Title: Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
Post by: Adam Marler on December 27, 1998, 09:24:41 PM
Fragging great movie!  Although it was billed as a sequel to the first movie, it is more of a remake.  As I understand it, the first 20 mins of Evil Dead 2 recaps what happened in the first one.  Then the sequel begins.  I love the scene in the tool shed!

This is a great KICK ASS movie!!  Bruce Campbell is the best! And with Sam Raimi who now does Xena (his brother Ted who plays Joxer was the possessed mother), and a lot bigger budget, this movie can't possibly be a bad movie!  Of course Army of Darkness is awesome too!

The scene where "the evil" or whatever it was chased Ash around the house, and he's running backwards and articulating like a street mime, is the funniest thing I've ever seen in any movie!  Classic!

And on the eighth day... "Evil Dead 2" was created. And the people did celebrate for thousands of years. This is one of the best. Clearly a remake of the first "Evil Dead," this is probably one of the most hilarious things to ever be put on film. Besides, how can you argue with a movie with a guy who has a chainsaw for a hand? Buy it, caress it, and watch it with someone you love.

Many people thimk that this movie is a remake of the first, but it isn't. The begining clearly is, but once the motorcycle, I mean Evil runs him down it continues the story. The reasond that they do this is because ED2 was made by a different company than ED and all the actor had moved on to other things, so they didn't have the origianal footage.

Evil Dead2 is one of the greatest (if not simply the  best) horror movie I have seen. The plot is thin, but who needs one when it's really entertaining at the point that almost any other gore film can stand the comparison. Most lines are funny and Bruce Campbell is is better than real. Also, I chainsaw(saw, get it?) Army of Darkness, who even if I did not found it as good as the previous(sincerely, I think the whole time travel idea sucked hard) but still it had many awesome moments. Will there be a sequel to Ev.D3?

When I'm old and gray and on my death bed I'm going to gather all my friends around and we'll have a b-movie fest with all my favorites. It will go on for days. Pizza, beer, popcorn, candy. And at the end for the grand finali we'll all lean back and watch the best of the best. Evil Dead 2.  The lights will go down and a hush will go over the crowd.  We'll all sit back with a smile and enjoy the sheer genious and poetry of it all.

Yep this is one of the best movies of all time.
So What can I really add.  The problem is,  Now too many people have seen this movie and it pretty much lost it b-movie status.  It's no longer a secret gem.  This film was really cool ten years ago when a first saw it, but now everyone has seen it.  To bad I haven't found anything nearly as cool in the last ten years to wow my friends with.  Well off I go to find more gems.  For other B-moovie experts trying to entertain friends try _Hybrid_ for sci-fi comedy, _Black Mask_ for martial arts, and _Jonny got his gun_ because not many people have seen this almost perfect film.

The Evil Dead Triology was talior made for Bruce
Cambpell. If Iam ever tonted by demons I'll be sure to call Ash (not ghostbusters). I'll never forget the "ace of spades" in the original Evil Dead, the first posession if I recall. Scared the crap outa me. This movie has always been the heart of my collection. Long live Ash and the Evil Dead. Ash is, well, groovy...he's goody little two shoes, goody little two shoes. I know though, "good, bad...I'm the guy with the Gun!!!"

This is really not Sam Rami's best. THE EVIL DEAD (1979) is still the best horror film, but EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN is a silly horror film that only brings hillarity and very little gore (not only that but it was released to theaters with an Unrated, but on video with a pathetic 'R' rating!). Some bad continuity follows too (where the hell are the other three characters that came with Ash in THE EVIL DEAD not in this film since the beginning is rehasing the first film?). Stick to THE EVIL DEAD and ARMY OF DARKNESS, EVIL DEAD 2 is a pass.

GREATEST horror/comedy movie i've ever seen.  How can't you not love Ash.  What more is there to say.  The movie was a true work of art of Sam Raimi.  My friends think im crazy for liking this movie, but I think they are the crazy ones.  And, as a notice to the site, the movie is not rated R, but not rated at all.  This all due to the wonder X rating it originally recieved.  Anyways, if you haven't, get the movie, and you'll be thanking me.

No one has mentioned on this site yet, that in the beginning of the movie Ash and girlfriend are driving the same exact car from the first Evil Dead Movie, and said car shows up later at the Airport where the next victims load it up to head to the cabin..
Also left out is the mention of how thruout the movie its daylight outside, no night, no now day, wait its night again.. okay day again.. etc..
Think my favorite part of the movie tho, is where he looks at the cabin, the skull becomes superimposed over the image and it sez, JOIN US.
As far as horror movies go.. this is how all should be made, campy in the purest sense, yet still spooky and plenty of gore, (which i think the first scream movie was going for) also anyone notice that its the same chain with eyeglass thing from the first movie, and in both movies, when he goes to pick it up near the end(of both), its been put into the shape of a skull.

