Title: New Message Board
Post by: Andrew on November 10, 2006, 12:37:17 AM
Hi folks, this is the new installation.  I am hoping that it will work smoothly, while allowing guests to post.  The only two things I could not get to correctly import were the avatars and also private messages.

Going to bed soon, because I am exhausted, but I am off tomorrow and will be doing testing and tweaks.  My goal is to stop interrupting us being able to discuss bad movies and also to stop having to play with the darn message board configuration.

Hey!
This isn't so bad at all.

Matter of fact, a gaming clan I used to be in used this exact same setup for their forum so I'm used to it already.
It was identical to this one.
This board actually has quite a few features that the old one didn't.

By the way, can we switch to the threaded view or is it flat view only?

Looks good!   :)

Andrew,

I know you want to limit number of sub-topics, but could I suggest one for OT threads?  We do get a fair number of OT threads, and it would keep them out of the main movies forum.

Just a thought.  Either way, good job on the new forum/layout.  Thanks for all the effort in getting things transferred over.

Erm.....wow....er...wow. Just wow!

I like the new look may have to play around with the options for text. I've seen some of the obvious stuff on other boards, but am curious about others.

Good evening Mr. and Mrs. Mutant and all the freaks at bay.

What does this look like?

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

Two shows nightly, THE LIZARD KING ON STAGE!!!!!!

Now I know, half the battle and all that crap.....

By the way, if you look up in the right hand corner at the top of the page, you'll see those colored blocks.
Click each one to change this forum's theme color.

Also, if you look at the lower right corner of your posts by where it says "Report to Moderator", you'll notice a little pencil and paper icon.  If you click on that, you can quick-edit.
(you have to be logged in to see it)

And...if you go to the main page and click where it shows who's online (example: 4 Guests 2 Users) you can see where each person is on the boards, what post they're reading and if they're currently posting on a topic.

Neat!   :)

It'll take some getting used to, but we are nothing if we aren't capable of coping with change.  Especially since I've never used another board before.  It almost feels like I'm cheating on my imaginary wife.  Of course this is all after me mentally sitting in a corner thinking 'the world is changing too fast' and quivering quietly...

Well, not exactly, but once I learn the ins and outs we'll be flying along!  [I'm still trying to figure out what all the symbols mean, but I'll get there]

Hope it's easier to maintain Andrew.  Like every good concert I've been to [well that's not many but besides the point] people tend to forget about all the administrative nightmares and bits and pieces that need to be looked after, so the behind the scenes work sort of falls out of sight [for me at least.]  Hopefully this will make it more fun for you to maintain and let's you concentrate on being a Bmovie fan rather than battling away the evils of spam, which despite making a good idea for a B-movie in itself, is less fun I'd imagine than it sounds!

Somewhere in there I was trying to make the point that we all appreciate the effort you go to to maintain this site, and whilst the outpourings of affection here tend to follow mostly right after the site changes/goes down for a little while, I'm sure everyone will agree that we always appreciate every effort made on our behalf of making this a vibrant and thriving community of wackos!

 :D

Exactly...All you do is greatly appreciated.

This new site is great...it's like getting a new car!

Andrew,

I'm liking the new board!

Normally I hate other boards (PHbb, and the such) but I'm really liking this one.  One of the main reasons why I always visited the old board was due to it's simplicity.  But, as Dean said...times are changing.

Hope this one will be easier on you to maintain Andrew.  We do appreciate everything!

I can access the board now without the error problems.

I know, you all were worried about me, but I'm here.

Brought a few old friends along with me as well, in case you missed them.

Thanks all and I am glad it appears the new board is working without any major problems now.  Wondering if Menard was seeing residual problems from the server move, because that sounded weird (I read your post in the old message board).

I want to try out some color changes yet, to see if if I can make this "feel" more like the old board.  The gray does, but I need to see how the green and black will look.  One thing that has been worrying me for some time is the ease for people reading white text on a black background.  When I first set the website up, 800x600 was what many people had.  Now 1280 x 800 (or even larger) is probably the norm.  Increasing the font size is probably the best solution.

But its the content, right?

Actually, with this board, it is easy for me to add more.  I just do not know if where you go them from allows that (if they are copyrighted works).

I get them from Smiley Repository (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/); they allow hotlinking from their site. I don't know about the copyright status (they freely admit that they collected them from across the web). They do have a zip file you can download, on the homepage, which contains every smiley on their site.

I do like the the new board. I hope you can get the old green and black back. It just seemed to have a b-movie feel about it.

Besides that its great

Well done andrew, it is a huge step up from the last forum interface, which quite honestly turned me off from the original - I'm a junky for familiarity and one aspect I didn't like was that each "thread topic" was a different color...i tended to completely overlook the green rows. I don't mind it so much with the posts within the message but i didn't like it on the main menu.

I'll be interested to see where you go tweaking this one, but so far so good. I love the graphic look of it and didn't find it too difficult to navigate to the board. I hope you'll take suggestions. I need to play around with the features since i don't know what half of them do.

I feel like an idiot but i can't figure out why you can't reply to a specific post - do i have to scroll to the very top or bottom to select REply? :hot:

Me Likey a Lot

how do you use the INSERT FLASH feature?

Each message has a "quote" button; you can click that.  If you don't want to quote the text from the message you are responding to, just select and delete it.

Also, there is a REPLY button at the very bottom of the message list as well.

Thanks, that helps. When I have more time i'll have to sit down and read through the Help features, most of it i can figure out by just messin around with it. The graphic interface is great, i'm lovin it. Makes it much more lively

Welcome aboard and that is a great nickname.  I actually play Warhammer 40K, as Tyranids, and one of my converted carnifexes is nicknamed Tars Tarkus.

I'll figure the ins and outs soon enough, but I had to mention one feature that was handy that I didn't realise:

I was writing up a reply, and had to step out for a bit in the middle of it, and when I came back and tried to post it warned me that there was a new reply and suggested that I review my post just in case!

This new forum is getting too worryingly smart for me [well almost...]

How many years has it been since the last change in the board?

He'll concur with everyone who has previously said that it'll take some getting use to, but he'll survive this latest change. At least, he doesn't have to register again.

February 2001 is when we last had a major change.  Making a transition to a new board that would cause as little hardship as possible was high on my list.  Probably why it had not happened before lately.

Not a bad idea at all, especially if everyone would get use from it.  I guess my worry at this point is that I have divided the board up too much.  It appears to be working well, but I do not want to go overboard.  Any thoughts?

SMF has child/sub-forums capability. How about adding a sub-forum for trades to one of the categories like Bad Movies or Off-Topic?

I am somewhat shooting myself in the foot here as movietraders.org is registered to me. No site yet, but that was the idea behind it.
