Title: The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Post by: shemp77@excite.com on July 13, 1999, 10:35:05 PM
Bad movie? This is the king (or should I say queen) of them all! Strangely enough, it's been bad for so long that now it's considered a masterpiece. I couldn't agree more. As far as horror goes, you'll find little here. Rocky? Well, it's got nothing to do with boxing or Sly Stallone. It IS one hell of a late-night, double-feature picture show, however. It's got singing transvestites (the songs are awesome), people in their underwear, laser guns, crazy hairdos, and...Meat Loaf. Don't worry, they kill and eat him after one song!

Feh! This movie is overrated, even as a bad film!

This sort of movie obviously does NOT appeal to everyone.  But Dammit (Janet), just go see it live and have fun!!  That's what it's all about!!

One of the very few movies I walked out of before the end.  Twice.  It just wasn't my cup of tea. One of the times, everyone was trying so hard to be a funny man, yelling out different punchlines over each other, you couldn't tell what anyone was saying either on screen or in the theater. It sure ain't no Plan 9 or Beyond the Valley of the Dolls!  God bless Roger Ebert.

I love rocky horror! the songs are addicting-i couldn't get Touch-a touch-a touch-a touch me out of my head, and the cast is hilarious as well. I just saw this a couple weeks ago, and have already joined the fan club. Seeing it live is awesome as well.

Alright, I have to respond to this "overrated" claim. Admittedly, I am totally biased and this has been my favorite movie for years now as well as being a huge Susan Sarandon fan to boot. However, the lovely Susan (a brilliant and popular actress to this day) is not ashamed of this film choice in her career. Although she said it was a horror (pardon the pun) shoot where almost the entire cast caught pneumonia, she's proud of it because she thinks that this will be the film of hers that will last the longest. Like it or not, this movie has gained international notoriety and embraced by millions over the past twenty five odd (VERY odd...) years.

Well I liked the songs. (Time Warp & Saturday night are my favorites.)

But the rest is rather questionable especially the script.

Sad as it may seem, this movie has become an essence of my life!  I rented it on a whim (I love musicals) and fell head-over-heels in love with it.

As a virgin still waiting to see it live, I can't get enough of RHPS!  I am even a member of the RHPS Official Fan Club, and it is the proudest card in my wallet (I used it for ID once).  Love and treasure this movie forever... I know I will!

Wow. This is the strangest movie I have ever seen....I LOVE IT! Even if I'm twelve, I have seen this about 20 times and every time I watch it I find something new. The songs are ingenius, the cast is amazing, and the storyline is bizarre. Not that he'd ever read this, but just in case: Richard O'Brien, you are my hero. Lol. Thanks so much for making the freakiest movie in the world a masterpiece. Columbia rocks!!

Best Musical in all of history. Fandemonium i say! I see it every chance i can in theatres and ATLEAST ONCE WEEKLY. Total count 167 and still viewing, the music is ALL good and with all the rice throwing etc in the audience it never gets boring. VIVA RHPS!

It's hard to talk about this as a movie because it's really more of a phenomenon.  Not to everyone's taste, certainly, but it srikes me as harmless, giddy fun for those who do enjoy it, and it does have some good songs and Tim Curry, always an asset.  It's not a GREAT movie, but as a phenomenon of audience-participation, it's unmatched.

All the calls listed by Fenris are correct. There are some other calls but it will ruin the movie if everyone is doing something. So by all means go get your "cherry popped" at rocky horror and then TRY to complain about the movie. Is it a bad movie? yes. Is it a fun movie? Damn right. Just get into it. you'll see....

This isn't a movie...it's an enigma. It came out when I was in the middle of high school...it bombed. It rose from the dead a few years later and my generation has never been the same. SEE IT IN A THEATER! If possible a theater where real veterans of the experiance are present. My daughter is now a fan and insists that the true meaning of life is in this one magnificient piece of art. I can believe her about 75 percent of the way. The "experience" is mind expanding...the philisophical implications are limitless. And the music! I have the complete score, in sheet form, by way of my daughter's fan club membership. It rocks! Best of all, it was mostly written for guitar by a guitarist...no freaky chords, very easy to master by anyone who plays and understands basic rock-guitar forms and techniques. The story! What story? A story...? This is love of an art form, people! Expressed on film with a dash of pananch and an all out attack on the senses and the conformities of mainstream consciences. Huge over-the-top production numbers somehow contained within a single test tube, easily hidden in one's hand or jacket pocket. Tim Curry in fishnets and high heels is an icon for every off the wall dreamer and wannabe who's ever had the misfortune of running afoul of his automated superiors. The original British version with the "Super Heros" scene intact is a must for the total effect. The thing still dazzles me after 25 years...once in awhile I'll even go to the real theater with my daughter to sit and yell at the screen and participate with this brand new generation of twisted time warpers...Frankies place is a gas! Janet's an Eisenhower era young republican slut, and poor old Brad...an a***ole's an a***ole, is an a***ole. My favorite highlight is Meatloaf exploding out of the freezer to wail Hot Patootie and play the sax. I love that guy! I have the German helmet to prove it.

