Title: Death Ship
Post by: stavner on January 25, 1999, 11:21:50 PM
So was the guy having the old Nazi propaganda film projected onto him end up trapped in the film forever, or what really did happen to him?

Hehehehe!  No, that was Nick being projected on.  He drowns in the cargo hold about two minutes later.

Yes, this movie has some funny (and glaring) bloopers in it, but hey, it's a horror movie, that's part of the fun.  Overall, though, I thought the scenes on the haunted ship to be creepy and atmospheric.  If only they'd wrapped that cool atmosphere around a script that made sense! It's a shame this one isn't more liked, because the whole "ghost ship" genre has been greatly underused by horror/suspense film makers.

I have mixed feelings about this movie.  On one hand the atmosphere could be good, on the other hand, the movie blows ass.  The only part I liked was Mancuso getting drowned in the cargo hold.  Otherwise, ugh.  George Kennedy stole my soul.

This movie isn't all that bad.  I also don't know why you hate George Kennedy so much.  I always found him to be so bad he's good.

There was definitely something going on in this movie, but for the most part it was actually pretty boring. I found the atmosphere generated by the haunted ship to be pretty creepy, and the Nazi undertones added to that effect. On a somewhat similar note, the newer film "Virus" was far too much like this film to be of any value. If you see this, skip "Virus."

Post by: J-Nator on June 22, 1999, 11:41:29 PM
This movie IS stupid, however, I do think the haunted atmosphere and the Nazi overtones are creepy as hell. This movie creeped me out a little when I first saw it about 12 years ago, the repetitive shots of the hydrolics stayed with me I think. But the characters are all idiots, save for the head guy who actually gives a believable performance as a man who is trying to save his family. The swarmy comedian deserved a worse death, and, if I was to ever board a haunted Nazi ship that is obviously trying to kill me and others, I like to think that I would avoid DRINKING IT'S WATER AND EATING IT'S 40 YEAR OLD FOOD!!!
also: have fun counting the number of times the phrase "We have to get off this ship!" is said

Watch for the woman drowning in blood in the shower; moments later, Kennedy is seen carting away AN INFLATABLE LOVE DOLL COVERED WITH RED PAINT under one arm, which is supposed to be her body! Oh, MERCY!

This movie was fairly bad until Crenna and Mancuso found the Nazi room.  For a short time the film actually scared me.  Did someone else direct those 5 minutes?

I have felt for years that this film is the absolutely worst, most unwatchable movie I have ever seen.
It came on TV in the late 80's a couple of times and I just could'nt sit through the whole thing .
The whole humourless atmophere of this film made me sick . The Nazi theme was just a cheap means of adding some sence of horror an already dismal excuse of a film.
I absolutely HAVE to see this film again . Next time I'll make myself see it in its entirety !

Post by: monkeygirl@thepentagon.com on January 07, 2000, 08:57:25 AM
I recently saw this movie on video ($2 weekly) after seeing it as a late night movie last year
Things that annoy me about Death Ship:
-why are the kids in a different cabin to the parents? The parents are already convinced that the Captain is insane
-why doesn't the sister make that annoying boy take a leak in the hallway?
-why doesn't the Captain kill the two kids when he sees them in the hallway? He's already proved that he's pretty evil
Also, in the scene where Nick is having the Nazi film projected onto him and the good captain is trying to demolish the projector - why don't they look behind them and look for another projector?
I was also grossed out by the woman kissing that latex mask...but that's just me

s**t, I love this movie!! It's one hell of a crap film. I like the scene where this old lady eats some candy. I think it's  always a bad idea to eat some old s**t you find on a rusty ghost ship! I have a copy of this movie and I'm proud of it!

Well I finally tracked down a copy of this movie, I have been looking for it forever. I love this movie. Just a couple of days ago I bought the new movie "Ghost Ship" that too was a really great movie, quite similar in some ways. Neither movie is what I would call scary, but they have a certain attractive creepiness to them that catches my attention.

My wife bought me a copy of this on video because I had never seen it and it looked spooky to her.  It certainly is cheap and stupid, but the premise is, admittedly, a pretty darn good one.  Nancy Holder wrote a fairly decent Ghost Ship novel called Dead in the Water the used a very similiar plotline to this movie.  Granted she also had characters and storylines, which this movie does not.  Great set though, obviously some producer had a friend with a spare ship or something and they said, "Let's make a haunted ship movie!" and made it up as they went along.  The highest praise for this skull rated movie is that it has made me hungry to watch Shock Waves again, now THAT is a great Haunted Nazi Ship movie!  Review that one Andrew, please.

Oh God.  This movie totally sucks.  Did anybody else notice that propaganda film with the little man dancing and singing on the piano was in English?  I thought it was a Nazi interrogation ship, and I was under the impression that Germans spoke German.  Maybe I was wrong.  Overall, watching this movie is a scarring blistering experience.  My friend has the movie poster, if that matters.

i was eight years of age  when i saw this film, late at night, on my own, i was fascinated at the time by the shots of the engine room and the shot of the front of the ship cutting through the water, actually these scenes have lodged themselves somewhere in my brain and pop back from time to time, i hadn't a clue what it was about other than a ship killing people...i got the video out recently 19  years later, and liked it in a nostalgic kinda way.

