Title: The Killer Shrews
Post by: Andrew on November 25, 2006, 04:10:12 PM
The "shrews" are dogs wearing old rugs and scary masks, and they are eating everything in sight!  Meanwhile, Rosco P. Coltrane meets the scientists who created the giant shrews, and everybody has a drink...and another drink...and another drink...and another...

darn it!! I had always hoped that this movie was shot in someone's backyard using the neighborhood dogs and casual people who justed dropped in...oh well in spite of the "professionalism" involved, this is one hoot of a movie!!! It really has to been seen to be believed!!

I have only seen this movie on MST3K, and damn! It is just such a classic! The cheez just drips off of the TV when you're watching it. I *know* that if I ever come across some killer shrews in the wild, they will sound just like they do in this movie!

My 50 y/o brother and I (age 47) saw "Killer Shrews" when we were kids in the '60s and happened to remember it today. I looked it up on the internet and saw this review. We were absolutely freaked out back then. I'd really like to see this movie as an adult. Any idea where I could get a copy?

I'm an MST 3K fan but have never seen Killer Shrews on that show.

This is a great, little bad movie.  Monster dogs, er, shrews!  I especially love the comment Sheriff, uh , Captain Col..Thorne makes about trying not to think too much, pretty much explains how he went from this to The Dukes of Hazzard.  James Best was also in Rolling Thunder, a vigilante movie where he feeds William Devane's hand to a garbage disposal.  Goody goody.

I saw this the first time (yes, I've seen in several times) in the late 60s on "SciFi Flicks" on Saturday afternoon, when I was about 9 years old.  I THOUGHT they looked like dogs!  So I was RIGHT!  I knew it.

Basic premise of this thing is sound, and speaking of sounds,
one of the best things about the movie is the sound of the
shrews.  Some shrews can't swim, but others can.  Like
Sorex Bendirii, the pacific ocean shrew.  It runs on top
of the water and then dives down for its prey.

Just like the ones in the new movie they're making.

I finally had the courage to type the words, "Killer Shrews" into my computer.  I first saw the movie when I was about seven and had nightmares for months.  Given the descriptions of dogs wearing rugs, this all seems a bit silly now, but believe me, for some reason I was terrified.  I need to see the movie now as an adult so I can lay all my fears to rest.  It sounds like I won't have any trouble doing so.

Me too!  I don't care how much the shrews looked like dogs with fake fangs, this movie terrified when I was little and is one of the few that I had recurring nightmares about.

One of my top ten most favorite 1950's B-Grade "Mad Scientist Makes Ludicrously Nasty Mutant Critters Which ,Naturally, Freak out, Escape from their Enclosures, and Chow Down on the Local Human Population" type flicks. (Got it on DVD!) Just the sort of thing that would run regularly on Saturday Mad Theater! Yep! Pretty pathetic and hokey looking monsters, but, hey! It was the 1950's and everyone was broker than the Ten Commandments in the City of Sodom! "Dogs Wearing Carpet Remnants"? I wouldn't rate the FX as being even that good! But, The again, if Were ever stranded on a remote tropical Island with a population of five and one Generator for power, Limited supplies, and three guns, and two of the guys are trying to kill each other, then I was suddenly confronted by a pack of ludicrously viciously mutated "Rats" that looked like Greyhounds or Dalmatians wearing Carpet remnants, I think I would be pretty darn terrified!...I always wondered what a Killer Shrew would be like as a guard dog..I mean, even though ordinary bullets work on them,(Quite unlike the even hokeier looking 1950's Werewolves) they got a really nasty defense of their own...I mean; they're almost cute until you find out about the poisonous saliva thing. If this flick were redone in glorious 21st century CGI you'd have five dopey people, one Well intentioned mad/ semi-mad scientist, some electrified fences, A couple of macho guys with guns, a somewhat more modern blond beauty screaming all the time, and some really dopey cliche's about the evils of Genetic Engineering ,and, of course, let's not forget about The Quintessential pack of Ultra-Vicious living killing machines running amok all over the place....Hey?! Wait a minute!..They did make the new Version in glorious CGI and with much better looking mutated animals  as the main antagonists & equally corny sub plots!...I think It's called "Jurassic Park"!*Hehehehehehe* But, I still say that Killer Shrews make better pets than do Mutant Velociraptors.......=^-^=

The idea of this shrew film is a good one, being trapped on an island is something that humans respond to.How many times have you worried about being trapped on an island? I bet it has crossed your mind.

