Title: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Post by: PLD on May 18, 2000, 08:14:20 PM
Is King Seesar a larger version of the puppet used as the cat demon in Uninvited?

Once again, it seems I must come to the defense of my favorite rubber monster.  Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is one of my favorite G-flicks.  The old Mechagodzilla rules, it's the grooviest G-villain since Gigan.  And the new Mechagodzilla is a damn wuss in comparison.  Long live old-school Godzilla!.

It may be blasphemy, but I like the "King Seesar" song more than the "Mothra" song. (Both are included on "The Best of Godzilla: 1954-1975" CD from http://www.gnpcrescendo.com) It's doubly funny if you understand a little Japanese; the priestess sounds like she's coming ON to the giant mutt. Ugh.

In my humble opinion, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is the best Godzilla movie so far. Sure, King Seesar looks like he came straight from Toho's monster rejects (I'm sure the artists had a better look for this guy)and Mechagodzilla's death was a bit ridiculous (I guess Godzy missed the Do not Twist Head warning sign)but it has its moments (watching Godzilla and Seesar use each other as a shield from Mecha's weapons is hilarious, as is Seesar's so-called defense mechanism)Personally, this movie should have gotten at lwast one more slime than it did, but i won't tell you how to do your job.

Oh puleeeeeeze, Godzilla fans! "This is the best of the Godzilla movies, except for... and the.. and that.... oh, yeah and the..." Your best is littered with a hundred compromises? The best isn't listed: Godzilla 2000.

This outing features a nice, strong story with an actual sense of mystery to it.  Outside of the goofball moment when King Cesar's ear stick up this one is as serious in tone as the early Godzilla films, a real step away from the kiddie pop flicks.  My favorite part in this move is when the skin from MechaGodzilla gets ripped of and the shimmering metal is first exposed.  Godzilla does a double take that is just classic, on little movement gets across that he isn't a brain dead mutant, that there are actually brain cells ticking away in that there cranium of his.

FYI Toho did NOT create King SHISA!

The "Pekinese" as he was called here is actually a LION god of protection of Okinawa.  Toho made a horrible suit based on the statues of the creature which can be found all over Okinawa (goto Okinawa.com if you don't believe me!) and renamed it Seesar for Copyright reasons. (read: They couldn't copyright the ancient legend of Shisa, though you can tell it is still SHI-SA in the the song).

Don't rag on King Shisa if all you know of him is what you saw in this infernal film!

This 1974 classic was truly one of the finest movies that I had ever seen.  To see King Seesar and Godzilla team up and defeat Mechagodzilla as convincingly as they did was sure worth it.

I bought this movie when I was 8 and haven't really watched it since the 5th grade. Think i might watch it again. Also, for you former Power Ranger freaks, remember the Dragon Zord from the first season? The missle fingertips were a dead-on rip off from this movie. See also King Kong vs. Godzilla for more Godzilla fun.

Haven't seen this one in a while, but I recall it being among my favorites. I felt sorry for poor Angilas/Anguirus though . . . he'll be eating soft food for months after what Mechagodzilla did to his jaw.

I MUST come to the rescue and aide of the Azumi Tribe.  I love the Princess's voice and King Caesar is quite a cool monster.  He's possibly the only dog I like.  I hate the real thing, but Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla is a pretty good movie to me.

The best of the 70's G-flicks, which isn't really saying much, all things considered.
I mostly like Masaru Sato's "Mechagodzilla" theme. Lively and jazzy, yet cold and mechanical, like the mecha-kaiju it represented, and better theme than the one that Akira Ifukube would compose for the robot (No, it is NOT a cyborg!) a year later (and this is coming from an Ifukube fan).
I think that King Caeser is one of Toho's most under-rated kaiju. I would like to see him updated as an oppoent for the new Godzilla, perhaps in a story revolving around the current relationship betwixt Okinawa, Japan and the United States.
Favorite line: "Damn Godzilla! You're mistaken if you think your powers are a match for Mechagodzilla!"
All that was missing was the sinister "Na Ha Ha!"