I have this film at home. Death Ship really isn't that bad of a movie. It might even be considered a classic of B- Moviedom. Still, the acting is that of an amateurish level.

This movie was ultimately horrendous!  From the bad acting, to the bad the bad script.  The screen writer should be shot!!!  George Kennedy is one of the worst actors I've ever seen.  Whatever money that was spent on this movie, would have been used better if it was thrown overboard, at least it wouldn't have gotten spent on that oh-so-obvious blow-up doll).  I give this movie a -1 out of 10.  Even for a B-movie, it's craptastic.

The clip that you have showing the "international date line" where the ships are day and nite includes the engine room flooding scene from "The Last Voyage" (1960).  In that movie, they were trying to stabilize the bulkhead with timbers, and in this scene, as the water floods in, you can see the timbers falling away.

However, I too saw this movie quite a long time ago.  As one of those movies that they used to play on tv late at night, your mind is always in just the right mode for this type of movie.  And for that, I like the movie. Reminds me when I was a kid and stayed up way beyond when I should have!!!

I LOVE THIS AWFUL MOVIE!
This movie is one of the main reasons my best friend and I have drug-and-alcohol issues. We saw it on late-night TV in '91 when we were about 13 or so, in a haze of THC and vodka, and spent the whole time chasing each other around, screeching "No one leaves my ship!" and howling with laughter. Shortly thereafter, I showed up at her house again, dressed up in pirate garb with a rented copy of this wretched flick under my arm. After being locked outside with her neighbors snickering for about 15 minutes, she relented & let me in, only after I promised more vodka. Still, this terrible flick is solid gold crap! I wish I had a copy.

Well sue me, but I like this film, for whatever reasons… It just showed recently on cable TV in my neck of woods, though I saw it when it first came out, when I was a wee lad, and later at the Cinémathèque. The guy who mentioned "Virus" is right, though in "Virus" — which is much, much worse than this mother — they also blatantly ripped off "Moontrap". When a 50 millions dollars movies rips off two B-movies which, wouldn't come near a tenth of of the bill — TOGETHER ! — you know you're in trouble…

I read your review of this film, and remembering it fondly from my youth, ended my session thinking you were, to put it mildly, "lame".

I am SO sorry.  I rented a copy from Blockbuster (knowing they have all the new crap, but figuring they wouldn't stock a film THIS bad), and took it home.

OH MY GOD! My eyes were burning after only a few moments of mind-numbing, sense-shattering. . . nothing.

I have now come to grips with the fact that I was very, VERY, stupid child

Yes, this movie is bad, but as others have said this movie definitely has something working in its favor.  The concept and atmosphere are pretty creepy, until we near the end of the film and George Kennedy literally blows the film out of the water with his overacting.  This movie made me realize that the concept is not too far out of reality - the Germans, Japanese, and even the British operated "death ships" in a few instances (nothing like the long-term carnage implied by this movie, though) during WWII.  I'll chalk this one up as an interesting failure.

I am in total agreement with you. Let me just say, my standards for movies are some of the lowest you'll ever find, so when I think a movie is bad, you know it's BAD. One of the dullest "horror" movies ever made. Let's just hope the new film, "Ghost Ship", is better. (Actually, that shouldn't be too hard to do.)

I saw Death Ship as a double feature 20 years ago. I thought it was a dreadful film. This is one of them Canadian Tax shelter movies (BTW, I'm Canadian). The stock footage of the sinking ship has to be one of the worst use of stock footage ever. That sequence is in B&W, for crying out loud. Everything is bad in DS. And it's EXTREMELY ugly. But as bad as it is (and it is BAD) the film does leave you with a lasting impression. It's such an ugly looking film that it's almost unique in its ugliness.

BTW, Hollywood just released a big budget "copy" of Death Ship called Ghost Ship. Something tells me this film won't be as memorable as Death Ship. LOL!

Okay, so this is an aweful movie, punctuated by George Kennedy's bizarre overacting (especially at the end).  And yet, it has a certain atmosphere that makes it memorable to me after watching it many years ago.  The concept of a floating Nazi concentration camp is extremely creepy - I guess it needs a better movie to give it life.

First off, I live on a small island in the Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. The local TV station aired this movie when I was 10 years old. I can honestly say that for a 10 year old, the script, acting and yes, even George Kennedy were scary as hell!

**A SPOILER OR TWO**

I got this movie on the basis of your review, Andrew.

Man, you were so right.

I could tell right away the Jack Hill influence in the script - random acts of cruel violence and rampant embarrassment of the women herein.  Anyone who has seen anything with Jack Hill's name in the credits knows what I mean.

The most painful thing about it was that, in spite of every actor's apparent desire to try and act in a plausible movie, the direction, effects and pacing smack them down at every turn.  And then there's the business of the ending where Marshall's wife is locked up by Ashland one moment and then, after Ashland is waylaid and Ashland and his kids ready themselves to leave the ship, Ashland's wife magically appears, out of the locked chamber and offering no explanation as to how she got out.  Amazing.

And what kind of self-respecting cruise ship lets itself get wrecked by a Nazi ship that doesn't even move?

Painful is an overused word to describe movies like this but in the case of Death Ship, it's accurate.

recently watched this and i can honestly say its not the best film nor the worst. its confusing at times, especially towards the end when scenes transition in a confusing way and most of the deaths make no logical sense whatsoever