"Killer Shrews" is one of the all time best bad movies - in the "so bad, it's good" category. I remember seeing it as a kid on one of those local Saturday night "Monster/Chiller/Horror Theatre" shows. It fills one with nostalgia. I'd take it any day over Freddy,Jason or Michael Myers. For those of you looking for a copy, I got mine at one of the area sci-fi conventions for $9.99. Look up Starlog magazine for dates to your next local convention or go to your local comic book/sci-fi store to find out dates.

This is great!! all the other people saw this as a kid on some bad local TV channel, I thought I was the only one! It would have been 1970ish for me and I never forgot the movie.  It seemed pretty cool at the time, and now I can appreciate the truly awful diaogue and acting.

Even as a nine year old I remember thinking along the lines of  "dude why don't you get a bigger tree to climb?"

You neglected to mention that Farell was played by Ken Curtis- AKA "Festus" of TV's 'Gunsmoke'! Besides the carpet-wearing dogs, all I remember of the movie is a clean-shaven but none-too-sober Festus locking horns with Roscoe P. Coltrane. hehehe!

Have watched this countless times since the early 60's.  My fav flick from 1959.  Now I proudly own it on both VHS and DVD, so if one machine breaks I won't be left shrewless.

I'm glad I'm not the only kid who got the crap scared out of him watching this movie in the 1960's. This movie was truly terrifying because there was no way to stop them from chewing their way thru the walls and getting to you.

I got a copy of the movie from Walmart for $1.00, and watched it again. And it still is as scary as the first time I saw it (almost)!!!

I love the pacing of this movie. A bit of dialog, maybe a shrew attack, hardcore drinking, and repeat. This is pretty much how I would handle myself on an island full of killer shrews and a fully-stocked bar. Every other scene is at the adobe shrew-lab bar, and unlike movies now, I'm pretty sure the drinking wasn't fake.

I just recieved the MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) DVD sets vol. 7-8, and this film was non-surprisingly featured as part of vol. 7. I thought it was pretty funny- sure, at times it's pretty bland with the actors just sitting, conversating and drinking martinis, but it certainly has its moments. Kudos to the mindless filmmakers that created this cult sleeper!

They tried here, they really tried.
Tried to give every actor their chance to steal the show.
Tried to encourage reflection on overpopulation.
Tried to break away from those 'cheesy' puppet monsters.

It really seasaws from start to finish between laugh out loud funny and lower your head sad.

It's interesting to see James Best as a lead...as I always think of him as the the giggling idiot Roscoe P. Coltrane. I'm another child of the '60's who saw this many times on Chiller Theater and similar programs that featured B-horror movies ... and it scared the s**t out of me, too! Only now, as an adult, do I realize that these were doggies with bad rugs (so to speak) ... I had nightmares over this many times and actually never realized until years later what a 'shrew' really was. This movie worked on so many levels, that I can forgive the cheesy effects. Watch out ... the killer shrews are coming!   :buggedout:

I saw this flick when I was a kid and it too gave me nightmares for not months but years. It was filmed just around the corner from where I live now in Texas and to this day when I see a high fence....I think of the Killer Shrews. When I see a dog with carpet on his back....I think of Killer Shrews.
you can get a copy at Sinester Cinema and I have two copies. Seeing this as an adult does calm some fears from Childhood BUT.....when those damn Shrews burst in the house OR try and bite under those barrels I still cringe in fear.
There are also model kits of the escape scene around.
I would LOVE someone with vision to re make this movie with good effects and even more important...good acting. THAT was the worse thing about this movie by far. But folks...next to Psycho this one scared the crap outa lots of young kids and adults in its time.

Updated the review, and bumped my rating for this to a full five slimes.  I have constantly come back to "The Killer Shrews" over the years, and every time I found it to be a blast.  The dogs in costume, the drinking, and the dialog are all just amazing b-movie cheese.

I used the newer DVD release by Legend for the updated review; anyone who loves "The Killer Shrews" (and "The Giant Gila Monster") should check it out.

