Title: "The Horror of Party Beach" Haiku
Post by: Andrew on June 27, 2006, 06:32:16 PM
Water fish-monster
Lover of hotdogs and blood
Sodium allergy

No obvious reason for this, I was just in a strange mood.

Is now a good time to flex my chance at winning a free DVD from Andrew, or am I going to make an ass out of myself?

"Sodium allergy" has six syllables in it, Andrew. Your haiku is kaput.

It's cool....change sodium to soda, which is a term often used for sodium.

This is something I was aware of, but I do not believe all haiku must have 5, 7, 5.  I know I have seen them with small departures.  I did not want to break the standard rule, but man was it fun to end with "sodium allergy" in there.

Dear Lord...what madness have I stumbled upon...this place gets stranger by the minute...

A fish monster once
approached looking for humans.
No humans here, I said.

I once read someone describe the best haiku as the one that is least noticed. The example given was something along these lines:

little bird walking
over wet roof. footprints it
leaves behind.

The intent of the haiku is to make the reader feel as though they are there and to give them subtle emotions with these few, precious words. I like this one above. Subtle, to the point, and lots of room for emotional interpretation

Hot-dog-mouthed beach freaks.
Three-year-old Derf sees and screams
Grows to write warped poems.

Frankenstein has come.
Dracula and Wolfman, too.
Lou Costello faints.

Buckaroo Bonzai:
Monkey Boy invader of
The 8th Dimension.

Tor Johnson looms large
Can't speak understandably
Rules in Yucca Flats.

I could do this all day, but to spare what little sanity may still exist here, I'll stop. For now.

Peter, you have never seen this one?  I spill over with effervescent joy at being able to make the introduction.  It really is a grand old b-movie.  Enjoy.

You could do that all day!  Excellent, Derf; I always count on my fingers, keeping beat on my thigh when I read haiku.  If I like it, I eventually stop counting syllables.  Counting syllables is part of the fun and challenge!

Title: Haiku board!?!?!?!
Post by: Derf on August 24, 2007, 09:14:40 PM
Yagh! When did this child board start, and how did I miss it? I just logged in and saw Allhallowsday's response to "Derf's Haiku." Cool! Now I have a specific place to torment poor souls! I'll have to start practicing again.

Rubber octopus
Sits still; Bela rocks gently.
The monster has no bride.

Snake Plissken looms large.
Maggie is hot--just for Brain.
Cabbie dies with cab.

Ferris Bueller skips
Cameron grows cajones.
Rooney is destroyed.

Cowboy mummy kills
Old folks are helpless; Elvis
Kicks butt and saves day.

I snuck it in on you, my friend.  I've been wanting to start a board for bad movie haiku for a while.  The other day, I suddenly realized that I had stopped creating haiku for new reviews and that made me sad.  So, in hopes that it would keep me from forgetting that making them is kinda fun, I made the child board.

It's another weird and fun activity, like the humorous captions board.

Well, thanks, Andrew, I appreciate it even if everyone may get sick of my skills (skillz?). I *coughs modestly* am, after all, an award-winning poet (I won a poetry contest in college, first prize: $50).
