Title: Hollywood idiots
Post by: Jayson on March 01, 2004, 09:31:33 PM
Is it just me, or do you find yourself downright avoiding any movies that the hollywood idiots (I.E. protesting the war) have or are in? I absolutely will not watch
any movies with Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, Susan Saran-wrap, George Loony, Ed Asner(assanine). And especially Jeneen Garafalo. Is anyone out there doing something similar?

Generally, they're in movies I don't want to watch anyhow.  I will still watch Bull Durham, though.  (And I own Barbarella on DVD.)

Unless they're rabid anti-smokers or they advocate the eating of children, I really don't care much about an actors politics. I can't see depriving myself of something
I enjoy, just because the people in the movie vote differently than I do. If I dislike their acting ability, then I'll avoid their films.

Where I live.
Everyone is free to have their own opinion.
Everyone is free to not listen to others opinions.
As long as no one gets hurt it isn't worth spreading hate over.
If the movie is good I'll watch it.

However, that said I really don't like Susan Sarrandon or Tim Robins much anymore.
Hell, but I don't like Bush much either. This is becuase they all come accross as big headed not because of their political views.

I think avoiding films because you don't like the actors' politics is a choice for everyone to make on their own.  Personally, while I don't happen to agree with Tim Robbins or Baghdad Sean on much, they are brilliant actors and they generally choose good scripts (okay, "I Am Sam" excepted).  There's really nothing on this earth that means much less than an entertainer's take on politics (unless that entertainer actually throws his hat in the ring and gets elected to something).

I am also told that Toby Keith shares my views on the war on terror.  That's teriffic.  You'd still have to lash me down with titanium chains to get me to stay in the room when his music is playing.

Eh...I agree with the person who said that they tend not to watch those kinds of movies anyway.   I'll probably check out Mystic River when it comes out on video since I like the writer who wrote the book on which it was based.  To not watch a movie that I would like just because I don't like the politics of one of the people involved is ridiculous.

Obviously someone's been listening to Michael Savage.  It's funny when people pepper their messages with someone else's catchphrases.   I counted at least three....I haven't listened to Savage in a while so there might be more.

Actually..i listen to the Savage Nation every day. The title of the thread is also a Mike Savage catchphrase. It seems to fit somehow.

I don't believe that politics should influence which actors/actresses you will watch.  If they are good, watch them.  Don't mix their personal life with business.

I thought America was a Democracy?  You can have your own opinion, but keep it to youself...cause I dont know you and I dont care what you think.  It's the same with Hollywood actors, only fools would follow.  Are we a Nation of fools?  We should learn to mind our own business and let people deal with their own problems and we deal with ours.

I tend to boycott Hollywood in general, based on the fact that they make nothing but crap.  Not so much a boycott as just common sense :)

Actors aren't anymore educated about political subjects any more than the general population, so anyone that listens to them is an idiot.  That aside, we live in a free country and anyone can have an opinion and express it. It's not going to stop me from watching a movie I'm interested in because of some actors opinion on foreign affairs.

The only thing I support about the war is the troops. We're there and we need to finish what we started and at least leave those folks with a decent chance at a democracy. The rest is moot point now.

An actor can be a Satanic Neo Nazi for all I care. And this thread is really freakin old!

I agree with Trek.  Watch "Celebrity Jeopardy" and tell me famous folks are smarter than the rest of us.  That goes for  the whole political spectrum, left right center.   I care  nothing about actors except how they act in their movies.
I support our friends and family in the military, they deserve money, healthcare and support like any working protector (cop, fireman, paramedic as well).  However I want the mess roughly fixed and them home safe.

I'll accept a famous actor as an expert in certain areas of film, television or stage, but I'll never understand where their political credentials come from. I'd put as much stock in a celebrity's take on politics as I would in a politician's take on the movie business (unless it's Arnold).

The problem is not so much the actors as the large segment of the public who worship the rich and famous. Fame and fortune do not necessarily mean one is wise or admirable. Seems like the opposite is true most of the time. I get annoyed when celebrities arrogantly push their politics, but I mostly blame the people who encourage it - the media who rush to report it as though it's important, the star-struck idiots who talk about it like it's important, and even the political groups who try like hell to get high-profile spokesmen. They're all to blame.

Oh, for the days when Hollywood stars kept their personal lives and beliefs hidden behind a classy cultivated image.

I share Jayson's frustration over Hollywood's left-lib bias, but I try not to let it affect my appreciation for an actor's performance in any given film.  I find this harder to do, though, the more overtly political the film is.   Objectivity of this sort is difficult, if not impossible, to maintain when art turns to propoganda, as in the case of Michael Moore's "documentary" films.
