Title: OK, guys . . . I finally saw VALKYRIE
Post by: indianasmith on May 24, 2009, 09:19:24 PM
and you were all right in your earlier comments.  I wanted to like this movie so badly, because Col. von Stauffenberg is a great hero of mine.  My movie standards are not as high as some of yours, so I figured y'all were being overly picky.  The film   did have some moments - the sets were very authentic and the cinematography beautiful . . . .

but what a letdown it was overall!  Kenneth Branagh did the only decent acting job in the whole thing.  Tom Cruise was simply wooden, and none of the rest of the cast picked up his slack.  The actor who played Hitler was utterly unconvincing, and none of the top Nazis - Goebbels, Goering, and Himmler - were given any chance to become a part of the story.  I was particularly disappointed at the milquetoast depiction of the fiery propagandist Goebbels.  And the whole thing dragged way too much.  Too many scenes of uniformed Nazis and Wehrmacht running down streets and corridors, too many long, meaningful glances without dialog.

The made for TV film, THE PLOT TO KILL HITLER, is much, much better.  I guess I should have listened to you guys.

I'll pass on two hours of Brad Pitt saying "NAT-ZEES".

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS is one of the few upcoming movies I'm looking forward to.

So am I, but I HOPE TO GOD Quentin can keep his "wink wink nudge nudge" film references to a minimum. But the fact Brad Pitt tells us his character's name is Aldo Ray tells me I'm gonna hate myself for watching it.
