All I've got to say is there are too many moments from Poltergeist. Didn't think it was that scary.

That is a good bunch of films. A few months ago POLTERGEIST was on TV and was impressed by how good this film is. Saw it many times in the mid-80's as I thought it was over played on pay TV. It was neat to see part of it again.

The Exorcist needed more scenes to that list, currently that's the one movie that still scares me.

And from the "Thing" the crawling head wasn't that scary, creepy but not scary. If there was anything that was scary from that movie it was the entire kennel scene.

And I don't remember being scared by the Dumbo scene.

I had no idea that Giger (http://www.hrgiger.com/) designed the big worm that Craig T. Nelson pukes out in Poltergeist 2.
I haven't seen that film in years...I might have to rent it soon.

I'll always remember it for the scene when Robbie's braces start to behave with a mind of their own.
I had braces myself at the time.

I do agree about the clown scene in Poltergeist.
I've had numerous people tell me that they have hated clowns their entire lives because they were so traumatized by that scene.

The Crying Game?  C'mon, the punchline was kinda wierd and had some 'shock' value, but was NOT scary.

Glad to see Boris and Lon made the list for some true classics.

The fact that WILLY WONKA is #19 causes this entire list end up in the toilet.

Now that water tunnel scene was plenty scary to me as a kid.

If it must be on the list then it should be #100.

But I fully support "THE ROOM" scene from Texas Chainsaw Massecre.

To me, anyway, these kinds of lists are entirely subjective, and of course they change over time for each person.

     Yeah, I agree with the "subjectivity" crtique and do think that the inclusion of Crying Game is a bit bizarre --
     However, I give the guy points for including many old and some silent pictures -- I really hate to think that someday silent film and older film will be unwatched/unknown.  And, yes, I did read the other thread on that topic --
     The "enter, my Lord" scene from The Innocents(1962) should creep out anyone who has a pulse & isn't on the list here --
     "Suspuria" bored me.  Still does.  Lord knows, I gave it the old college try, but I still find it too stylized & methodical, without any real scares . . . See how subjective it all gets?
     Yay!  A BIG yay, for the inclusion of "Night of The Hunter" on any list anywhere for any reason.  To me, the Shelly Winters scene is lovely, but isn't as creepy as the "journey on the river" sequence, or any of the numerous scenes wherein Robert Mitchum questions the children -- Really, anything at all that will get more people to dig out "Night . . ." & watch it is aces in my book.  This movie is scary as hell on different levels.  I showed it to a friend of mine recently who is much more up on Zombie films & slasher films/gore, etc, than I am, & it creeped him right out.

'It's a story of Love and Hate' [I love that scene, and the nod Spike Lee gives to it in "Do the Right Thing'']

I was watching Dead Man a few days ago, and realised that Robert Mitchum is in it as well, in a great scene involving a big big gun.  Fun movie.

That halloween scene with him Mike Myers dressed as a ghost did give me the creeps.  The shinning messed me up when I saw it at the age of  8.  "Come and play with us"  eeek.  I feel there are some things missing though.  I think the ones that scare me the most is when kids are invloved.  No one believes the kids, and it's like you are taken back to those times when monsters were in the closet and you SWORE you saw something lurking in the shadows.  That moment in the sixth Sense when the kid was trying to take a p**s alone...I was scared, and that girl puking in the tent, made me jumo...I admit it.  For the most part the usual slasher films and gore and all that doesn't scare me.

Suspense does.  Creepy suspense with anticipation.  I like it.

I didn't notice earlier that they had the "Squeal" scene from "Deliverance". I watched that about two months ago. I wouldn't call it flat out scary at first, however it was very uncomfortable to watch, and the more I thought about it the scarier it became since it was realistic. Much more likely to happen than being attacked by a killer clown doll under the bed, or running into a shape shifting alien.

When I was 5 years old, I couldn't watch "Dumbo" because of that damn scene with the elephants.

I grew terrified of the movie, and I really hated my sadistic parents who made me watch just because it was a Disney movie.

I actually liked that movie when I was a kid because Didi Conn did the voice of Raggedy Ann.

I also hear "Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue" is very scary for young kids. Is it true?

I saw the first Poltergeist in the theater with a friend of mine...I think we were in 9th grade or so...YOU may not think that movie is scary, I DON'T think that movie is scary but this kid...he screamed, and I mean screamed, like a b***h through most of the "horror" scenes. He was leaning forward with his head down and at one point, he was so scared he threw up...Yeah, I'd say that probably had some sort of lasting effect on him. Ah...the good old days...

I certainly agree with everyone who says these lists are subjective. Of all the scenes listed, I have seen 41 of them, and unlike some lists, where I might find one or two of the  scenes scary, I never found any of the scenes listed scary. Not even if I found a couple of the films scary (i.e. "Freaks" and "Blair Witch Project.")  Still, it is interesting to see what other people find scary, even if you don't.

Wow, he got that freaked out by it?  I saw that movie on beta as a kid...had to have been first or secong grade (I was born in feb of 76) and I LOVED it. I was obessessed to the point I knew it word for word.  for a long time I wanted to be a Paranormal Psychologist because of that movie.  I would say at that age the only part that bothered be was the magots coming out of the steak...the guy tearing off his face was a little gross, but the steak...man I didn't eat steak for months after that! haha.

Oh no, I was responding to Odinn7's message about Poltergeist and how his friend freaked out and even puked at one point when he watched it (they were in 9th grade!)  I guess I was exposed to such movies so young that it just doesn't really phase me much?

And Yes, Loyal1, it was unreal. I found out later on after jabbing the s**t out of him over his terror, this was the first horror movie he had seen. I bet it was also the last.

By the way Odinn 7, I am not a he, but a she.  For some reason many seem to make that mistake.  But then I have been told I am a "guys girl", but not really a tom boy or anything.

Please accept my apologies. It's kind of hard to tell with a name like "loyal1" as it could fit either way.  My mistake for just assuming.

No problem...it isn't so bad being mistaking for a guy online.  If it was in person, well then I might have a slight problem with that one! :)

Let's see ...

The Shining - NOT SCARY.  At all.  Not in the slightest.
The Exorcist - not scary
Poltergeist - actually did scare the s**t out of me when I was a wee tot.  I only remember the thing in the closet, though, and the close-up on Craig Nelson's mouth when he screamed.  A pretty genuine reaction, I thought.
The Crying Game - Who could ever have found that scary? (???)
The Thing - the kennel scene is, far and away, scarier than the head crab.
Psycho - the shower scene was good, and deserving of its place in pop culture history, but certainly not the #1 scary scene of all time.  The rest of the movie was pretty much blah.
Akira - WTF???
Alien - Ripley discovering the Alien on the escape shuttle was the scariest thing in that movie.  I might have put the chest burster in the list but much further down.

That's all I can think of right now.  Interesting study in what other people think is scary.

I agree with you on the kennel scene from the thing, and also the whole Physco thing, but I disagree with you on the Exorcist.

Like people have said, everyone's list is similar and or different.

Believe it or not, I saw the Exorcist when I was little, around five, and it didn't scare me one bit.  Years later, when I was 19 or 20, I thought that maybe I just didn't understand it enough at that age to be frightened of it.  So, I watched it again and, nope, not scary.  For one thing, I think it goes too far.  Come on, now ... she pukes chunks of crap that wiggle like frogs' legs!  That's not scary, that's funny!  The makeup looked like lime jellow slimed on her face!  The crucifix masturbation/self abuse thing was pure exploitation on the level of a naughty nun flick.  And the crabwalk ... my friend Daniel could crabwalk *just* like that.  He used to do it and say, "Look at me, I'm Linda Blair!"

I dunno, it just never worked on me.  One of the main reasons may be that I don't have, don't want, and plain don't like children.  (Whether they realize it or not, I think a lot of the horror people get from this movie is that the *director* - rather than the devil - did all that to a little kid.)  Secondly, the depiction of Satan (or Pazuzu, or whatever) the movie puts forth is a real wuss.  The extent of his powers seems to be making kids turn green and throw up -- hell, they do that on their own!  (Yeah, yeah, he can toss stuff around the room, too.)

Poltergeist, on the other hand, played right into my fears as a small child.  Scary trees outside the window ... scary things under the bed ... a monster in the closet ... not being safe in your own house ...

I haven't seen it in twenty or more years and I doubt it would scare me at all today.  Hey!  I ought to watch them both on a double bill!
