains classic TV coimmercials from the past.  Sort of like IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD, but with commercials instead of movies.  I can't wait for it to arrive . . . I think it was a pre-order and has not been released yet.

I couldn't call this extactly brilliant, but one thing is for sure.  It will catch your attention and you will be watching the commerical from beginning to end.  Whether or not the reason you are watching the commerical is the purpose of the adveristing agency, it is just catches you.  Anyways, whose up for some Burger King?

Love this commercial, but still hate Sponge Bob.
