Title: Futures that have Passed
Post by: chainsaw midget on February 20, 2024, 09:28:33 PM
According to Terminator 2, Judgement Day was supposed to happen in 1997.  Later sequels and spin-offs would push it back to 2003, 2004, 2011, and 2017.  We managed to avoid a lot of Judgement Days so far.

Back to the Future 2 showed us we were supposed to have flying cars and hover boards in 2015.

Star Trek told us there was going to be Eugenics Wars (that conflict that Khan was created for) sometime between 1992 and 1996.

So, what other futures from movies are now in our past?

The Running Man starts with a text card which reads:
"By 2017 the world economy has collapsed. Food, natural resources, and oil are in short supply. A police state, divided into paramilitary zones, rules with an iron hand."

The Batman Beyond cartoon series is set in the dystopian Gotham City of 2019.

JUST IMAGINE (1930) is set in 1980, and had us flying in one man individual planes and flying to Mars.
And Mars has some crazy styles!

I don't think BLADE RUNNER 2049 does.

FARENHIET 451  (1966) , where books are banned and burned, takes place in 2022. And now certain parts of the Republican party are practicing that very thing!

Not quite on-topic, but one of the funnier Futurama episodes involved a sub-plot where it was mentioned that Star Trek couldn't give the people in New New York hope for the future, because it was set 800 years in the past.

Class of 1999 came out in 1990.
Then it's sequel class of 1999 II came out in 1994.  (Although they do say in the movie that two years have passed so it's 2001.  They just didn't retitle the movie.)

It always gets me that the original X-men movie was set "in the near future" while it's sequels were in the present.

I guess that near future" really was near.