First of all, I would like to tell y'all that I'm Dutch. Which means, I live in the Netherlands. Which means... no audience par-ti-ci-pation. Now, I can assure you, sitting on the couch with a friend and yelling "a***ole" at your TV set is just about as much fun as fighting Imps in Final Fantasy VIII. Not to mention the fact that the neighbours might start to wonder... RHPS rocks, and I truly hope that one day, I'll be able to experience real audience par-ti-ci-pation. Until then... let's just do the Time Warp again.

This has to be one of the most bizarre films ever made, but, having said that, Tim Curry got cheated, when he didn't receive an Oscar nomination for playing Dr. Frankenfurter in the film. He's that good in it. Enjoy!

I REMEMMM-BERRRR doing the TIIIME-WOORRRP ...  I spent far too many Saturday nights at the Eighth Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village with the great Sal as MC.  I have the video, but rarely see it, preferring to "be it in the theater."  The video is an excellent training tool for virgins so they know when to yell, though.  It's not a movie to just sit and watch--in fact, if you've been it in the theater it's next to impossible not to yell back at the TV screen.  It's also next to impossible to see any of the actors from this movie in other roles and not yell things at them, particularly Susan Sarandon.  Even at "Dead Man Walking" someone yelled "Slut!" when she came on screen for the first time (no, it wasn't me, though I was mightily tempted).  The soundtrack is one of my Desert Island Disks as well.  I'd also agree with Swamprat that the best place to experience RH is in the theater with people who've seen it three hundred times!  And remember, it's no crime to give yourself over to pleasure.

All together:  "IT IS IN NEW JERSEY!"

Ok, there's not a chnace in hell anyone will believe me. But hey I'm gonna tell you anyhoo! Have any of you Rocky-ettes seen a film called 'Jubilee' ? It's a Derek Jarman film and stars our favourite writer Mr. Richard O'Brien himself. My mother was his co-star of the movie and hence now he is my Godfather. I have his original copy of the fabuloso Rocky Horror and it has a video sleeve that I have not seen since - it's a artists drawing of Frank, Riff Raff and Magenta and it's done in colour. Has anyone seen this cover before?

One more thing..  the whole object of the show is a spoof on old time horror movies..... listen to the lyrics of the opening song... most all the old horror shows were ridiculous but that is what makes them so classic...this show fits right in with the oldies making it an all time classic...how many double features are there in theaters anymore??? the good old days .. the good old movie theaters and the movies!! Laugh and the world laughs with you....this world could do with a bit more laughter

IF you had gone to the show the year after it was released and PARTICIPATED with the audience you would not say it was a "bad" show!!.. The keyword is "show"..not real life or academy award winner. Participation and having a great time is the real aspect of this show!!... I remember carrying in all the props and using them (much to my astonishment) in the theater... every one helped clean up afterwards.. I have never had so much fun!!! But that was then and this is now... much of the fun things one could do years ago are now forbidden (sometimes I wonder what exactly is communism) and you get arrested for doing some of the stupid things!! I am now 53 yrs old and have a 21 yr old son.. I tell him about all the things I used to do and it is sad that most of them are illegal now!! What has happened to the fun and freedom in this world... Maybe everyone should be made to watch and actually participate in this show.. Laughter makes life a whole lot better...

Watching this movie was like diving into a laundry basket full of dirty underwear.  It grossed me out. Really stunk.  I was in college when it first came out. As I was watching it I kept thinking to myself, "this isn't funny. what person would think this funny?". Yet lots of people loved it.  No accounting for taste.  I'm glad there was never a sequal.

It's either your kind of movie or it's not.
No halfway houses.
It's either simply the best horror spoof, rock and roll, audience participation party you've ever witnessed(guess what I think) or it's the cheapest, trashiest load of tripe ever committed to the silver screen.

surprise.  My best mate is a fan too ( Rocky is her favourite, but

Heres a film that's aimless, shallow, and boring. Sure there's a cult following, and yes some may find this show entertaining. But for me the only thing memorable in this film is Tim Curry and a few musical numbers. This is a cult film that doesn't live up to it's hype. Sorry.

1. "A minor RHPS trivia question: On what day (night) does the party take place? Answer: August 5, 1974. On the car radio, Brad and Janet are listening to Nixon's resignation speech."