Awesome. My favorite movie from the trilogy. The slapstick comedy mixed in with horror gives the movie a overall feeling of greatness. The best part of the movie, seeing Bruce Campbell saw off his hand. Although the movie wasn't really scary, there were some parts that were freaky. Linda coming back from the dead and dancing around. Linda's headless body coming into the toolshed with the chainsaw. Overall i loved the movie and Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn stands up and protects it crown as the best horror movie of all-time.

What can I say, but that I love this film?  One of the best things to me about this film is the little details, silly but they really added to the movie, like when Ash's possessed hand saw the meat cleaver and gave a little excited squeak. The scene where Bobbi Jo is entangled and dragged thru the woods to be devoured by a tree is an overlooked example of the brilliant effects in this film.  The branches entwining and even puncturing her flesh were quite convincing, at least to a dumb ole country boy like me. Lastly,  there is no one, in any movie, cooler than Ash.  Nuff said.

Oh man oh man how I love this flick.  Especially all the little jokes.   Like when he cuts off his hand and covers it with the bucket.  Then he puts that book on top of it.  Look at the title of the book, A call to arms. LOL   Then you have the Nightmare on Elm Street poster.  Which as the story goes in Wes Craven's movie the Hills have Eyes(A great flick) there is a ripped in half movie poster of Jaws.  Which was Craven's way of saying if you though Jaws was scary try this.  Well Sam Raimi say that and put a ripped in half movie poster of Craven's flick in Evil Dead to say that Evil Dead topped Hills have Eyes.  Then in Nightmare on Elm Street when Johnny Depp gets sucked into his bed, he is watching Evil Dead.  (Though it could be the first Evil Dead I'm not sure, better go watch em and make sure.)  If you truly love Evil Dead do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the book The Evil Dead Companion.  In it you will find all these little tidits of info.  Like the reason that they flash to Ash's face so often is so they could get it released in theaters, same reason why some of the blood was green.  The game kicks ass, bought and beat it.  Bruce also did the voices in Pitfall 3D and Broken Helix both for PS1.  Also check out old episodes of Briscoe County Junior and Jack of all Trades for more Campbell fun.  Next year Sam's newest movie SPIDERMAN!!!!  Look for Bruce and Sam's brother Ted in it, they have cameos.

Hail to the King baby!

"GROOVY" - that word from Ash (the man, the myth, the legend) is what describes Evil Dead 2 and not to mention the whole damn trilogy! Hilarious from the moment Ash's girlfriend gets decapitated with a shovel til Ash gets sucked back in time through a portal!  The Evil Hand vs. Ash scene is what made me bust my gut laughing.  I had tears rolling out of my eyes in the blood from the wall scenes and the infamous eyeball scene as well.  Overall everything in this movie is worth seeing over and over again!

This has to be one of the best films in all of creation! I personally think that this is the best Evil Dead movie ever. Heck, if I saw this movie in Kindergarden, and the teacher asked us what we would want to do when we grow up, I would've said, "I want to have my hand to go crazy and I want ta' cut it off with a chainsaw and then make the chainsaw replace my hand." Unfortunatly, in reality, I said ," I wanna be Robocop!"
God, I was an idiot back then. But anyway, this movie should run for President of the USA and win!
But if they make Evil Dead IV, then I hope they don't use CGI. That would suck. FOAM LATEX FOREVER! YEAH!

THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE! Horror shtick movies don't get better than this. Most straight movies don't get better than this! The first Evil Dead was a run of the mill straight to video kinda slop only saved by the incredible presence of Bruce Cambell. This time around we're back and we're armed. Bigger budget, more actors, tighter script, some stock footage, a real makeup kit, and a double-barreled shotgun! Pure pain the first time around. Laughter till it hurt! We're screaming at the characters and cheering Ash on. We all want flying eyeballs to play with! Bruce Cambell is one of the wildest actors to come along in a long time. Just as rubberery and animated as Jim Cary and John Belishi but far more charming. You can't take your eyes of him for an instant. The hand running amuck through the cabin trying to get the drop on Ash is going to be a classic movie moment right up there with Colin Clive shouting "It's ALIVE!" in James Whale's Frankenstien, and Lugosi hissing "Good evening...I bid you welcome." Don't miss this one. Even if you're not a serious fan of horror shlock movies...at least rent this baby. Watch it with as many people as you can cram in you living room...you'll be squirting Pepsi-Cola out your nostrils on each other in no time. The third in the series, Army of Darkness, is fun, but not nearly as good as this one. Terrific flick!

