Title: Dead Alive
Post by: Andrew on November 25, 2006, 04:10:12 PM
Peter Jackson's splatter comedy is astounding! It contains a kung fu Catholic priest, a zombie-mulching lawn mower, and buckets and buckets of fake gore. Viewers are likely to simultaneously experience absolute revulsion and uncontrollable laughter.

Peter Jackson has made a lot of similar films to this. The first of them Bad Taste, while it doesn't have any lines that are quite the gems that Father McGruder gets to deliver, does have some spiffy ones. Like the vomit drinker who joyfully proclaims, "OH, I GOT A CHUNKY BIT!" Capital fun. Hard to believe that he went on to make The Frighteners.

I must say, this movie was fantastic. Quite a love story, really. Oh, and some zombies and gore. The only downside: do not see the rated version. All the good stuff is edited.

I saw this movie a few years ago and all the blood-drenching perversion made me think of the grandpa of all bloodbath flicks: Blood Feast! Made in 1964, this movie (so I've heard) was the first to use gratuitious gore. Believe me, you gotta see it to believe it. The "plot" revolves around a deranged Egyptian caterer who worships the Blood Goddess Ishtar and is going around collecting body parts from comely young women to bring her back to life ( I swear this is true!). With long, lingering shots of hacked up bodies, awful acting, enough buckets of blood to keep the "Evil Dead" movies in business for another 50 years, and a nice short running time (around 70 minutes), this is one that is dying to be on this page! Please read this and find this movie!! I promise you, it belongs on every bad movie lovers shelf!

I checked out this movie because of your recommendation. This had to have been the funniest movies I've ever seen (except for Mel Brooks films of course)!! Although I don't know how Lionel could have memories of almost drowning, when he was across the room!! How do you see the hand in the water? Or the woman's face?? But I will say... the best scene had to have been Father McGruder's Ass kicking scene!! I love that little catch phrase of his. When did mexicans move into New Zealand??? How can this horrible movie come from the same place as Xena: Warrior Princess? I didn't know a single lightbulb could illuminate a person's features so well. I'm glad the cops got there so soon, and how well they interrogated Lionel and Paquita. P.S.My intestines are prettier than yours!

Ya know, I saw the this movie in the videos stores for a long time now and always laughed at the cover. I never went ahead and picked up and read it though...until I found badmovies.org and found out what it was all about. I went out the next day, and bought myself a copy of this classic. Hilariously gory with a twisted love story. Can't wait for PJ's Lord of the Rings. Just hope he tones down the violence for that one.

This movie is great! Not only is it one of the goriest flicks ever made, it features very good acting, a well-done love story, laugh-out-loud comedy, and inventive dialogue. And it's nice to see somebody kicking ass for the right reason: for the Lord!

Wonderously gorey with side splitting moments of humor. This movie is great! I bought a copy recently, it has come yet but I can only pray it's the unedited version as it even more of a gore fest! Fantastic!

What's to say that hasn't already been said about this gore classic? Zombies, kung-fu priests, rat-monkeys, zombie babies and enough innards and outards of both the dead and living to make a nun cry! The lawnmower scene ranks right up there in the Gore Hall o' Fame. Definitely a movie I'm proud to own, and one you should too. Just make sure you get the unrated version.

I saw Dead Alive about a year ago with my girlfriend, and I loved it so much I held a party with my friends so they could see it! They all liked it too--the sacrilicious comments of Father McGruder, the HORRIBLE stop-motion animation, the brutal death of that nerdy scientist in the beginning, and the scenes after scenes of relentlessly gut-wrenching gore!! I can't advocate this movie more--if you love to watch ANY kind of movie, this one will stay in your mind!

Although the movie was only 70 somewhat minutes, it took my friend and I a good 2 hours to watch the entire film. What with all the rewinding and slow motion, this movie is great.
The epitome of a good horror movie. Fun, entertaining, gory... Not only one of the best horror movies I've seen, but the best comedy as well. Forget Austin Powers and those other movies, rent Peter Jackson movies for a good laugh.

Dead/Alive or Braindead as it is known outside of America, has to be hands down, or squirming in a pile of blood, as Peter Jackson would have it one of the most ludicrous zombie films out there. While the production value is utter crap Jackson amuses his audience with memoriable charaters and over the to blood. Very gruesome and funny one can not help but see a connection to Dead/Alive and the comedy of the Evil Dead. Although to some disapointment some of the characters fail to be anything more then one-dimensional and the only real memorable line is Father Mcgrungers' I kick ass for the Lord and some the cheesy scene where the mother eats a dog and all the audience see is it's tale out of her mouth. In truth it's a two star movie.

What a movie? Does it get any better than this? Peter Jackson is a genius at this sort of movie making. The zombie attacks, incredible, the acting, well that is another story. Then again, who views these films for the acting ability anyhow?