True, but the Criminologist says that it takes place on a November evening. Consider it a blunder.

2. "well, it's not necessarily a bad movie...not bad in the sense that, say, 'mod squad' was. the reason the dialogue is kinda stupid is because that was the idea. richard o'brien (not quite a god, but pretty damn close) had already written a bunch of songs for fun, then created some b-movie dialogue and b-movie situations and dubbed it 'the rocky horror show'. tim curry kicks much ass in this film, he's so funny. it's got great songs, funny lines"

I agree completely. I don't consider this to be a "bad" movie because it doesn't really try to be "good." It's just a lot of fun, and Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter holds it together. Plus, I don't think it ever gets too campy or silly. The movie makes sense within itself.

THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!! This is my favourite movie. It may seem strange that it is since I was not even alive when it was released, by may i say, 25 years and still going strong, that must mean something! I know most of the dialogue and all of the songs, and if that is anything to go by, I am setting out trying to convert people to the greatness of RHPS! Unfortunately, I have not seen it live, but man, do I want to! This movie is such a cult classic that everyone MUST see it in their lifetime, even if (God forbid) they never even see it again! By the way, if you don't call it a cult movie, then what do you call a movie that is played back to back for more than 24 hours?

I really love the "London Musical Theatre" and maybe it´s because I´m a little bit....crazy :-)
I really love the cast - just look @ Ellie Chidzey (alias Magenta) with her incredible voice.
I´m proud to be a fan of the film & the musical

This movie is pure awesomeness.  I saw Rocky Horror last year when I was 12.  The first time, I was a bit creeped out, but when I saw it again I loved it.  RHPS live was the most fun I'd ever had.  Of course, I was still partially innocent, so the whole virgin thing creeped me out, even if it was just bending over.  As soon as I get my driver's license, I need to come to another show.  Shock Treatment is also awesome.  Yeah..

Anyone who hasn't seen Rocky Horror is missing out.  The songs are great, the acting is awesome, yet again I say 'awesome', and the plot.. Err, the plot.. umm... Anyways, yes, Rocky Horror's just a lot of fun, whether you're watching with your friends or watching it live.

So many people just don't get it. And keep trying to, seeing the DVD or watching it on those rare occasions it surfaces on TV.

If you're not AT the show, you're only getting about 20% of the experience. Do yourself a favor and go. It's the greatest show in existence, even if the movie itself has quite a few "meh" sections.

O.k. yeah it's not someones cup o tea or not their thing but to have so many stupid posts and to call it a bad movie! WELL WAKE UP IT WAS 1975! Of course the music may not be your style or the script isn't your favorite but the movie was hard to make. Do you think Tim Curry wanted to dress in drag? People will do what they think will make them money. Honestly this movie is one of the greatest. I wouldn't be here if my mom would've never met my dad while doing the floor show. So call it what you must. But it will always be the greatest movie in their own genre.

Since i refer to both Roxy Music and Penn and Teller in my online identity you have probably already guessed that I am one of those "wackos" who has seen Rocky Horror a zillion times and I will NEVER get tired of it!!!! It's not a movie it's an experience!!  I have even done some of the songs in my fave karaoke place!
     "HOW STRANGE WAS IT?"
IT WAS SO STRANGE THEY MADE A MOVIE ABOUT IT!!!

This is one of the greatest movies of all time!! It does not deserve to be on the list of bad movies. It is a well known and appreciated movie at the school from which I come. It is a masterminded genius of movies.

Rocky Horror is my favourite movie of all time. I'm only 13 and already have fallen in love with Frankie (No not Tim Curry, FRANKIE!!)
I really want to see it live. I think Columbia is awesome, and so is Janet. But I'm a regular Frankie fan and always will be. I think he is the only man sexy enough to wear fish-net stockings & lipstick and still look attractive.
I can't wait to see the show live, RHPS is just about fun. Even if you think its a bad movie with no meaning. See it live and then decide for yourself, don't judge it from others opinions. I know I havn't. I've only seen it 1000 times and I've got my whole life to live for.
I love the songs and my friends get so annoyed at me singing them at school.
Rose tints my world and keeps me safe from my trouble and pain!!!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show - WOW!! I'm 16 so it just proves that all generations are grabbed by this fantastic movie!! I've never seen a better film and I can't wait to go and see it live - Tim Curry, (Frank N Furter), the only guy ever that can get away with fishnet stockings, lippie and a corset and still look strangely appealing??? and Magenta and Columbia are amazing! Riff Raff gently hysterical I love the Floor Show and The Time Warp in the film they're amazing - currently teaching my Golden Retriever to dance to them! This film is gonna save me so many days of finished-school-boredom!

