Title: Six-String Samurai
Post by: on April 27, 1999, 08:58:51 PM
Let's face it: Six String Samurai was never meant
to be a -serious- film.  On the other hand, it's
one of the most fun films that I've ever seen.
It's by far the greatest post-Apocalyptic
Alternate History Sushi Western ever created.

This film is good... What can i say, it has the 2 best things on earth: kung fu and rock and roll.

Four words: Live action American Anime.  Seamlessly melds almost every single aspect of American culture imaginable into a single unified whole.  Hilariously Surrealist humor.  Only "Army of Darkness" and "Le Visiteurs" (sic) come even close.  Leave reality at the door, and "Follow the Yellow Brick Road, homey."

This film is worth watching for one line. WindMill Man: "If I were you, I'd be running!" Buddy (our hero): "If you were me, you'd be good looking." hehehehe thats superhero wit my friends.

Just a note: the plural of Elvis is Elvi (like fungi, OK?)

I think buddy is sexy.
If I were the kid, I will follow him around too!  But why does he whine?
I also enjoyed the different "take" on Elvis.  The Six-String Samurai kicks GraceLand's ass anyday.

The film was tons and tons of fun to watch! Perhaps what some of you guys need is
to be russian and to like rock 'n roll better.
As hilarious the movie is, though, I suggest you go for some Red Elvises CD's
instead. They are even more so, complete with the accent, and off the wall lyrics.

When this movie recently screened on Showtime (around 4:30 AM), I was on my way to bed, and---judging from the opening sequence---I figured this was just another artsy-fartsy independent film (a perfect reason to nod off). But then "Buddy" arrived on the scene (Jeff Falcon playing a badass version of Buddy Holly with a samurai sword), and I was startled wide awake.  The intro to this film sets an unlikely stage: A nuclear apocalypse happened in 1957, the Russians WON, and Elvis Presley became the King of Las Vegas... Oooooookay. More recently, since the King's death, Rock-Warriors (such as Buddy) have been making a pilgrimage to Lost Vegas to assume the empty throne. The movie takes some getting used to, so put on your Hokey Hat. It starts out hokey, gradually becomes sort of endearing, suddenly falls back to hokey, and finishes off sluggishly, awkwardly, like a runner who used up all his juice on the first quarter-mile. DOES have fairly good soundtrack, if you are into Rockabilly and Russian Surf music (soundtrack is better than the film, by a longshot). Totally unnecessary child-interest (somebody PLEASE put that whining brat out of his misery), but some really GOOD camerawork in places, somewhat reminiscent of Woo.  Don't get me wrong, this movie is bad with a capital B, but it's strangely hypnotic.  And, god help me, after 15 minutes I realized that I was tapping my foot to the soundtrack.

Man, This movie was so cool!  I got it on video and it's still a joy to watch!  I agree with Dalbychan, this movie is basically an Anime film made live(and done right too!).

Ironically enough, the video is available from Manga video if yer looking for ir.  Manga also distrbutes hard core anime titles like Devilman, Ninja Scroll and recently Perfect Blue.  Rather appropo, ne?

Wickedest of wickeds! Six String Samurai ignores plot, acting and coherence to bring more of what you want: One awesome retro rollercoaster ride into the apocalypse! Foregoing the traditional reason of an intense rivalry Death seems to despise Buddy intuitively. Somehow, most likely through Buddy's rock'n'roll-magic aura, Death fears Buddy more than any other contender. Apparently Death's reasons are well founded as Buddy manages to severely thrash several hundred rather disgruntled commies, but finally is defeated by a certain unnamed toddlers stupidity.(p**s Me off!) However lacking in certain key elements, I definitely vote for a sequel. (Think spielberg'd be interested?)

Amazing. If you were to crawl into my mind via my nose, this movie is what you'd see. I too, now, want to tape a katana blade to the back of my 1957 hollow-body guitar and make a pilgrimage to Vegas... maybe I can be King!... as soon as Elvis dies and Russians wipe out the planet. What about that stock footage from New Mexico, eh?!? Never can see enough stock destruction. Why use so much money on special effects to blow up stuff when the world governments do it for free?!? All I can say is... I never saw Elvis take down a Communist battalion. Buddy should be King... for the greater good of mankind. Go see this movie. It will change your life(or deplete you of one).

