Title: Comics as Movies
Post by: Stefan Robak on March 24, 2001, 08:47:50 AM
What comics do you think would make great movies?
One I'd like to see would be a film based on Garth Ennis's (master of sick humor) version of the Punisher.  In it Punisher's so merciless, even his writer thinks he should go to jail and be put down like a dog.  Here are some things that happened in his first 12-issue storyline:  Punisher tosses a crook from the empire state building,  Punisher hits previously docile and friendly polar bears and has them kill a crook and take the arms and legs of a mob baroness (crook's last words: "It's bears"), Punisher gains 3 fans (the Elite, who wants his upperclass neighborhood clean, the Holy, a Priest who kills people in the confessional, and Mr. Payback, a guy who spouts social recotric [I can't spell] while killing rich criminals), kills 3 of his murderous fans (cause the Elite's a nazi, the Holy is insane and Mr Payback is sloppy and let innocent people die), Punisher kicks said armless and legless mob baroness into a burning house (she gives a damn good fight though) and Punisher kills his toughest foe with a pizza and a morbidly obese friend.  I won't even tell you about hat happens to Punisher's poor friend Spacker Dave (lets just say he's sorry he got his face pierced.)
Any other ideas?

I think a lot of comic characters would make great movies as long as the powers that be don't screw it up by tinkering with the source material.Judge Dredd could have been a fantastic film if it had stuck to its roots(Dredd kissing?what the f'?)
Daredevil,The Authority,Tom Strong are all wonderful characters and could make a transformation to the big screen with no problem. These things stay forever in production hell a lot of the time,I think Spiderman was knocking around for a decade in various forms before it got the greenlight.Even iconic guys like Superman have been waiting around for ages for a fresh shot at  the title.Still, with the likes of Blade and X-men making big bucks,I'm sure a whole lot more characters will soon be lighting up the silver screen.

Ouch. The Punisher is such a strange headcase. Knocks off Payback because he lets Innocents get killed...still has a sense of his first cause,at least, hence the name Punisher. would make an over the top Violence Noir. Judge Dredd should Never have taken his Helmet off...the producer said"People pay to see Stallone, they expect to see his face"...Uh huh...like we don't know every crease in Rockey's face, yeah...Keeping the helmet on would have been the unique thing!  The audience would have paid more attention in anticipation of when he would...(he's gonna do it now!Oh, never mind)...Oh well...Comics are hard to film because the subject matter is over the top already.,yet thats what makes them seem such naturals for the movie biz. Hummmmm...how about Will Eisner's The Spirit as a cartoon...or Enemy Ace....No! Arnoled  can Not be Sgt. Rock ! The Iron Major,yeah...how about the Metal Men? Let me think about this...Hummmm,

Watchmen would be great. But considering the bad blood between Alan Moore (Writer of watchmen for all our non-comic book fan posters) and DC comics (publisher of said title) that won't happing anytime soon.

Kingdom Come would be another good one.  For some weird reason, I wanna see a Lobo movie. What can I say? I got a weird thing for that character.
Here's more I wanna see:
-A new Superman movie
-A GOOD Batman flick
-Avengers
-Excaliber
-Harley Quinn

Comics had their shot. I'm sick of comics movies. I've said before on another thread that it's so much easier to make a bad comic book movie than a good one. Not to mention how few new properties have emerged in comics within the last few years. The genre has been exhausted.

I mean, when you hear that they're making a Spawn movie that essentially has no Spawn, it should tell you something.

That said, I'd like to see more video games adapted into movies. Final Fantasy is a start.

If they turned 'The Longest Journey' game into a movie, it would rock the world.

Why not Battletech? Its a natural...intregues among the Inner Sphear, intersting contrasts between the Clans and the "Freebirths", and of corse...MECHA!...Rifleman vs Timberwolf, Battlemaster vs Puma, you know the drill. I'd recomend that the audience would need as simple a plot as possable, look at the Dune Problim...walk into a complex storyline, and its easy to get lost. Just keep the stoty at squad level, a Lance of Mechs who themselve don't understand the politics of the war...that might work.  What say you,Abby? Feeling a little combative? A trip to the Arena on Solaris could be intresting.....

I've been eagerly awaiting the maturity of CGI so (and it's ready now) so that we can get a kickass Battletech movie.  You're entirely correct about keeping the scope small though, all the good war movies (that pop to mind) deal with a compact group and their struggle for mission accomplishment/survival.

Hopefully they'll do it right...

There are tons of good comics out there can be turned into really good movies.

Authority
Transmetropolitan(SP?)
Powers
Planetary
Barry Ween
Scud
Savage Dragon <- - - I would love to see it done.
Sandman
Grendel

Some of them are already in development. Authority, Planetary and Transmet are being fast-tracked into Live Action/cartoon series.

And Abby, whatever happened with FF?

I agree that Sandman would make a cool movie.  It has an added bonus in being an odd concept and it wouldn't be an action film (like most comic book movies).  Some other things that would be cool would be a good Batman movie (let's hope "Year One" is decent), the Maxx, and aforementioned Lobo and Savage Dragon.  There are some others that are less well known that would make good films just because there would be less pressure to change story lines for public consumption.  (I'd also like another Crow but that's just me).

By the way, The Punisher has already been done though not based on the story line you gave Stefan.  It stars (get this) Dolph Lundgren and Louis Gosset Jr.!  Yes, it belongs on this site:  it's bad and entertaining.  I'm not sure who picked Lundgren for the part... but interesting pick for the Punisher.

