I remember renting a VHS cassette, probably in the '80s or early 90's (I don't have a clue) with a story that I think basically was as follows (unfortunately it could be that I made some things up between the years that I watched it and writing this today...) : - I think a couple had engine trouble with their car (not sure if I remember that part correctly) and somehow get in a nearby mysterious house that was apparently nearby. - I think some spooky things happened in the house, really can't think of any detail after all those years sadly. In any case, he got separated from the girl and I think they lost each other. - The male is scared to death near the end of the movie and finds himself an axe. He runs to what appears to be a ghost(? or at least scary creature) with the axe and while he is running to the scary character, it is revealed that from a different cameraposition, that it is not a ghost at all, but the girl from the beginning (I think I remember wearing a wedding dress but the other half of her clothes the costume of the ghost).. it was a surprise party. She slowly turns and the guy is too late to be able to stop and accidentally kills his soon-to-be-wife with the axe in horror. I think there the movie ended. Does this ring a bell? As it's so long ago I really don't know how accurate this info is sadly. Neither one remotely matches your entire description though.

I have seen both House (can't remember much from it though) and Evil Dead series, good suggestions. Also nice to see Tales from the Crpyt mentioned, I do not know the episode though.
