Title: They All Did Westerns....................
Post by: Scott on April 12, 2006, 08:41:32 PM
Most of the stars from the 50's,60's,and 70's did Westerns. Today they don't. In fact they don't make many Westerns. What are todays actors who would be good in their first Western?

John Travolta

Can't think of anyone else. Travolta could do a great Western if he ever recieved a role for one.

Johnny Depp did an awsome Western called DEAD MAN in the 90's. If you haven't seen Johnny Depp in DEAD MAN the go find it tonight. One of the strangest Westerns ever.

Also a little trivia question which one of these people never did a Western?.

Marlon Brando
James Dean
Orson Welles
Dennis Hopper
Jack Nicholson
Jack Palance
John Agar
Abbott and Costello
John Wayne
Ed Wood
Micheal Caine
Edward G. Robinson
Sammy Davis Jr.
Humphrey Bogart
Lief Garrett
Arch Hall Jr.
Christopher Lee
Sean Connery
Telly Savalas
Lon Chaney Jr.

Off the top of my head and not consulting the IMDB:

Marlon Brando -One Eyed Jacks, Missouri Breaks
James Dean -? (Giant was kind of a western)
Orson Welles -?
Dennis Hopper -Gunfight at the OK Corral, Sons' of Kattie Elder
Jack Nicholson-The Shooting, Missouri Breaks
Jack Palance -Shane (And the Italian ones with Franco Nero and Tomas Milan)
John Agar -She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache, Chisum.
Abbott and Costello -?
John Wayne -He made a few notable ones IIRC. :)
Ed Wood -? (You would have thought the Terror of Tiny Town)
Micheal Caine -?
Edward G. Robinson-McKinna's Gold. [sp.]
Sammy Davis Jr. -Sgts Three?
Humphrey Bogart -I recall him in a singing one.
Lief Garrett -He did and I am stil trying to forget it.
Arch Hall Jr. -?
Christopher Lee -?
Sean Connery -Shalako (Without a doubt the best Bridget Bardot Honor Blackman western ever!)
Telly Savalas -McKinna's Gold
Lon Chaney Jr. -

Thanks for narrowing the list down, Herodotus.

If narration counts, then Orson Welles was the uncredited narrator for "Duel in the Sun."

If comedic westerns count, then Abbott and Costello did "The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap."

If playing a Mexican bandit counts, then Humphrey Bogart played one in "Virginia City." He was also the villain in James Cagney's "Oklahoma Kid."

If British westerns count, then Christopher Lee was in "Hannie Caulder" w/ Raquel Welch and Robert Culp.

If being in a western I've never seen counts, then Arch Hall, jr. was in "Deadwood '76."

If shorts count, then Ed Wood, jr. did "Crossroads of Laredo," some 17 years after he died. He was also the wrtier and director for that one.

And if you look at Lon Chaney, jr.'s credits, he has actually done more westerns than horror films.

That leaves only Michael Caine who has never done a western. But there is always hope.

Herodotus (Greek Historian known as the Father of History and now Film Historian here at Badmovies.org) and BoyScoutKevin did well, but BoyScoutKevin pulls ahead with a win.

Micheal Caine hasn't to my knowledge acted or directed a western. BoyScoutKevin is the winner ! ! ! .....................hip hip hurray..............

I own a copy of DEADWOOD 76 and it was shot in the Badlands of South Dakota.

Orson Welles is in the Spaghetti Western TEPEPA. (I'm still trying to find this one, it's suppose to be good)

CROSSROAD AVENGER: The Adventures of the Tucson Kid was Ed Woods only TV production. 25 minutes in length.

Humphrey Bogart did TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE.

The time has come to concede the contest to BoyScoutKevin. As for me in the wake of my defeat I plan to watch the Uwe Boll filmography and wonder where it all went wrong. ;)

Ya know....ZULU takes place in close to the western period...it just has African Warriors , rather then American Indians. Caine's first starring role, i think.

Worry not Herodotus, you did splendid. All in good fun.

I was thinking about Zulu Flangepart, but thought it wasn't close enough. I must admit that was definately a frontier film. I might even have to send this topic into overtime. Flangepart is on the mark with this.

Vincent Price also did one in South Africa about the same time period. It even looks like a Western. The name of the film is THE JACKALS.

William Castle even directed a Western or two also.

'Dead Man' is so awesome. And not just because of Johnny Depp.

Michael Wincott is in it. He is probably my favorite actor under 50.

As is Lance Henriksen. It's so great to see him in a such a good movie.

It's one of Robert Mitchum's last movies. (He has a very small part.)

I really dig the music by Neil Young.

I think Ben Affleck would be a good western hero.  They could make a series of movies like they did with a lot of spaghetti westerns (Sabata, Trinity, etc.)  I can imagine it now:

* GIGLI: U.S. MARSHAL
* THE RETURN OF A MAN CALLED GIGLI
* GIGLI RIDES!
* GIGLI AND THE SUNDANCE KID
* THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY GIGLI
* VIVA GIGLI!
* THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND GIGLI
* THE OUTLAW JOSEY GIGLI
* A FISTFUL OF GIGLI
* RIO GIGLI
* HIGH PLAINS GIGLI

The possibilities are endless . . .