I picked up the "unrated" version of this film on
dvd after reading about it here. I have to admit
that it is indeed the funniest and goriest film
I've ever seen. I highly recommend it to any
horror buff or comedy buff (if they can stand the
gore). It is quite simply a masterpiece deserving
a spot next to my Evil Dead collection. Enjoy

Yes this movie is really well made and pretty funny. BUT it is really not my cup of tea. Plus It doesn't seem as complete as evil dead 1 or 2. The characters are not quite perfect. (other than Father Mcgruder. he is perfect in everyway)

It has the gore down pat. But actualy seems to rely on it to heavily. It actually distracts from the movie at points.

I'm not saying this isn't a good movie but it has some weeknesses and you have to be the right type of person not to have it overly insult your taste at some point in time.

4 green globs.

I remember, a few years back, that cinemax, when they showed cult classics, classic kung-fu flicks, and had Troma and horror movies on EVERY sunday night, showed Dead Alive on a midnight. It was summer, and I was not tired in the least. I turned on Cinemax, and Dead Alive was on next, so, being a horror movie afficianado, I stayed up to watch it. It was kick ass non-stop! A couple years later, I rented the unrated version. Not as good as on cinemax. So I e-mailed a couple friends to find the time listing from a couple years ago. One mailed it to me. I found out I watched the original New Zealand version, and that because the movie was so gory, they asked people to actually change the channel if offended by guts, blood, violence, child abusement, animal abusement, they were married and/or had little children, they were easily frightened, had heart problems, had mental problems, or were taking some forms of medication! I considered myself very, very lucky and I'm looking for a copy of the European version(British, or New Zealand, hopefully). If anyone has an extra copy, or can make a copy, e-mail me for my address, please. Oh, by the way, "I kick ass for the Lord!"

Dead Alive is the best, and goriest horror film of all time. It had everything a horror movie fan could want in a movie, rat monkeys, decapiations, strangulation by intestines, a kung fu fighting priest, zombie sex, gallons of blood, a zombie with a lawn gnome for a head, and a climactic scene your not soon to forget, i won't give it away, but it invloves a room full of zombies and our hero with a lawnmower!
Deffinatly a must see, thank you Peter Jackson

Today I purchased the unrated DVD of this film. I swear to god it almost doesn't belong on a bad movie page. It's so perfectly and flawlessly "bad" that Peter Jackson obviously knew exactly what he was doing when he made it. It had a great story that covered up its weak points with some superior special effects. It had zombie sex and a zombie baby. This movie truly is a classic not just of the B-world.

"Braindead" is really exceptionally funny. I fell on the floor laughing several times during the film. Two scenes stand out in my opinion: The walk in the park with the baby, and the kung-fu priest kicking legs & arms off zombies... see this one. You wont regret.

Rented "Dead-Alive" from Blockbuster (bring B-movies home :) and boy was I hurting myself with laughter. From the opening scene on Skull Island, to the dinner scene, to the scene, scrambled egg/zombie sex scene, to the baby in the park . However, the lawn mower scene seemed lacking to me. Maybe because I was watching from afar and couldn't really get a great amount of detail.

My friend and I are both B-movie afficianados, and were laughing our asses off at the dialogue - "I kick ass for the Lord!" and "...and they raped all the little tree monkeys." had us rolling on the floor.

This movie kicked ass, and I'm hoping to get my grubby paws on the unrated version. Oh, and the English version (I have relatives across the pond. :)

This movie isn't 'one of the goriest' or a 'great gore film'. It is THE goriest film ever made. I have never seen so much gore in my life! It has arm removals, head removals, leg hand and half a head removals, intestines, skinned legs, squashed heads, spoon-through heads, feeding headless zombies by pouring food down throats, impalations, skin-rippings, liver-removals, body explodings, burnings, intestine-gnawing, and much more!

I was a little disappointed, just because I really don't like comedic horror. The gore effects are great, but the movie just isn't scary. It's more like a Monty Python bit.
I don't really consider it a horror film.

Braindead - all time classic. Pete Jackson had been trying to raise the money for this movie for years. His "Meet The Feebles" was his way of saying "f**k you" to the money men who had consistently refused to back "Braindead". "The Feebles" seemed to come over as more spiteful than anything else - although it is very funny in the way it skewers producers, money-men and the general arseholes and sharks that abound in the movie biz. "Braindead" was recently seen on British TV, uncut.(Part of a season of "extreme cinema" on our ever wonderful Channel 4).If you get the chance, grab the uncut version - the rated version simply does not do this incredible film justice.

Oh boy, that's CULT! Can anybody imagine Jackson making "Lord of the Rings" now? I can clearly see it: Blibo Baggins splatters 6000 Orks with a medieval lawn - mower, while the mighty Gandalf gets his gutts ripped out... And the gutts return as the Intestic Rider to fight evil!!!
I'm from Germany, and I just had a similar movie... It was called "Fresst die Lebenden!!!" ("Eat the Living" ) and starred some friends who just liked to make a movie, like Jackson's "Bad Taste". And although I couldn't believe... "Eat the living" is WAY more bloody than "Braindead".