I have to admit, I love your reviews. This movie is one of my favourite Godzilla flicks, more camp than a row of tents, and still wonderfully corny. The only thing that annoys me is how everyone picks on King Seesar. What westerners don't understand is that KS is based on a Foo Lion - the stone statues that you see guarding Japanese temples. They are seen as divine servants; that is most likely why a Princess was needed to summon one, as the rulers of Japan are said to be divine aspects themselves. History lesson aside, I do think the eyes of KS looked so funny - they reminded me of tail-lights of old American cars, lol. But his roar is one of the best of the Godzilla monsters around. :)

Definitely one of the more entertaining B-movies, especially the final fight when Godzilla holds Mecha-G from behind and Seesar tumbles around trying to headbutt him. Genius!

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is a fantastic movie ever. Kids and adults should watch this as a family film. I watched it when I was 4 years old. I stopped watching it when I was almost 5 years old. Monsters are also in this movie. There is Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, King Seesar, and Anguirus. My favoritest one is Godzilla.

Woo!

I don't know if I'm a fan or critic of Godzilla Versus the Cosmic Monster, but you've really captured the best lines from the film in the .wav files.  I laughed pretty hard, seeing them in print.

Erm?

Oh, the best movie of this genre?  That's easy, class: Gojira 1984.  You can't beat Tetsuya Takeda's breif appearance, as the drunken bum.

I love the Showa Godzilla movies. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla was the best showa godzilla movie since Godzilla vs. Megalon and King Seesar was very much like a lion but this battle moves are sensational MechaGodzilla is weapons will blow you away. MechaGodzilla looked destructive and Godzilla kicked ass and Seesar was brilliant a must-see movie with good special effects.

This is probably the best Godzilla of the 70's ("Godzilla vs. Mothra" being the best of the 60's cycle).  MechaGodzilla is definitely a force to be reckoned with and King Seesar is a nice throwback to some of the original Godzilla monsters who relied on sheer brute force rather than laser beams and high-tech weaponry.  The prophecy angle gives Godzilla a reason for being called to action, unlike some entries where he just kind of shows up on cue.  The scene with the beautiful priestess singing for Seesar to rise is one of the best in the film.  The alien invasion conspiracy (pretty much an obligatory plotline in Big G movies) is better handled than in "Godzilla vs. Gigan".  The ape aliens are fun in a low-rent way-- could they be the inspiration for the flesh-eating lizards of the "V" miniseries from the 80's?

One of the best of the Godzilla movies. Why does Godzilla always call Agilas for help all he is good for is getting his butt kicked remember GODZILLA VS GIGAN.King Seesar looks like a hippee version of BARAGON.One scene that was real stupid was when Mechagodzilla was sent to destroy Seesar while he was sleeping.I Don't know why MG didn,t just fly over and blast him.Instead he walks hundreds of miles giving the lady time to awaken him that MG is really stupid.I GIVE THIS MOVIE 5 STARS.

The film itself has a great plot along with it's fantastic
movie score makes this film the 2nd best next to 1968's
 Destroy All Monsters.

I agree with IT'S  comment.why did'nt MG just use his jet speed and just fly  over and blow up Seesar while he was sleeping instead of walking all those miles allowing time for the girl to awaken him or better yet he could of just fired his missles or lazers from a couple of miles.Best of the 70's Godzilla movies.O yeah the MOTHRA song rules.Seesar's sucked.

I'm a big fan of Godzilla, so when I saw this movie at a resale store for like $2 on VHS I naturaly had to get it because I had never seen it for sale of DVD anywhere.  When I got home and watched it I was kind of disappointed because I was comparing this first MechaGodzilla to the newer ones and realized that the original had a sort of beer belly going on. I was like "WTF??"  I don't know, maybe MechaGodzilla had been nibbling on too many space cookies or something.

Am I the only one that actually likes Kiryu the best out of the MG's?  I almost feel kind of sad for that... Anyway, this film really changed how I viewed Godzilla when I was a kid.  It was one of the only movies where I saw him struggle so hard against a villain.  I was one elated 5-year-old by the end, though.

This was the first movie I saw in a theater when I was 6 years old. Yes im a old fart now but I do remember the Mechagodzilla theme song. The song that is played when MG's fake skin is removed. The drums kick in and that cool jazzy music plays. With the camera showing MG's bad ass weapons missles and s**t! Round 1 Godzilla Pwned!
