Title: Blood Freak
Post by: Andrew on November 17, 2006, 06:34:11 PM
Herschell's drug addiction causes serious side effects when he eats experimental turkey meat.  Nothing says, "Happy Thanksgiving!" like a turkey-headed man killing drug users and drinking their blood to satisfy his own addiction.

That turkey head is disturbing. Where did you find BLOOD FREAK?

Actually, where did you find MILLENNIUM and SYNGENOR? I have never seen these titles on the shelve of any store or movie rental.

Poor, poor, Herschell. According to the IMDB he came to America from Europe to make movies and ended up doing turkeys like this (yes, he also wrote, directed, and produced). To add injury to insult he was badly burned in the late 70s ending even the slightest semblance to a career. I wonder where he would have been now if this hadn't happened. I highly doubt he'd be the next Corman, but I wonder what his current films would be, if he would still be making them.

I loved how the same woman's scream is used over and over and OVER. :buggedout:

The guy getting his leg cut off and screaming like a banshee was funny, too. :teddyr:

I've been meaning to review this one myself over at the Graveyard. Maybe I can get to it next year sometime.

I found this one at KMart back in 1990. I pawned it for $2 a few months later. I always wished I hadn't done that, but it didn't have enough T&A for my taste at the time.

At the time, I hadn't started smoking yet, so for me, that scene at the end when the narrater starts choking on his cancer stick was hilarious.

A few years ago Steve Hawkes (who now runs a reserve for sick and old exotic animals) had a visator attacked and mauled by a lion he had . It was on CNN! I also saw him being interviewed by Steve Cavell on The Daily Show. He was wearing a loin clothand the Daily Show jerk asked him if lions and people would be able to have sex. Hawkes still has the same hairstyle he had in BLOODFREAK!

Are his burns still visible?

I didn"t notice any scars or burns...he seemed to look just like he did in the movie...only older. He actually looked to be in real good shape, for his age.

Hawkes was interviewed by Keith Olbermann a couple of times after the tiger incident, he was quite distraught which made him harder to understand on top of his accent. I was guessing he was a little drunk as well, but I could be wrong.

He starred in some films that may have made unauthorized use of the Tarzan character. I don't think the films ever got a legit release in the US, they mostly played in South America and Africa. When he in the news because of the tiger, they included shots of him giving a tour of his house and mementos of his film career, posters and photos of his Tarzan days were visible.

I read some old interviews with Hawkes online he maintains the films were authorized, and were just meant to be entertaining kids films. When asked about Blood Freak, he has said he hates the film since he only made it to get money he needed since he wasn't paid for earlier film work.

It's funny he hates Blood Freak, that movie even inspired a band that's adored in the underground metal scene, wonder if he ever knows about it, good album:

Rumors I've heard are that the makers of this film used to make some old school low budget porn and that the producers could only get funding if they made it such a morality tale (drugs and premarital turkey sex are bad mmkay) -the irony.  I have no idea how one could verify such rumors though hehe.

Great review - had me laughing out loud several times.  I swear, were-turkey sex has to be in the top ten of the oddest things ever presented in a b-flick!

A reader named "Chris AZ" wrote in to solve the mystery of what the one scientist is talking about.

The mystery word is "caponization" - in other words, castration of the turkey.  I think eating that meat would worry me, considering the castration is done with chemicals.  I will be updating the review.

In what I read, Hawkes maintained he really only wanted to make films aimed at kids, entertaining family fare and such. Talk about straying from your goals and ideals to pay the bills.

The stuff I found through Google was from when I was looking up more info on his Tarzan films after the tiger incident. Most of what I found were online fanzine articles and interviews concerning Blood Freak. It seems to be the thing he will be remembered for if he's remembered at all, in the US anyway.

Maybe the article in languages I couldn't read had more Tarzan info. Although his films weren't mentioned in that AMC doc about Tarzan several years ago, which makes me think they were trademark infringements, and that film even mentioned the legal action taken against a French aninmated spoof that had to change some names.

If Herschell wanted to eat some turkey for Thanksgiving, he'd have been better off eating this "turkey" of a film, before it was released.

I brought Blood Freak to the family thanksgiving celebration this year, hoping to start a new tradition. It didn't go over so well with the kid in college, but those of us who remember the '70s had a great time.

You left out my favorite quote: "We could use a husky man like you at my turkey farm." I need to get that one on my iPod.

This movie is a must see for bad movie fans

Saw this one on a "Turkey Day Filmfest" an overnite bad movie marathon the day after thanksgiving. It played with Inframan, Darktown Strutters, and Silent Night Deadly Night.

I've kept a lot of DVD's because they were so bad (and only bad) that they were actually enjoyable.  Never before have I seen a movie so positively god awful and still somewhat enjoyable.  I do feel bad for Steve Hawkes, but hey, that's show business.

Did anyone watch any of the short features that were on the special edition DVD like The Walls Have Eyes or the short on nudism?

I don't think anybody TRULY knew how evil drugs were until "South Park" 's Mr. Mackey came along, but

I'm sure if I saw this movie, it would quelch any desire I had left. How many movies (esp. zombie) have

been made where the transformation occurs after doing some "bad" crack, weed, or other illegal

substance? THERE'S A RESEARCH PAPER THERE SOMEWHERE...or maybe I'm high.  :hot:

It doesn't get much worse than perpetually moving

Weirdly enough, I was a foreman at the factory where the famous saw scene was filmed (Jansko Furniture, Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

The guy scared the s**t out of several workers by letting his tiger run through the factory.

What I have always been curious about was-in the leg cutting scene...where the guy is holding up his  bleeding leg....it looks as if the guy REALLY had no bottom half to his leg...as if in actual life he was an amputee.

First off, just wanted to say hi to everyone...today was my first time on Bad Movies.com and I liked it so much that I went ahead and registered on the boards.  Glad to see there's some Blood Freak fans out there, since it was shot in my home state of Florida.  Central Florida, I believe.  Like many of you, I also recommend it as required Turkey Day viewing!

If you want to talk about Florida movies, you can't beat "Night of the Blood Beast." It was filmed in the mountains just west of Cape Canaveral (Kennedy Space Center).

Unfortunately they must have leveled the mountains to build Disney World.

So this was the only way for moviemakers during the 70s to show the dangers of drugs in society. They couldn't have just made a drama and eliminate all the monster turkey s**t in the movie.

Almost like this was two different films edited together, one a drama about a guy involved with drugs and the other a horror movie about a guy who eats a experimental turkey and turns into some turkey monster and kills people only there wasn't much of the second movie and so they mashed the two together into this weird movie which somehow is played on Turner Classic Movies on Friday night late night.

This film is a week-of-Thanksgiving Day tradition for the Washington Psychotronic Film Society (wpfs.org)
