Title: Gojira! DVD! Gasp!
Post by: Vermin Boy on March 28, 2006, 08:39:07 AM
I'm not sure if you guys have heard about this yet, but check out the top story at dvddrive-in.com:

"Here’s the scoop on the upcoming Godzilla DVDs from Classic Media! You may have already heard that they plan to release a 2-disc set of the original 1954 GOJIRA with the 1956 American version, GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS on September 5th with a SRP of $21.98. But on the same day, the company will also unleash a multi-disc set (6 or 7 discs, depending on the amount of gathered extras) which will include GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN, GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA, GHIDRAH THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER, GODZILLA VS. MONSTER ZERO, GODZILLA’S REVENGE and TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA. The set will include the American versions, as well as the original Japanese versions with English subtitles, and all titles will be remastered in anamorphic widescreen (except in the case of the original film and RAIDS AGAIN which will be full frame), and are promised to look pristine. There will be number of special features, including commentaries with Terry Morse Jr. (son of Terry Morse who wrote, directed and edited KING OF THE MONSTERS) and Patricia Saperstein (daughter of Henry Saperstein, head of UPA). The multi disc set has a SRP of $69.98. Classic Media assures us that the films will look spectacular and that these releases will satisfy even the most diehard Zilla fans! More information will follow, but a website (www.godzillaondvd.com) has been set up by them and will be updated on a regular basis."

I don't think I really need to say much here-- Subtitled Godzilla on American DVDs pretty much speaks for itself. I know what I'm asking for when my birthday rolls around...

I read the title of this thread without my glasses, and I thought it said "Gigli DVD!" I was beginning to think enough's enough. But Gojira is a different story.

Y'know, although I was a little disappointed with Classic Media's previous Godzilla set- which was basically old american edited versions of most of the aforementioned ones, plus Rodan and minus Raids Again- I felt certain Sony would eventually follow it up with something far superior. I now feel that shall soon be forthcoming. I look forward to seeing the original Gojira, the b&w sequel on DVD, and also seeing Terror of Mechgodzilla in widescreen (and hopefully, in uneditied form). It's a good time to be a G fan.

Now this sounds good! I want to see those movies in widescreen so bad! And I'm glad they're putting both the Japanese and American version done. I'm getting the version I grew up with as well as the 'how it originally was" version.

Great stuff!

Now THATS Entertainment!
I want a pro Toho film set SO bad, and here they do it!
See, buying the dvds of the 90's stuff paid off, as they see there is a market for it.
( does the happy dance.)

Right... finally I have justification for that god-awful Spacegodzilla/Destroyah (? Desutoroyah? Destoyota? What the hell name is it?) double feature dvd... right next to my Gamera vs Monster X/Monsters from a Prehistoric Planet double feature. This is at least a step up :)

This could be really amazing.  The proof will be in the discs when they come out.  If the quality is good, what a treat!  I have said for a long time that my perfect DVD set would be one of every Godzilla movie.  Original aspect ratio, restored, but with the Japanese version on one side and the American on the other.

I'll be looking forward to September.