This is by far the greatest musical of all time, and that is not a sarcastic comment. The music in this movie kicks serious ass. Also, Tim Curry delivers a tremendous performance as Frank-N-Furter, and the rest of the cast overacts immensely, which is perfect for this movie. The weirdness levels are off the chart. This movie is the greatest escape from reality possible, that's why I love it.

Oh my God, I just looove this movie, and I must admit that after seeing it I am now obsessed with transvestites, especially *cough* Tim Curry. If only it was still 1975 and I was alive and over 18 in 1975 and Tim Curry wasn't gay and liked skinny white girls who want to be normal-sized black girls.

Bela, I mean RCMerchant how can you not like ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW?  Great film. Haven't seen it in about 15 years. Once saw it at an art theater where everyone dressed up like the characters and lit lighters and stuff. Only seen it twice and found it to be lots of weird fun. Look they are all sitting down to a nice traditional dinner.

I saw this movie many, many times when it was HUGE as a midnight movie (You know when it was a $1 to get in.) where everyone dressed up, threw toilet paper and the lot, I have it on DVD now haven't watched it in ages. they did show it on New Year Eve at midnight at the local home grown cinema that play nothing but indy films. Had to pass on that as I am getting to old to stay out pass midnight. LOL  It's not a great movie but I still like it.

I saw this movie probably around 1990.  I was around 6/7 years old.

Love it.

Haven't seen it live at a theater or anything though.

If you don't enjoy watching the film in the privacy of your own home, I can't imagine enjoying the live experience, especially since some theatres have hot casts and perfectly syncd alternate dialouge, while some have neither.

I absolutely adore this movie and play!! I saw the play (sort of) on November twentith '93 (my mother went into labor in the theatre! lol.). The only bad part was last week... I jumped to the right instead of the left (slightly dyslexic... sorry) and I kind of jumped off the stairs and nearly broke my neck....... Anyways... It's probably (almost) safe to say that RHPS has passed cult requirements and ended up a religion...(with out the worshippiness and stuff...) I LURVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

listen, I always thought it was a bizzare movie and I can't just sit and watch it. This thing is meant to be experienced physically, mentally, verbally, visually, orally, sexually (same thing), and above all you need to not take yourself seriously. It's meant to help you let youself go and not worry about dominant social ideology. It's even better when you're up there performing. Trust me. If you really don't dig it then go watch socially exceptable cinema...you know, that crap they've been churning out like...Agent Cody Banks...the sequel.

it's too bad that going to see this in the theater now is such an unpleasant experience, due to all the knowitall "fans" who yell new and mostly unfunny things throughout every second of the movie.  you can't even hear the lines to respond to anymore.

and all these rebels, who always yell "F--- the rules" when told what they are by the theater, obey every last rule to the "T" after that.  good little sheep.

it's a fun movie though.

the rocky horror picture show is my all time favourite movie, though i know it's not for everyone to like, i wouldn't say it's overrated. i think is brilliant, and it produced a huge sexual awakening.
and as said in another post, im sure that all the actors and actresses in this movie, including amazing susan sarandon, are never ever going to regret o even question their  choice to participate in this movie, since im sure, is going to be the most memorable they've ever done
from argentina!

My ex-wife MADE me watch this "film" a number of years back. She used to go to the midnight showings in Trenton, NJ. She didn't get dressed up or anything but she did go. All in all, HORRIBLE MOVIE. Tim Curry was better in "Clue" or even "Congo". And I'll always think of Susan Sarandon in "Bull Durham".

I think I'd rather watch "Liquid Sky" than "Rocky Horror". (shivers up and down my spine)

What else would you want to burn/ban comrade?  :hot:

I put off watching this movie for years and just saw it the first time a few days ago.
This songs in the movie are very good and still hold well after all these years.
The directing in most of the film is brilliant.
The storyline is pretty weak but the music and visual antics make up for it.
Definitely my #1 cult movie now!

Barry Bostwick is still around.  Not a 'huge' star, so to speak.  But, he starred on that tv show Spin City alongside Michael J. Fox.  He's also a semi regular on Law and Order, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

Got a laugh one day when my father, who is rather old-fashioned, was switching channels one day and came across the movie during the "Time Warp" scene. He kept it on trying to figure out what he was watching until Dr. Frankenfurter came out and started doing his "sweet transvestite" routine, at which point he changed the channel in disgust. Not his cup of tea, evidently.

I saw RHPS so many times during my college years (both in theaters and on video) that I completely burnt myself out on it.

A couple of years ago I stumbled across it on the old Fox Movie Channel after not seeing it in nearly 2 decades, and I was amazed that I could still remember most of the audience response bits. That's a terrible waste of brain space, isn't it?   :teddyr:
