Title: Avatar Test
Post by: Andrew on November 06, 2006, 08:47:07 AM
Okay, it looks like avatars are working.

You can upload them via "My Control Center" up top.  Pictures may be up to 100 by 100 pixels, 30KB in size and .jpg, .gif, or .png formats.

I am going to play with this later, because I do not like how the avatar screws with the formatting of the post.  Perhaps moving them over to the far right?

Just me playing around.  I would delete this one, but Ash replied under it and that would delete his as well.

Hey it's cool Andrew.
Do what you gotta do.
I can always reload it.

Traditionally, the avatar on most message boards has been to the left of the post.
But set it however you like.
It don't bother me none.

Boy!
It's really picky as to what it will let you use as an avatar.

The pic really has to be small and square.
Rectangular shaped pics, be they horizontal or vertical can't be used.

I must've tried at least 5-10 pics and only one of them worked...the one you see above.

Can the 30 KB size limit be increased?

I set it to 100 by 100 pixels.  Anything that size or smaller will work.  You can usually see how many pixels a image is by right clicking on it and going to properties.  There are a couple of avatar sites out there and most conform to 100 by 100.  If you get much larger you start screwing with the page layout.

The 30 KB size limit (the other limit I put on them) can be changed, but I think that should be good.  Some people are still on dial-up and large avatars can start seriously slowing down their viewing.

Title: One problem - flat view

The avatars do not work correctly in flat view.  I dropped a line to the Phorum support guys, because the fix looks like more work than I want to do.

Quite frankly 100x100 and 30kb is being very generous as a lot of boards won't allow above a 10kb image. I like the 100x100, but my avatar is only 5.2kb; helps to conserve bandwidth. I have been on some boards where members linked to avatars off site, and used animated gifs (as much as 600kb in size). Being on dial-up, I stopped frequenting those boards due to it being too difficult to access them.

You mean there are still people out there who use dial-up & flat view?!

Hehe!
Just kidding.

Dial-up should be banned.
It should be filed under "Cruel & Unusual Punishment".

Never got a reply back from the guy who made the mod, but I finally looked at the code and figured it out.

Flange, the mod did not come with any pre-installed avatars.  You have to upload one into "My Files" under "My Control Center" and then you will be able to select it as your avatar.  Any file that is less than 100 by 100 pixels in size and under 30 KB will work.  If you cannot make one, there are a couple of avatar sites out there if you search under google for something like "message board avatars" or such.

As soon as T9 service is available at the consumer level for $4.00 per month, I'll consider switching.

Help, anyone?
I go to the "My Control Center" and that opens fine, and there's the message saying that "here are the following avatars", or something, but there's nothing there to see.
I'd like to choose an avatar, as it looks like fun, but where are they to choose from?

If the avatar you've chosen did not upload successfully, it will not show up in your avatar list.
Probably because of size issues.

If you did upload it successfully, it will show up in the list and then you can select it.

First, you need to go to the "Edit My Files" page in your Control Center, & upload your pic, THEN go to the Avatar Options page & select your avatar.

well, look at all the neat options --
Now "Control Panel" or "my control panel", or what have you, has disappeared completely --
the new format looks very slick indeed, but where is the control panel now?

Peter,

The new place for controlling your settings is under "Profile."  There should be a little menu bar centered above the posts.