What can you say about a film that stars Roscoe p. Coltrane, Festus Hagen and one of the founding fathers of Top 40 radio, Gordon McClendon. McClendon and his father owned not only radio stations but several drive-ins in Texas. This and Giant Gila Monster were made to be shown at those drive-ins. McClendon also created the 24 hour news radio format, which influenced CNN and other cable news outlets.

we bought our copy of 'killer shrews' at the dollar tree, or walmart. it's one of the cheap-o $1 movies. after the kids watched the mst3k version, they wanted to own it. they love adding their own comments like the bots, and sing the 'killer shrew' song that mike wrote and sang.
my observation: never judge a house (or shack) from the outside. it only LOOKS like a one room shanty, but in fact it is a many roomed shanty. classic b movie material. the webmaster is right about the drinking. i no longer drink, but if you played a game where you pour a drink everytime THEY do on screen?! HOLY COW! (but it would make the movie all the more enjoyable i suppose...)

I am so happy to read how others had nightmares from watching "The Killer Shrews" as a child...now I don't feel quite as embarrassed!
I saw this when I was 8 or so on the Saturday late night horror movies....in my area, it was "Chiller Theater." I actually had nightmares for a few nights afterward....the only movie to ever affect me like that. Looking back, I can only ask.....how? And of course, blame it on my impressionable 8yo brain! Since it was the early 70's, I'm wondering if the dogs in carpet remnants and the popularity of shag rugs combined to give this flick a tactile horror or maybe it was a latent fear of the shag carpeting that made the 'shrews' scarier. A shag rug with teeth...(shudder!)
Love this site.....now I've come across some movies I haven't thought about or seen since I was a kid.

I can see how this could scare a kid.  It's about as well paced as Them, or the Blob, and the scary scenes are about as good too.  If they spent a bit more time on the script they could have removed the silly bits, and wound up with a 50's classic! Oh, yeah, they would have needed better FX too.

Of course, if they did that, the movie might loose some of it's charm.

I dig "Shrews," had heard of it for many years but had never gotten a chance to see it till it turned up in a "50 Horror Classics" box from Mill Creek that I received as a gift several years ago.

Funny thing, the male lead in "Shrews" looked so familiar to me the first time I watched it but I couldn't place him ... when the movie was over I looked it up on IMDb and was surprised to find out it was a young James Best, who would go on to portray Roscoe P. Coltrane on "Dukes of Hazzard."

I am SO glad to have found this site!  So many of the people who've already left their thoughts on this site match mine:  it took me a long time, too, to get the nerve to type in the words, "Killler Shrews" into Google!  The last time I saw this movie I was about 9.  Somehow, I need to watch it now as an adult to realize it is really just a movie!

I saw this movie for the first time back in the early 60's at the age of  6.  My god, I was terrified!!  Probably, because the shrews could eat right through the walls is what REALLY added to the feeling of vulnerability.  Yes, I was terrified!  But, my sister, who was 6 years older than I, had nightmares off and on the rest of her life because of this movie!  As I matured, I stopped taunting and teasing her about it, as I realized that it truly was scarey for her!

Maybe I'll be lucky and find this at Wal-Mart for $1.00 tomorrow.  Maybe I'll have to go online and pay more.  Either way, I have mustered the courage to acquire this movie to re-watch it.

Just before I began to add this post, I watched the trailer for the original B movie.  As corny as the 'shrews' look, and as poor as the acting is, it still made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.  But, I AM going to watch this movie - at least once more.  I do think, however, I'll invite a group of friends over, first!

This is a great black and white film! I think I watched it for the first time when I was about ten too, but I was in a cabin by a lake in France and it was on the horror channel. I'm not messing around either, that's where I was. It was a fishing trip. I was there with my Dad and his friend and the owner of the lake had satellite or something in the cabin.

For a kid this film is scary. It's one of those black and white films that hits the nail on the head. The music is shrill and petrifying, it has great evil atmosphere, the masks the dogs wear are actually mind-ingrainingly scary and they are always hungry and will get at you, no matter what. To top it all off if you survive an attack but the creatures have so much as scratched you, you're dead! As the lethal infection from their teeth spreads throughout you. I spent the rest of this fishing holiday pretty afraid.

I now own it in a box-set with 'The Giant Gila Monster' and 'Attack of the Giant Leeches'. It's a great little horror film and worth many, MANY watches. Show it to the kids if you want them to behave!