It's already been said many times by many better people, so I won't belabor the point. BUT, this is the greatest friggin' movie ever! I borrowed this from my methamphetamine crazed neighbor when I was living in Oceanside California, spent all the entertainment money on beer and was facing a long weekend. Loved it!!! Had to watch it again when I was sober to make sure it wasn't DT's. Then had to watch it again totally 'faced because...well, I was in a bad place then...anyway, this flick kicks butt. I's huge,it's EPIC!! I laughed...I cried...I fell in love!!!

Man, this is the only movie I ever hurled over (and I have a really strong stomach!) It was the ear eating scene that did it...but damn, never before did hurling feel so good! I still laugh 'till I cry over this film, no matter how many times I watch it, and I STILL get the dry-heaves over some of the gore that's in more bad taste. I've included my email address, and if anyone knows movies with equal or greater gore than this film...either including gross gore OR funny gore...(eyeballs turn into spirals) you will suddenly feel impelled to send me an email with the name(s) of those movies!

I'm not even going to bother commenting on how awesome this movie is. I wouldn't be able to add anything new to what's already been said. However, I think that all of you are giving Father McGruder way too much credit. Sure, "I kick ass for the lord!" is a funny quote, and his kung fu scene is beyond entertaining, but I think that Lionel deserves more credit, and nobody seems to be giving him any recognition! Lionel excells at physical comedy, and he goes from a complete momma's boy, to the ultimate zombie ass kicker! "Party's over." kicks the s**t out of, "I kick ass for the lord!"

There are three versions of "Dead Alive" - two of which are available in the U.S. You must have seen the "R" rated version, which cuts out a huge amount of the meat. Try the unrated version, it's much better. In addition, the one not released in the U.S. is called "Brain Dead." (Not to be confused with the George Kennedy flick by the same name.) "Brain Dead" can be found in completely uncut form, it actually has footage cut from the unrated U.S. release

This movie is so awesome!!! now i'll writte in french...

(WARNING: this has some spoilers in it, so read it ONLY after watching the movie!)
I love this movie! Nothing better, except for the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness flicks, which are in a totally different category as I see it. The rat thingy that bites mother at the zoo, starting the whole core of the movie, was neither rat-like, nor scary. It kind of reminds me of a character from Meet the Feebles... I can see the thing running around Bletch's office as he gets a "Clinton" from the cat, but that's a totally different review.

You have to enjoy the timeless scenes and crap lines from this movie! Seeing the dinner guest eating the custard complete with gangrenous, bloody ear, zombie sex and the lovechild thereof, a kung fu priest, wholesale-lawnmower-flesh-mulching action, rivers of blood and one of the greatest lines that I have ever had the pleasure of hearing in a movie that actually made it to the store shelf... "Your mother ate my dog!"

Thank you Paquita for that wonderful schlock line. It will be forever etched into my memory!

Living in England, I get the pleasure of watching 'Braindead' -- An added 12 mins of gore and comedy. Where shall I start? Braindead is quite possibly the best B-movie I have EVER seen, and I don't know what it's even a B-movie, it's absolutely golden! PJ should of made more films like this! Sod LotR!
A mate lent it me saying it's a must watch film. I must admit I wasn't impressed in the first 5 mins, though I did laugh at the "SENGIA!" scene.. Until I later pieced it together it was meant to be a stupid horror comedy [which didn't take long!] and I was laughing through the rest of the film non stop! I think I cracked a rib at the baby in the park scene.. I'm laughing now thinking of it! And of course the infamous Father McGruder who "Kicks arse... FOR THE LORD!"
If you like this film try Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles and The Frighteners. Some more brill PJ movies! All hilarious and just as disgusting as each other!
You're not a B-movie fan until you see this!! GET IT!

After reading about this movie here, I just had to have it. I vaguely remembered seeing the DVD version in walmart once before (I had no idea what it was then), and after much searching, found it again (the unrated version, at that!).

This is by far THE FUNNIEST, GORIEST, OVER THE TOP horror comedy I have ever seen. I watched it with two friends last night (first time for all of us), and we were laughing so hard that one guy actually peed himself! My face still hurts!

This movie now holds a special place in my movie collection. Thanks Badmovies.org! Without you, I would have never found this truly incredible masterpiece of cinema.

Fantastic movie, I just can't stop myself from laughing every time I heard the phrase "I kick ass for the LORD!" It's so damned funny, and the zombie baby rocks!

It isn't the most gory film I've seen however, since Cannibal Holocaust surpases it in the shock & gore department by much (good luck trying to get that movie, it's banned in about 50 countries).

Still, nothing can beat choping off zombie heads with a lawnmower, or fighting zombies with crazy Kung Fu moves, go father Mcgruder, Kick more zombie ass!

That's pretty funny. Before you call someone ignorant you might want to learn about punctuation and capitalization.

No one here including the reviewer mentions that this was also filmed as a period piece. Late 50's early 60's? Always wondered why Jackson did this. It has absolutly no bearing on the plot. Seems it would just drive production costs up.

"Sincara!" *slice sound* Man O Man do I dig this movie! It is possibly one of the nastiest things I have ever seen. Seriously, if that guys mother (as a giant ratmonkey zombie) really existed, just the sight of her would make me vomit. And the zombie baby scenes are priceless! I need to buy it again.