This movie, minus the urchin, was wonderful -- every damn time that kid opened his mouth I found myself yelling "Shut up, Anakin!" at the screen.  It was kind of hard to get past that at times though it was clear that this flick needed an annoying tagalong...I just resented that they had to make the kid more annoying than even the wee man in "It Happened at the World's Fair."

And perhaps the plural of "Elvis" should be "Elvaes"...?
I dunno, ask a Latin student.

This is not merely a movie.  It is a state of mind; the sort of movie that adheres to your very soul.  It is a phenomenon, a lone fragment of the universe that fills the special void in all our lives, that being our hungering desire to seek the greatest b-movies of all time.  No where else will you witness clever allusions to the Wizard of Oz, Clint Eastwood films, and the ever present dichotomy between classic rock and heavy metal music all in a period of 2 hours.  There are two groups of human life on this Earth; those who have seen Six-String Samurai, and those who have not.

Six String Samurai is hella-sweet!  The best movie I've seen in years, in my opinion.  I have it on tape, but recorded from HBO on TV.  To hell with screwing around on the net to get a copy of this fine gem!

I can also easily say that the main character, Buddy, is the most bad-assed movie hero I have ever seen in my entire life.  Buddy takes s**t from nobody!  His fight against the Red Army was absolutely brilliant.

The only problem about Six String Samurai I found was that either viewers will LOVE or HATE this movie.  There is no middle ground like "It was OK..." with this movie. I brought my tape to school one day and I was actually threatened with suspension because my homeroom teacher said it was so horrible.  "Turn that garbage off," she said.
Narrow-minded b***h.  Grrrrr....

Finally, I have heard a pretty fantasic rumor going around on the official Six String Samurai message board (sixstringsamurai.com) , and others all over the net.  The rumor is that Six String Samurai is actually the final part of a very long story (a trilogy of short tales) written by the director.  Let's all hope so, and keep our fingers crossed.

OK, how many times does Buddy come back from the dead? HOW MANY TIMES? <Snicker> OK, the movie is the logical extention of the theme: "What would happen if kids today were to grow up and rule the world?" I don't know if this would actually happen, but from what I've seen of the teens, it's not far off.  Weird with a capital WE, but fun, nonetheless. Now, what SHOULD happen if you defeat Death? Noone dies, right? So Buddy's alive, just running around naked after making The Boy think he left this world a la Obi-Wan Kenobi. Shebam. Lost Vegas has a new King.

The best film i've seen (hum... lord of the rings...)
The martial arts are some of the best of the movies, not that ridiculous crappy pretending of matrix.
The first "hero" tha that is really badass, with no "female" sides...

This is the coolest movie since Repo Man back in the 80's. I stumbled on to it last night on Showtime and purchased the DVD this afternoon.

If you like Martial Arts/Road Warrior/Highlander meets rock-n-roll type motion pictures, this is the movie for you. The soundtrack is perfect and the movie does not have a dull moment! Six String is the best surprise of a movie since I stumbled on to Drop Dead Gorgeous

**** out of **** stars!

I loved this film from the first moment that I saw it...I also loved the hidden metaphor for the history of rock and roll. Watch the movie again and see if you can pick out the different phases of rock and roll. Hint...the spacemen are references to David Bowie...the four horsemen of the Apocalypse? Just as easy.

I absolutely loved the movie.  Even though some of the camera effects and script was a bit hokey it's still great.

I tried to get my friends to watch it...but as Wont points out...they apperantly don't have any souls.

The band is the "Red Elvises".  They are the "Pin Pals", because they bowl.  It's spelt "homie".  Anyways, this movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen, "B" movie or big name.  The cinematography is really really really great.  This movie has won several awards too.  The fights, the lines, that annoying kid, this movie is awesome.  And they wear nice shoes, too.

Man, this movie is magnificent!  Marvellous artsy directoin (without being a truly artsy film...yay!) SUPERB soundtrack that gets your toe tappin, and rounds out the slow parts in the movie (and often times the reason the flick goes into my dvd player!  Can't get enough!)  Although what in teh heck is up with the windmill people's deity?  Strange s**t!  Anyway, it definitely earned it's four slime rating!