Excellent movie. Perfect mix of horror and comedy. Loved the parts with Ash and his possessed hand, plus it was cool having Ash attach a chainsaw to were his hand was! LOL! If you'd like a film that delivers both laughs and screams, this is for you! 10/10!

Whos laughing now!!".No other movie comes close to how much I like Evil Dead.ED is pure horror!!ED 2 is a gravy mix of hooror and comedy.AOD is less horror and more comedy but still a good movie.ED:hail to the king is an awesome game (even though I cant get pased Annie).ED:a fistful of boomstick makes it even better!I cant get enough of Evil Dead!!!!!!!!!!!!For gods sake, how do you stop it!!!!OH, and Bruce if you read this your my numero 1 favirote actor and stay GROOVY.

I'll start off by saying that the first Evil Dead movie was  not that great, so I was a heisitant to rent the second one. Once I did, I found it to be one of my favorite films that I've ever seen. It's dark humor and memorable lines, 'Groovy,"(Spoken by Ash)  "Someones in my fruit cellar, some one with a fresh soul!" (Spoken by possessed Henreita) are just to name a few. Then there's the factor of the camere placed in the Evils view, very effective. Plus one cannot see the movie without laughing about when Ash's hand is bit by a severed head, thus becoming possessed and beating up Ash. And although diresctor Sam Raimi included a lot of comedy, he still manages to pull a few scares. Most notable when Ash has to go into the fruit cellar to retreive the pages of the Necronomicon. The forced prospectives are great. Evil Dead 2 has to be a five star movie.
And in the Words of Ash:"GROOVY"

This, along with the others in the series, was the highlight of my yearly Halloween movie month 2002 (at least 3 horror movies a day in October).  I thought this was incredible effective horror comedy.  The fancy camera work was so inspired!  The character of Ash was absolutely first rate.  I watched it several times in a row (DVD commentary).  One would hope there would be more than 3 in this series...But, at least we have these.  And they are among my favorite horror films ever!

Firstly, I've got to say your site and your reviewing style has me in stitches.  I used to frequent your site because one of my friends who is into B-movies said you were good; I wasn't into them at all.  Now thanks to your site, I have seen around twenty and own a good ten classics.  The likes of 'Reefer Madness' and Ed Wood's 'Bride of the Monster' have been a joy (with the help of a lot of liquor and a couple of mates).  So, yes.  Thanks for that.

Secondly, I guess a comment on this film would be appropriate.  I loved it; I think it is one of the funniest zombie flicks out there (and that is including the recent British-made spoof 'Shaun Of The Dead' that borrows liberally from it and various others).  Would wonder what you thought about that if you've had the chance to see it?  Bruce Campbell as Ash sawing limbs off, being goaded by his possessed hand, and the one-liner.  Myself and my friends cry with laughter and rewind the tape at 'groovy'.  Every.  Single.  Time.

I'm guessing you are overseas at the moment, so looking forward to when you come back and update the site with some more reviews.

I never thought of this movie as a sequel, but more of a reboot of the original Evil Dead (1981). I especially enjoyed the scenes involving Ash's possessed and severed hand, though I always wondered what happened to it after it crawled into the wall. This scene bothered me for years after seeing it, because Sam Raimi deliberately left it up to our imaginations; the true sign of a classic film!

My theory eventually rested on the idea that the hand became a separate living undead entity upon severance from Ash's body, that Ash did indeed shoot it through the wall with the shotgun, then as the hand died from its massive injuries, its newly disembodied soul became a part of the possessed cabin, became angry at Ash for killing it, thus spewing loads of blood out of the walls and all over Ash, before possessing the furniture and the infamous "laughing deer" on the wall. It did this because it knew that the other visitors were soon to arrive, and intentionally drove Ash temporarily insane so that he would start blasting his shotgun at the first sign of trouble, in the hopes of Ash inadvertently taking out whomever tried to step in the front door, as what almost happened in the next scene.

Only truly great films allow the viewer to add so much depth to such an already complex and complicated, intricate plot in such a highly dramatic, philosophical cinematic piece as this glorious gem of a Hollywood classic!  :teddyr:

I love Evil Dead 2...

As a younger teenager I always made a point to say I liked the first Evil Dead much more. First one was epic and I could really resonate with all of the heart they put in to making it. So being naive I kind of sneered off the sequel just a little bit. Not until this year I finally gave my full attention to the sequel.---Loved it. Absolutely over the top, comical. And I realized it was okay to like both the original and the S-remake-quel or what ever you want to call the second one. I completely forgave the continuity errors between the two. Good times. The second one is a lot more professional looking of a film, much better effects and the story isn't as drawn out. Both, are, however awesome. :p