As for games.  You know what I'm watching right now?  Street Fighter the Movie!
A great example of a game made into a terrible movie...  Raul Julia as M. Bison?!  I'm shocked.    All I'm saying is that they could have made it a better movie if they kept with the game's story line or at least don't make Ken and Ryu bad con artist!

Grrr...

You would think comics to movies would be a natural, judging by the extensive of use of storyboards.  Of course when you someone brings up comic books, they usually mean superhero comic books.  So I agree with Abby that comic book movies have had their day, as long as we're talking about superhero comic book movies.

Of course comic books encompass many more genres than simple superheros, even if that's what most of them are.  The misconception that they don't p**ses me off no end, but that's another rant altogether.

But unless you're partial to superheros, most of the movies based on comics that have come out aren't very good.  The ones that are, such as MEN IN BLACK or BLADE, just take the comics as a basis for their stories and don't stay inside the superhero universe.  BLADE never even entered the Marvel universe, even though that's where he's from.  And whoever heard of the MEN IN BLACK comic before the movie came out?

All that being said, I do hear Garth Ennis has written a PREACHER screenplay that's supposed to be pretty good.  If you haven't read the series, imagine a much more profanity-riddled and violence-driven version of the PROPHECY series.  Oh yeah, imagine it not sucking too.

I also don't think I'd want to see a WATCHMEN movie, as so much of what made the book is emedded in the comic form.  It would be quite a feat to make a decent version of the film.  Hell, even Terry Gilliam called it impossible, and he filmed FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS.

By the way, Scott Davis, FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN is slated to come out later this year.  It's a full length feature film, entirely created with CGI.  That is, the most detailed CGI anyone has seen thus far.  You can view the trailers at www.finalfantasy.com.  Of course, there is already an anime out based on one of the games.

Did nobody here see Neil Gaiman's NEVERWHERE?  This, done originally for BBC 4, is the epitome of comics adaptations that get it right.  Music by Brian Eno.
A 6-hr. production, played out over numerous episodes, this achieves the comic-book spirit unequivocably.
I would like to see any Gilbert Shelton or Peter Bagge comics adapted for the silver screen with live actors.
Gilbert did/does Wonder Wart Hog and the Freak Brothers comic books, as well as some new thing about a band that's too mainstream for my taste.
Bagge, of course, did/does HATE, which is perhaps the best literature ever to appear in comic form.
It can be done.  One simply needs proper input.

I remember seeing a cover of a Punisher magazine and I think it would make an good film.

JUDGE DREDD wasn't to bad a film. I don't know the comic, but I think JUDGE DREDD could have made more films. Stallone probably wasn't necessary to make this film. I guess since DEMOLITION MAN was ok they wanted Stallone for this one. I hardly remember the JUDGE DREDD film, but remember the image of him on motorcycle and most movie about the future interest me.

NEVERWHERE was a book wasn't it?  I don't recall seeing it in comic form.

Anyway, it hasn't been released in the U.S., and I'm too lazy to import it.

Title: Favorite Comic Book Flicks
Post by: Stupid Jacob on March 25, 2001, 05:44:40 PM
While we're on the subject, what are your favorite comic book flicks? Mine are:
-Superman 1+2
-X-Men
-Blade
-Mystery Men
-The original Batman movie (with Adam West and Burt Ward.)
-Mars Attacks (does this count? there has been comics.)

Another okay one is Men in Black. But the worst comic movie ever, has to be Batman and Robin. It was just plain evil.

Some of my favorite movies have been based on or inspired by comics.
-Nausicaa
-Porco Rosso
-Castle of Cagliostro
-The Fuma Conspiracy
-Lone Wolf and Cub(aka Shogun Assassin)

Also I like alot of direct to video animation that has been inspired by comics as well as a lot of tv shows, but since neither are movies I won't list them here.

I don't know, man, did you ever see THE PUNISHER?

I thought MYSTERY MEN was hilarious, as it was one big inside joke to superhero fans.  I also thought BLADE was good, and a step in the right direction.  I don't really need to hear any more moaning from INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE style bloodsuckers.

And if we're talking about Japanese anime/manga movies, then I've enjoyed quite a few.  AKIRA, GHOST IN THE SHELL. . .

Title: Watchmen: Unfilmable!
Post by: Stefan Robak on March 26, 2001, 08:57:06 AM
THE WATCHMEN IS THE SINGLE GREATEST COMIC EVER WRITTEN.  It's intelligent, surges with reaw emotion and chills you to the bone.  However, it would be very hard to do as a movie.  Alan Moore himself is against the idea (although Terry Gilliam said he was willing.  BTW Terry has referre to Watchmen as the "War and Peace" of comics.  I think you should check it out.  You'll never believe the ending!)  so it seems a no go.  Although I would like to see either Christopher Walken or Steve Buscemi as Rorsarch.  Walken cause he's creepy as hell and Buscemi because Rorsarch doesn't look as threatening "Withou t his face" but he's just as scary.
Also the guy who did Blade is working on a movie based on Ghost Rider (a flaming skeleton on a motor cycle).  I wonder how good that will be.

Yeah I know. But a fanboy can dream, can't he?
Oh and the ending is amazing. It doesn't matter how many times I read it it still blows my mind.