One interesting thing I noticed while rewatching this film today..."the kid"'s name id David.  In the very beginning, the mother is screaming it before she gets the arrow to the back.  If you have the DVD, turn on the subtitles.

Post by: One Who Knows on November 25, 2006, 04:10:12 PM
I have it on authority that The Kid is never named in the film.  Contrary to the poster who said his name is David, that notion is based on an error that the subtitle people made.  Having no script to work from, they made a lot of guesses and got quite a bit wrong.  The mother is shouting "Baby", not "David".  For a complete list of Six-String Samurai subtitle errors, see http://members.aol.com/delmarch/s3titles.html

Do you NEED to have realistic blood and guts? does everything have to be seemlessly CGE'ed? If the answer is yes then dont watch Six-String Samurai. It's just the right amount of nonsense to make me love it, The scenes come together like a great comic book where you havent read all the sequels.  Its filled with amusing remnants of useless Americana. Beautiful scenes, great soundtrack, this is NOT your typical straight forward disney or hollywood tale, and thats why I continue to make my friends watch the DVD.

If you dont like this movie, you have no soul. :)

When this opened in Austin the local independant paper went nuts fawning all over itself over how great this clever piece of cinema was. I dutifully visited the local arthouse and payed my money to see this. What a rip off. I would have been happier seeing 2 hours of concert footage from the Red Elvises, then this hackneyed and self-important junk. It is nice to see it given the B-movie treatment it deserves, but I think you were too kind to it.

While it's not the best movie I've ever seen (it's not even the best campy or weird movie I've ever seen) it is very good and very clever. Wit and writing in general are the most important thing that goes into a movie, and this film has wit for sure. See it if it's your thing, if you know you won't enjoy it then just don't see it.

To sum up, SSS is like Monty Python, you either get it and love it or don't get it.

Six-String Samurai will at last get its due @ the 4th Annual Not Fade Away Buddy Holly Symposium in Lubbock,Texas over Labor Day Weekend when it looks to figure prominently in the Songwriters Panel on 9/4/04, (moderated by Terry Stewart, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)where Zhenya Rock, former lead guitarist for the Red Elvises (and current ZEEROK frontman) will mention it in connection with the life of Buddy . .(Buddy Holly, that is, not Buddy Rock) . . and its subsequent cult following garnered over the years in the B-flick anals(sic)of Chop-Socky lore, and visceral post-apocolyptic sagas (What?? . .)Anyway, the cradle of Rock and Roll and its denizens will pass the ultimate judgement on this poor man's "Mad Max"and how their native son fairs in this thinly veiled reference to same. Hasta.

Spooler: Over at Aint it Cool News, in a post listed back in 1998, Mugia the director of SSS said that the SSS movie was actually episode 3 of a trilogy, and he wanted to make 2 more films showing the back story of Buddy and Elvis' rise to power.

No details on the Story That Never Was, but Mungia said it was going to have a LOT of bowlers, and soda jerk hitmen.

Keep 'em crossed...sorry your teacher didn't like the film.  I brought it in and MADE my students watch it & do an assignment on it...as an English teacher, I geek out on Literary references ("Look, kids!  Classic hero Quest imagery!") :teddyr:

I purchased this on DVD around 2001 or so and that was my source for the review.  It seems to be readily available.  If you check the top right of any review page, I post a link to the film on Amazon.  Otherwise, you can always go to your favorite online DVD merchant and enter the title.

This is one of my all time favorite films! The fact that it got so little recognition is nothing short of a crime! Buddy is cool! The Red Elvises are my favorite band! Brian Tyler is also a fantastic musician. Jeffrey Falcon(the dude who plays Buddy) also does a good rock-a-billy tune called "Six String Samurai", its quite good. I read somewhere that Death and his minions are suppost to be Led Zepplin, and that they were a medaphore for the end of the Rock 'N' Roll era, but im not sure. Also, anyone who associates this film with Anime is a dickhead. Overall great film! Everyone should see it!
I can't believe you gave this turd four slimes... it doesn't even deserve a skull (that bad it is) I mean, I like bad movies and all, but this one was definately not funny... at all.
